The Lore & Story of The Last Faith

released in November of 2023 the last faith is a soulslike Metroid Vania set in a Gothic world that evokes feelings akin to the classic games that inspired it while the game is stylish and fun to play its story leaves a lot to be desired as in keeping with its Souls like inspiration information about the world is given through item descriptions and character dialogue and due to how scattered this information is it can be difficult to see it all to piece everything together this is compounded by

the flowery and frankly confusing way the characters speak which makes it hard to understand what they're talking about as a result it's easy to be left confused about the world and its Story by The Game's end in an effort to remedy that let's go through the information of the game decipher it and put it all together so we can see the lore and story of the last Faith obviously there will be spoilers to the story of the last faith in this video if you don't want to be spoiled what are you doing h

ere seriously go play the game or watch a playthrough of it if you don't want to be spoiled you can come back here if you're still confused and hopefully this video will help you also while there will be information pulled from the various side quests to piece the main story together the events of those side quests won't be covered here this video will only be covering the events of the main story all right with all of that out of the way let's get started before we get into the events of the ga

me we have to get through a lot of backstory and it all starts with a Land named illearth in illearth there were three main cities that most of the populace lived in there was erim the sea city of silver Bridges which was decorated with unique purple flowers there was tanel Village which was permanently covered in ice thanks to its position in the mountains and there was myth ringal which was the largest and most populous city in the land the societies of these cities were divided into hierarchi

es with common folk at the bottom and noble families at the top and each of these cities had a noble family that was closely associated with it erim had the black Halls who commonly wore extravagant masks to flaunt their status and wealth tanel Village had the ordin whose sprawling estate overlooked a village and mith ringal had the oxville who lived in a large Manor outside the borders of the city there was also a fourth Noble family the walren who didn't seem as strongly associated with one ci

ty like the black Halls ens or oxville but were considered nobility by them as well as by the common folk now illearth was a very special place because through much of history if not all of it its people had had Encounters of the cosmic or Celestial sort these weren't just stories about hearing voices and seeing something weird in the dark though these were very real interactions with entities that lived beyond their realm of influence for proof the people pointed at the unique metal named demis

h Shade ore that was created when the moon commonly associated with the celestial and illearth Shone upon a specific spot on the ground there were also larae and creatures that defied explanation that were found in illearth and the people that consumed them gained immense power or otherworldly abilities beyond the scope of what was possible in the material world as a result the people of illearth had a sort of reverence to these beings in fact the city of mithal actually had a religion centered

on one of them named the junis ministry it revered a cosmic entity named junis who long ago fell to illearth and despite being scattered across it was said to still whisper in the ears of its people while the junis ministry was the largest religious order in the land it wasn't the only one as there were references to other gods in illearth and all across it were temples and churches that were devoted to worshiping these Gods due to the abilities or unique resources that could be gained from inte

racting with these celestials most people in illearth especially the noble families were obsessed with power this hunger was Amplified by a unique substance in the land that was named nikr nikr was a Wonder material that could be used to create never-before seen phenomena and objects or when pulled into the body could enhance the physical and mental properties of the one holding or using it this effect was additive meaning the more nikr someone had or used the more powerful its effects were it's

not exactly clear where nitrux came from there were some implications that it was created by the Nobles and heads of the religious orders in illearth but a material of such power seemed Beyond on the craft of normal humans to make so there seems to be a possibility that it was given to the People by one of the celestial gods they worshiped no matter the case once nyru was discovered it added fuel to the fire and kicked off a sort of arms race in illearth as a people used it to create never bees

een items and weapons for instance there was a powder made with nikr that Rose in temperature when it came in contact with blood which was commonly applied to weapons to cause additional fire damage to B in battle and black Hall of the black Hall family of AR Lim used nikr in conjunction with demish shade ore to make a pair of signature pistols which became a sign of the wealth and power of his family these experiments with nikr were not limited to the creation of items and weapons though as the

noble families of illearth began conducting dark rituals in order to unlock more of its potential the black Halls reportedly made sacrifices to some sort of deity in our limb perhaps in an effort to grow further in wealth which led to them becoming incredibly greedy the aristocracy around tanel Village and the ordin estate sacrificed children to create items known as The Unborn of the midnight aristocracy relics with a power so strong it could be felt emanating from the object and the oxil were

said to gain a divine power but what exactly that power was and how they gained it was guarded by them while the specifics of the oxel power was Kept Secret by the family it's likely that it was result of a ritual conducted by a religious order associated with them an order known as the daughters of the night tide which was a coven of witches that conducted rituals to tap into the nitrux in their bodies to unlock powers of the dark however using nitrux didn't come without a cost as someone gain

ed more and more of the material it would begin to feel a cold feeling take hold of their heart their thoughts would become increasingly centered on obtaining nitrux and growing in power with which eventually led to them becoming aggressive attacking others in order to obtain their nikro their bodies would begin to undergo changes as well becoming warped and beastial in appearance this transformation would continue until at the moment that their Greed for nyru fully took over their heart they mu

tated into a terrifying bat-like monstrosity that came to be known as a cold one once a person transformed into one of these beasts they would become bloodthirsty viciously attacking and eating anyone that fell victim to their claws making matters worse was the fact that they became incredibly resilient resisting damage from most ordinary weapons which necessitated the creation of new ones to put these monstrosities down as time went on the cold ones that people were turning into underwent mutat

ions that made them more beastial more numerous and worse of all more powerful as a result the locations and cities of illearth became incred incredibly dangerous in her limb slimy monsters and crazed Buccaneers wandered the shores and canals looking for victims and the cold ones that appeared in Toano Village learned to manipulate the frost of their home to perform devastating ice attacks that could freeze people solid the people of mith ringal were not spared from the contamination either with

monsters and lunatics filling the streets looking for someone to draw nitrux from despite these creatures being a direct result of nik's use the people of illearth didn't stop using it instead they doubled down and started to do experiments on the cold ones which led to the discovery of even more incredible weapons items and spells the daughters of the night tide tortured the cold ones to make an item called the powder of the Damned which increased the suffering of anyone that suffered damage f

rom a weapon cated with it up until Tel Village the aristocracy managed to capture cold ones and use them in complex rituals at a frozen lake to create items such as lunar powder which was able to freeze mortal tissue on contact or spells like the moonshade tears which were able to bring up defensive Columns of ice to repel attacks from enemies the junice ministry even joined in on the experimentation with some of its scientists of its Institute scientia experimenting with cold ones to create a

healing injection which could quickly heal the wounds and afflictions of patients injected with it albeit with a nasty side effect as it was believed the injections may have have contributed to the worsening nikro pandemic striking the land as the arms race gripping illearth continued to accelerate it eventually resulted in the corruption of the most sacred relics of the land the hearts of nikr kept at various sacred places of the realm these artifacts were incredibly powerful and as a result we

re hollowed by the common folk and noble families alike but even their Prestige did not keep them safe from the Hunger of the people of illearth and eventually a series promises were made with the hearts in exchange for great power due to the selfishness and greed that motivated these promises the hearts were branded with evil and became known as sepul at least four Sepulchre were made in illearth one rested on top of the Cathedral of the junice ministry ostensibly created by someone in the mini

stry another was in a great church in an area known as the lurgical pass likely made by the clergy of the church the third was in a large mansion in the city of her Lim and seemed to be associated with the black halls and the fourth was with the ordin in teleno village and was closely linked with that Noble family while these four nikr Hearts were the ones revered in illearth there was actually a fifth one in existence but it was not nearly as sacred as the others information on where this sepul

cre came from is nonexistent all that's known is that the person that made the promise gained so much power that they eventually rivaled the power of the Gods transforming into an infernal creature known as neroth the eldrich white interestingly the seul of neroth was not stored in an altar like the others but lied corrupted within its body perhaps hinting at how whoever narro was before they transformed kickstarted their Ascension however despite becoming a false god in some way the other noble

families sealed up naroth and a crypt in the deepest point of illearth likely as a way to prevent the monstrosity from taking over their Dominion but despite being sealed up there were stories in her limb which lied above the Crypt of neroth that inhuman Whispers rippled in the city's foundations implying nyar Roth's influence could still be felt in the city and that naroth was the unearthly deity that the black Halls made sacrifices to in order to grow further in power in any case the creation

of the seul and the Spells and the weapons and the cold ones raging across the land led to an uneasy State of Affairs in elar and it was only a matter of time until the hunger that drove all of these creations pushed someone to try and gain everything for themselves sure enough a man named Patrick ladic eventually started down the path of that ambitious goal ltic was a man of the Judas Ministry that wanted to one day rule illearth however he wasn't going to be satisfied with just ruling the lan

d as a religious leader he wanted to become a god thus he started making a series of moves to gain control of the sepulcre of illearth while also eliminating those who could challenge him he started by climbing his way through the ranks of the junis ministry and after years of Deceit and subterfuge he finally achieved his goal and became the leader of the church thereby getting a hold of the sepul stored at the top of the cathedral with that in hand he then established an order in the ministry n

amed the Ethereal order and began preaching to everyone in the land that he was the one true power in illearth and that only by following him would they be led to Salvation those that did not Bend to his will were imprisoned and tortured for their sacrilege a punishment that could be inflicted on lak's own followers if they did not follow his orders although harsh latic was able to further consolidate his rule in illearth using these tactics he also continued the experiments with nikr to further

grow his power and influence experiments which were headed by a scientist named William esque one of his greatest achievements was creating beings called Nik turns soldiers that could resist the negative effects of nitrux and wield it to become even more powerful once he felt comfortable enough in his position he started making his moves against the noble families beginning with the walren although no one was sure how ltic Charmed the head of the family Leonardo walren so much that Leonardo eve

ntually handed over the walren family crest to him as a gesture of good faith soon after this Leonardo vanished as did his family's Crest and most walren opposition to ltic vanished along with them ltic then turned his eyes to the oxil and their coven of witches the daughters of the night tide he took a different approach to dealing with them using his power in the ministry to Outlaw the practices of the daughters declaring their rituals sacrilegious and blasphemous the ministry thus started to

confiscate weapons and artifacts associated with the daughters and arrested and even executed those that were found with items associated with the witches in their possession the daughters began to mount a resistance against the Ethereal order but at a crucial moment they were betrayed by one of their own their leader no less media axeville whose reasons for the treachery are unknown what is known is that after media's betrayal the daughters were sarily rounded up and executed and their bodies w

ere dumped in a mass grave in a boggy swamp outside the borders of myth ringal only one sister of the night tight survived the slaughter lady dorotha who who recognizing she couldn't take on the might of the junice ministry herself retreated to the oxville manor which now stood empty and abandoned tainted by the stain of its previous residence where she waited to offer help to those willing to take on the ministry around the same time the Ethereal order took control of the sepulcre of the lurgic

al pass and one of lax's soldiers a woman known only as the burnt apostate was made to guard it interestingly the burnt apostate with her thorny crown and simmering Rose strongly resembled a figure in a statue in the oxville manor raising the possibility that it wasn't only media that betrayed the daughters of the night tide after the execution of the daughters and the elimination of the oxil ltic began to plan on how to deal with the black holes of her limb they posed A new challenge for him as

they had the backing of an entire city additionally the black Halls perhaps in response to ladx moves thus far had been housing scientists from all across eligar that had fled from the ministry's devastation scientists that were more than happy to share their expertise with the black Halls leading to the Discovery and rediscovery of weapons new and old among the scientists that fled to Orlin was William es the man who had been leading the Ethereal orders experiments on cold ones who had defecte

d from laic and was Now set on seeing him eliminated a betrayal that enraged ltic esque was given the large Manor that held the Sepulchre of her limb as his residence perhaps charged with keeping watch over it bolstered by the scientists the black Halls made ready for the coming conflict against the Ethereal order but then all the members of the family were mysteriously murdered while their assassination may have been engineered by L there were implications that it actually came from someone wit

hin the family A Man Named Edwin according to a note written by Edwin he felt that his family had betrayed him by hiding a great power from him a power that P believed was his right to wield and lied in a crypt deep below or Lim this suggested he was talking about neroth whom the black Halls had helped seal up in the Crypt below their city and may have continued performing sacrifices to in order to grow in power in any case Edwin exacted revenge on those that wronged him by killing them many of

tomb were his kin and may have been the black Halls given their demise before he could obtain the power he sought though his lust for power eventually led to him succumbing to the nikro sickness and he became a horrifying skeletal monstrosity he still haunted the tunnels before NEX rooth's locked door still searching for the power that he believed was rightfully his in any case whether they were killed by ltic or Edwin after the fall of the black Halls erim fell soon after in esc's mansion the s

epul of her Lim was put under the watch of two of lak's minions yor a hulking brute that could harness electricity and Lena a woman that used to oppose the Ethereal order but had since joined their ranks with the eradication of the black halls and the fall of her liim there was only one Noble family left in ilar that could oppose ltic the ordin near tanell Village however lck's conquest of the other am hadn't gone unnoticed and having seen what happened to the rest of the Nobles Manfred ordin th

e head of the ordin family knew there was only one thing he could do to protect his family fully give himself over to his subul an idea that may have been inspired by the story of naroth thus ordin took the Relic into his body corrupting the heart of niku but filling him with a huge amount of power like nikaro it prompted a transformation in Manfred who became a terrifying monstrous Beast as a result of the ritual by taking his nro's heart into his body Manfred also made it so that anyone wishin

g to get their hands on it would have to kill him and rip it from his corpse in order to do so his plan worked as ltic having seen his transformation and new power a power that given Nero's strength may eventually rival the gods if it didn't already decided against attacking Manfred choosing instead to bide his time and build his strength before tackling him with the elimination of the other families his preaching and his imprisonment of the opposition ltic had a firm hold over illearth however

While most people left in the land bent the knee to his ethereal order there were still some people that opposed it one such group was a faction of Fighters known as the starborn born out of tanel after manfred's transformation the starborn rose up to oppose the Ethereal order and the name of their own personal godis novais to be specific which was discovered by a man named Nikolai barov barov who apparently had the backing of some of the remnants of the Warren was also an incredible inventor an

d he supplied the starborn with all kinds of unique weapons to help them in their fight against the Ethereal order as well as the cold ones that were now more common to see than normal people across the land so the starborn set out across illearth attacking the ministry and those associated with it in an effort to thwart ladx plans they were particularly focused on wiping out the Nik turns knowing they were the key to lad's consolidation of niku if they could be eliminated ladx Ascension would l

ikely fail however despite being equipped with powerful weapons and spells and having clear targets the fight wasn't going particularly well as the star arborn often fell in the fighting against the cold ones or the ministry reducing their numbers it seemed like it was only a matter of time before they followed in the footsteps of all the others that tried to oppose ltic the starborn were not the only faction opposing the Ethereal order there was another group that opposed him too a group that w

as led by someone that matched lax's Godly Ambitions media the former leader of the oxil in some way either before or after the downfall of her family she had achieved what ltic desired she ascended to godhood becoming an entity known as The Cosmic voice and coming to reside in a realm separate from the material plane this Ascension may have been the divine power that the oxil were rumored to have gained in hidden but it was most definitely the power that convinced William esque to defect from t

he Ethereal order in any case like ladic media wanted to be revered as a God as the last faith in illearth which put her at odds with the leader of the junis ministry thus she worked to prevent lax's Ascension she didn't do this out in the open though instead working from the Shadows using her agents to covertly undermine her rival and his plans this Shadow SL proxy war between herself and ltic raged for an unknown time until media finally realized what she needed to do to defeat her foe use one

of his Nik turns against him since the Nik turns were capable of gathering large amounts of nyrs while resisting its negative transformative effects for longer than others in theory one of them would be able to stockpile power until they could rival and overthrow ladic one of the night turns chosen for this task was a man named Eric who had been imprisoned by ladx ethereal order in a temple to the deposed Gods although Eric had been chosen as a pawn in a Celestial battle between two Godlike for

ces he had no clue what role he was to play all he knew was that a coldness a vice was taking hold upon his heart after being freed from his imprisonment under mysterious circumstances Eric left the temple and came upon the abandoned oxville Manor here he met lady helenia a descendant of the oxil and current Lady of the manor and Mark a man that had survived the contamination of mith ringal by taking refuge in the manor both explained to Eric that what he was feeling was the effects of nyu's sic

kness which meant he was doomed to eventually become a cold one however Mark gave him Hope by telling him that a scientist in myth ringal named Dr Herman was looking for a cure for the sickness so Eric set out to the city hoping he could find the man that could heal the ailment afflicting him after making his way through the city fighting the cold ones that filled its streets and catching the attention of one of the starborn Eric made it to the Federation offices and found Dr Herman in his offic

e however he was dismayed to find that the doctor had been driven insane by the conditions of the city and watched as he injected himself with the drug that transformed him into a cold war having no other choice Eric killed Herman his supposed Only Hope for salvation as he wallowed in his disappointment He Came Upon a woman named Annabella she said she had come to help her in his work but found he was not the man people thought he was as he was not looking for a cure but a way to gain more power

himself evidenced by his eventual transformation apparently according to a note written by Herman he felt Annabella had been working to undermine his plans or sabotage his work he wasn't sure why she was doing this but had grown to distrust her as a result in their conversation Annabella told Eric about ltin about how he'd taken over and corrupted illearth which led Eric to believe that he should seek out ladic to save his soul Annabella then told him of the places ladic had corrupted where the

sepulcre were telling him to collect those before seeking out the head of the judis ministry Eric followed annabella's suggestion heading to her limb where he fought off the starborn in the city as well as jagor and Lena and Es Mansion then navigated the graves and churches of the lurgical path until he defeated the burnt apost in the great church and finally made it through the ice of tanell Village to fight off Lisa the starborn soldier that had noticed him in mith ringal Ander Lim as well as

kill the Monstrous Manfred ens in the ordin estate in each area he collected the sepulcre associated with it thereby breaking the promises that have been forged with him as well as growing exponentially in power from his trials and ordeals once he got the other three seul he went up to mith ral's high walls and in one of its churches he met a woman named Katarina who urged him to continue on his path interestingly Eric could find a note in Katarina's Chapel that mentioned that the nun was looki

ng for her sisters but who they were and for what reason was unknown as candle wax had fallen on the page and obscured the writing in any case motivated by The Woman Eric continued on fighting through more beasts and the vile people inside the junice ministry until he came came face to face with ladic ladic initially seemed to underestimate Aon as it wasn't until after he was brought to his knees that he unleashed the full extent of his power on his foe however despite the immense strength of hi

s transformation ladic could not defeat what Eric was now and he was killed by his own niker in the aftermath of the fighting and of claiming the last sepulcre Eric could feel that his journey wasn't over yet he felt beckoned back to the oxville manor and when he returned he found that all its previous residents had disappeared he noticed the statue of three figures that stood in the middle of the foyer was now twinkling with some sort of power and after he interacted with it he found he was tra

nsported to an area named The Wonder of illearth here he came upon Annabella and Katarina in Regal attire standing by by a throne atire that matched two of the figures of The Statue he had just interacted with revealing the two of them as agents of media this reveal also explained why Annabella had been sabotaging Herman's work who those sisters that Katarina was looking for were and why both of them were so keen on pushing Eric to continue with his journey they were furthering media's plans to

eliminate ladic and become the last faith in ilar a plan that was nearly completed all that was needed now was a religious figurehead that the people of ilgar could follow a position that Annabella and Katarina now offered to Eric if Eric accepted that position he would take his seat upon the throne and spend the rest of his days serving media the cosmic voice in the role manufactured for him however Eric could instead reject the offer of Annabella and Katarina which would send the two into a fi

t of rage they would then reveal their true forms and attack Eric intending to make him pay for rebuking their God however despite having the advantage of numbers they would be defeated by Eric after they fell media from across the plains would reveal herself expressing disappointment at Eric's choice and his Slaughter of her disciples it was only a minor inconvenience though as Eric had already paved the way to her ultimate goal and replacing Annabella and Katarina and even Eric was something s

he could easily do then she killed Eric bringing an end to his journey however these were not the only ways Eric's story could end there was a third path he could take but to walk this path he had to find two relics that would enable him to pierce the veil of the world to see media and her deception these relics were the eyes of esque items that had been created when William es gained the gift of true sight a gift that had been lost at some point in the past when the eyes were stolen from esque

before he could gain the eyes though Eric first had to find Lady anakah and myth ringal and help her organize a ball there was a woman named the veiled Maiden that offered a space in her Lim for lady anakah and once lady anakah had her party Eric could then buy a mask from the veiled Maiden which gave him the ability to speak with the dead using this mask he could talk to special ghosts in igar that would lead him to the eyes one was in es mansion in her limb upon following the path of the ghost

Eric would be led to the Tower of a Hydra likee monster named the harbinger of nightmares once he slayed this Beast he would be granted an audience with esque who is nothing more than a shriveled corpse and gain one of his eyes the other eye was in a cave guarded by a beast named The Starlight Beast of ilon a monstrosity likely created by the dark experiments and rituals conducted by those in tanel Village once it was defeated Eric could meet the ghost be led to the chest and claim the other ey

e with both eyes in his possession this time after Eric refused the throne and defeated Annabella and Katarina he would be able to see and interact with media in her Cosmic form she attacked Eric for his betrayal But Eric thanks to all the nyrs he'd absorbed through his journey and the sepulcre in his possession held enough power to overcome the cosmic voice and put an end to her scheming forever as Eric transformed into his beastial form looked over illearth he looked over a land that was freed

from the power struggle of the false gods latic and media and with their fall so too fell the boundary between the physical and Celestial leading to the start of a new age in illearth one free from the teachings and lies of those that would call themselves Divine and with the start of that new age upon the land the story of the last faith comes to an end it's a story that has a number of good themes like the corrupting nature of power the dangers of cult like fanaticism and how hubris can lead

to one's own downfall it's just a shame it's not told in the best way as the flowery vague and even contradictory dialogue of the characters and lore items makes it so hard to understand what's going on in the story The gameplay of the game is really solid though so hopefully Kumi Soul's games can take away some lessons with the storytelling so that any follow-ups they make whether that be a sequel or a whole new game can be even better than their first outing now I did my best to explain the lo
