The Physics of Animation - Mari Jaye Blanchard - Faces of RIT

To create movement, Mary Jaye Blanchard’s classes are full of motion, with students jumping, crawling, and walking to better understand the physics they are trying to draw.

Hi, my name is Mari Jaye and I teach drawing for Animation at RIT. I truly believe that animators need to have an experiential connection to the basic elements of movement in order to create or invent movement themselves. For this reason, in my class we are always jumping, balancing, or walking around with different intent actively engaging with the physics we are trying to draw. I'm always looking for new ways to investigate what a line really is, and I think VR is a great tool for that
. The line becomes a shifting concept, that concept is what I want my students to investigate.
