There once was a boy with exceptional hair. He had three or four best friends in the whole world. They had a lot of fun together—a lot of fun. There were long rides on tour buses, meals eaten together, little jokes, maybe more. But mostly there were songs, songs they sang together under the bright lights. And then, all too soon, there were only songs that they sang apart. One had a baby. One had a single for the Fifty Shades franchise and a baby. One put his Irish brogue to good use with a little guitar and the open road. Another got really into R&B and was never heard from again. And the boy with exceptional hair had to move on too. He had to find his own way. He had to find his own voice. But going at it alone, suddenly without one’s closest mates, can prove difficult. He searched far and wide for his own voice, finding a little harmony here, a little guitar solo there, and he put out his own spate of songs. They were great, very fun. Very rock and roll. It kind of worked for him. It felt like a promising first attempt, a big swing at a stadium kind of sound, but a first attempt. Then, one day, he was minding his business, when he stumbled upon magic mushrooms just...there in Malibu, in the Shangri-La studio. Or, I don’t know how he found them, but he did. That’s just a small mystery embedded in this tale. The point is, suddenly, he could sing. There it was, his voice. Also some blood. A lot of blood. “This is where I was standing when we were doing mushrooms, and I bit off the tip of my tongue,” he told Zane Lowe for his show New Music Daily, out at noon on Apple Music. “So I was trying to sing with all this blood gushing out of my mouth. So many fond memories, this place.” You may have guessed by now that the boy is Harry Styles, if not because of the great descriptor (exceptional hair!) but because his name is in the headline of this article—or rather children’s fable. It’s an Aesop original, I think. Styles said that through it all, despite being in a band from 16 to his early 20s, or maybe because he was in the band, he didn’t take any drugs at the time. “When I was in the band, to me it felt like it was so much bigger than any of us; I felt, I’m not going to be the one who fucked it up,” our hero said. “So I was like, I’m not going to do any of that stuff.” He may have diverged from his closest friends, his mates, but he ran right into mushrooms, and so gained his voice. Have you heard “Lights Up”? It’s a wonderful song. Sounds like the sound he should really be singing up there on his own, all lights on, just him. Did you see him on Saturday Night Live? Inspired stuff. “It was like, I want to take some mushrooms, now is the time to have fun,” he said. “We’re in Malibu, [I’m] 24, I’m also in music.” Yes, h
