On September 13, 2018, Florida-based Corey Chubon finally met up with his guide for the day, #markuptain Uptain was going to help Chubon with his ambition to go elk hunting. Florida is a paradise for several species, but there are no wild, free-ranging elk there. Naturally, anyone who may be even just wondering about hunting these animals has to take an extensive trip into consideration. That’s exactly what Corey Chubon had done before settling on Bridger-Teton National Forest in Wyoming, US, as the perfect destination for some bow hunting. #grizzlybear #truestory

with proper protection in this video we'll tell the story of Mark obtain a 37 year old elk hunting

located in Western Wyoming the Bridger Teton National Forest consis
ts of some 3.4 million
Acres of forest it's one of the biggest national forests in the U.S and stretches all the way from
Yellowstone National Park and down Southward near the Idaho border the landscape is adorned by Pine
Aspen fir trees Willows and grasses and plenty of animals have their natural habitat in the area as
well if you choose to venture into this particular Wilderness don't be surprised if you encounter
everything from Elk moose coyotes cougars bison wolves and grizzly bears wh
ile bothersome and
even scary to some people the presence of these animals is a plus for others it makes the place
a true paradise and perhaps that's why it's so popular with tourists and Wyoming residents
alike the national forest Zone website boasts that the Bridger Teton National Forest is known
for so-called 4ws Wildlife winter opportunities Wilderness and wild and Scenic Rivers perhaps
that's exactly what stood out about the place to Florida resident Corey chubon back in September

8. the man planned to go bow hunting for Elk but he knew he needed a reliable guide to help
him in the wilderness that's how he found Mark uptake a 37 year old experienced guide who lived
in Jackson Wyoming tubon hired uptane for his trip and on Thursday September 13 2018 the two men
set out in the Bridger Teton National Forest the two of them were on horses they spent their
time on the lookout for Elk then they finally managed to find a bull elk and it was Corey
chubon's time to shine but
a shot was rather poor it wounded the animal but it wasn't enough to
kill it before the two men knew it the animal took off wounded and afraid they had no idea where it
went but they started looking for it nonetheless when they saw Nightfall was upon them and they
had yet to find the wounded animal chewbon and uptane decided to leave and regroup the following
day the two men met up again on Friday September 14 2018 and immediately started searching for
the animal chewbon shot a day earlier
a large blood trail definitely helped the two men in their
search at about 1 pm that day chewbon and uptane found the bull elk it was dead and it seemed like
no Predator had found it the carcass was intact the two men tied up their horses nearby and got
down to business they meant to field dress the elk to process it for transport on the back of their
horses hours flew by the warm temperature inspired Mark obtain to remove his shirt and chest holster
this decision potentially changed the co
urse of events that quickly ensued The holster held
the guide's 10 millimeter Glock in discarding it obtain essentially parted with a crucial safety
measure and as it turned out he done so at a time when he needed all the safety measures he could
get the men resumed their work but then they both heard something it sounded like rocks banging but
chewbon enough chain at no time to react suddenly as if they materialized from thin air two grizzly
bears came charging toward the men from downhill
the Grizzlies were large one of them was an adult
female the other was her yearling Offspring both Corey chubon and his guide Mark uptane started
yelling in Terror that's when the larger of the two Grizzlies the adult female leapt attacking up
tank chuban couldn't let his fear win nor could he allow the bear to mull obtain in front of his
very eyes he knew he had to retrieve obtain's discarded Glock he found the semi-automatic
handgun some five to ten yards away but chubon couldn't shoot t
he Raging bear a combination of
factors made it impossible first the grizzly was erratically attacking uptake meaning that chubon
couldn't exactly get a clear shot and then when he finally got the chance to shoot the Beast chubon
realized he simply couldn't operate the Glock it wasn't working as the man tried to manipulate
the slide he looked around he saw the yearling staying back seemingly uninterested in attacking
shubon desperately can continue to try to make the gun work but it was no
use on top of everything
else he was also unfamiliar with how the Glock was supposed to work and before he knew it the
Sal left obtain and turned its attention to him the Beast charged and then it grabbed chewbon's
right boot in its mouth the bear only partially managed to throw the man off his feet while
trying to escape the bear chewbon threw the handgun to obtain who was yelling at the bear but
the gun didn't quite reach the man it landed short possibly further aggravated and confused by
the
two men's movements the sound once again turned its attention to obtain Corey chubon saw it as his
only chance to try and get away and call for help as he fled the last image he had of Mark obtain
his guide was of the man standing on his feet facing the bear it would be the last time anyone
saw the man alive Corey chubon ran for his life struggling on the rugged terrain under his feet he
only stopped some 400 yards away when he reached the horses chubon had to untie both of the animals
in order to get his horse to leave then he rode as fast as he could to the top of a ridge it was
his best shot at getting some highly needed phone signal at around 4 30 PM piton County Sheriff's
Office dispatch received chewbon's frantic 9-1-1 call it took Rescuers two hours by helicopter to
reach tubon time is crucial in these Unfortunate Events they all probably knew that each minute
that passed made obtained survival more and more unlikely Rescuers search for obtain only for
a short wh
ile it was getting dark which made their efforts futile they left mark uptane
behind deciding to return the following day Mark obtain's lifeless body was found on
September 15 2018. some 50 yards uphill from the place of the attack his body carried the
signs of an aggressive bear attack there were bite wounds on both of his hands wrists and arms
on both upper thighs and on his right shoulder an empty can of bear spray that's safety removed
was found five yards away from Mark obtain's body t
he different bite marks indicated that both
Bears the sow and its cub alike attacked uptane the empty bear spray canister and other evidence
suggested that at one point during the attack obtain was successful in deploying the spray
this most likely caused the Bears to let go of obtain the man then dragged himself uphill and
away from the animals but his injuries were too extensive the man fell dropping the bear spray
and rolling to the base of a tree where he died an analysis of the attack
LED authorities to
the decision to find and terminate the Bears there were strong reasons behind this decision
firstly they hadn't discovered the carcass of the elk before the attack which meant they weren't
guarding their food the likely scenario of a mother bear protecting its cub was also ruled
out the Bears were the ones to approach the men and not the other way around all the evidence
seemed to suggest that the two Grizzlies attacked unprovoked lured by their desire to feed on the
elk
arkas Wyoming Game and Fish Department staff set non-lethal traps at the attack site
The Yearling was caught alive and later euthanized while the sow was shot at the scene of
the attack after charging law enforcement officers Mark obtain was survived by his wife and their
five children aged between 10 and 17 years old

I lived a few miles from this area for almost 20 years. I had 2 grizzly encounters while hunting. One of them I called in with an elk bugle while bow hunting. It eventually moved away and watched me as I left. The other encounter was a 1 hour staredown as it started to get dark and I was miles from my car on the top of a mountain. I was crouched down aiming at its chest with a 7mm for literally 60 minutes as it just stared breathing heavily. I am positive this bear was going to attack, not sure why it didnt. That was the longest hike out in the dark I've ever experienced.
I live in Jackson and everyone here knows the truth. Yes, there were mistakes made by Mark. However, Chubon never threw Mark the gun, he threw it in the woods while running away. This summer I'm gonna go out there and find where he disposed of it. He didn't try to help Mark. A coward he is and flew back to Florida. In Wyoming, we don't run from situations like this, we run to them. Rest in peace Mark.
Sometimes you get the bear. Sometimes the bear gets you. Don't fault the bear for being a bear.
Situational awareness and rules to be followed would've kept him alive and both uninjured. A standing lookout while the other is busy dressing the Elk. Then swap when tired. Making sure a hunter under your guide knows how to efficiently handle weapons would be one of the main operations on the checklist. I get accidents happen but this could've been avoided. Sad
I have hunted in grizzly country for 40 years and have had them at spitting distance to me and my horse a number of times . For the first 20 years I never carried bear spray because there was no such thing. The last 20 years I have a cannister on my hip at all times and I take my gun out of the scabbard when ever I am farther than 5 feet from my horse. Have encountered over 40 grizzly bears hunting sheep, elk and mule deer. They are the top predator where I hunt. Give them full respect because the only person who knows what a grizzly bear is going to do is the bear. I also put a portable electric fence around my wall tent. Kim Beattie Alberta Canada
After an encounter I had with a boar grizzly years ago, while hunting in the mountains of western Wyoming where I grew up and continue to live, I no longer hunt those areas that have been overrun by grizzlies. Even though I am armed with no less than a rifle and handgun while on the mountain, I feel it is too much of a risk. I stopped fishing around those areas too. It's been said for years in Wyoming, that a gun shot from a hunter is like a dinner bell to a grizzly. They have figured out where there is a gunshot, there is a meal.
How could he live with himself , running off and leaving his companion alone to die.
A firearm is not a toy or a spray bottle you keep in your knapsack. Its a life and death tool. How anyone could face the wilderness and not be acquainted with your life saving tool is beyond me.
Remember the guy that thought that only he could live with grizzly bears ? Yep ,he said they respected him and the were friends then he ended up getting not only himself killed and eaten but also his female assistant .
I can't find harsh enough words to describe my feelings about someone going into the woods and not knowing how to use his weapon.
I was there Mule deer hunting an hour south when this happened. Chubon pushed the magazine release thinking it was the safety then tossed the man an empty gun to Mark then rode off jumped a plane and headed for Florida let’s say the locals aren’t to happy with Chubon!
The guide’s last moment in life was being abandoned by another human being “supposed hunter” to die alone fighting for his life.
Two things most hunters don't do enough of before a hunt like this.... Shooting range and getting yourself in shape... Nothing sucks more than a hunter that can't hit the side of a barn and can't walk 1000 yards before being winded... Hats off to these guides for what they do.
Wow, that's a very sad story. I pray that the family members are comforted.
great story. sad for the guy (and family) who died because of the other one. I have always disapproved of bow hunting of large animals that escape suffering, and die.
I spent all my teenage years in Alaska in the 80's. Whenever hunting my dad made me carry the 12 gauge with slugs. I ALSO knew how to shoot the 44 he always carried. Can't say I'm super impressed with the guide not making sure Chuban knew how to use the Glock.
Guide sounds like a warrior. Fought off two grizzlies, bare chested and alone. Even carried himself fifty yards up near vertical terrain before he gave up the ghost. Don't think anyone in these comments can say they'd accomplish a quarter of that to survive.
9:04 The wildlife equivalent of "he went for my gun." Sad story all the way around. But as with most tragedies, lessons to be learned, if they haven't already been.
I find it scary that all of the reports of his death changed to protect the image of bear spray being effective. I was hunting about 30 miles from the attack that day, and the early reports said that he died from a crushing bite to the skull, killing him instantly. Also, the LEO reports of when they approached the trap containing the cub, and the sow charged them were that the corpses of both bears were so drenched with spray that they were difficult to approach. This makes it clear that the spray was ineffective.
