i have a hard time finding that if my government is unwilling to stand up for an eight-year-old girl who was abducted brutally raped and bludgeoned to death with a hammer who are they willing to stand up for each year across canada dozens of innocent canadian children and youth are raped and murdered across the country and while the vast majority of the perpetrators of these heinous crimes are caught arrested and at least notionally brought to justice what happens when the cameras stop rolling w
hat's the truth about how this country actually treats child murderers it's happening more and more they're letting people out of jail pedophiles that should never be out murderers that should never be out they should be fighting for our children and not just letting them die my name is aaron gunn and this is politics explained we've obtained video surveillance footage of a young person matching the description of victoria and the clothing descriptors provided for her walking with an unidentifie
d person on fifa yesterday in the area of walter street my ex-wife was on the phone and there was something wrong with victoria and she said she informed me at about 25 after six that victoria hadn't made it home from school yet and she thought she was missing so right from then it was just try to get a grip on myself and uh found out that there was really nothing we could do other than sit and wait and i didn't want to do that and i basically left terrors that night about quarter after seven an
d i searched for my daughter through woodstock um starting that night i didn't rest my head again until saturday afternoon at three i just couldn't stop looking that's basically how my night started and my my search started and what was how long was the period from from that point to when you had any information at all like kind of the a few days later um they came out with a composite sketch and and then there was just not silence you knew there was stuff going on but it wasn't until may 19th t
hat i found out two people had been arrested and charged with murder 12 is about an hour's drive east of woodstock police were led here by one of the accused terri lynn mcclintick she's told investigators this is where they will find victoria stafford's body mcclintick never lived here but her co-accused michael rafferty did stay back i took a big gulp because what had just been said but at the same time i don't see any pictures or anything so maybe it's all a hoax maybe tory's still alive you k
now and um like i couldn't believe it until i had proof and i got the proof i i wish i could take it back and hand it back to them and not but it's i had to see it it was my daughter and i want to know for sure on july 19th just over a hundred days since victoria's disappearance her remains were found by police near mount forest ontario it was later revealed during autopsy that she was raped severely beaten and killed following repeated blows to the head with a hammer a year later terry lynn mcc
lintock pled guilty to first-degree murder and was sentenced to life in prison two years after that the trial for her co-accused michael rafferty would begin rodney the day has finally come michael rafferty's trial has been done how do you how do you feel uh where are your emotions today uh all over the place in the same room i would like to be in the same room as the man accused of taking your daughter away but self-explanatory really if you think about it like like i mean on one hand i imagine
some people just kind of want to close their eyes and pretend it's not happening it's not happening mm-hmm but you made a conscious effort to really be there i wanted to be there every day to fight for that justice like even though i wasn't the one up there bringing everything forward or everything i i had i had to have trust in the crown attorneys that they they were doing their jobs appropriately six gruelling days after the trial began a verdict was finally reached michael rafferty was found
guilty of kidnapping sexual assault and first degree murder but this nightmare was far from over stafford still lives here in woodstock where his daughter was lured from her school by terri lynn mcclintock nine years ago last friday he went to parliament hill to protest mcclintock's transfer to a medium minimum security healing lodge just nine years into her life sentence terri lynn mcclintick was moved into an unfenced minimum security healing lodge where she would be living in comfort alongsi
de children one of my child's killers is living in a minimum security healing lodge not too long ago she just pled guilty to first-degree murder there was nothing within she did not meet one area of criteria for a transfer to a healing lodge that's where my fight came in because i literally had it in black and white like this was all of her offenses and this is what she needs for the transfer this contradicted this totally 100 but they still allowed her to go stonewalled by the government rodney
stafford decided to take his fight directly to parliament hill with the support of thousands of canadians his determination shook the political foundations of ottawa and echoed through this country's corridors of power she's in a healing lodge with no walls no bars and with children living inside this is about the contrast between a party and a government that respects the rules that respects the independence of our judicial system that appreciates the professionalism of our correctional servic
es there's not one person in the house of commons that shouldn't be backing our fight to me all of this to do with my daughter none of it should be a political issue it's it's common sense and a party of ambulance chasing politicians who are quite frankly demonstrating a contempt for the principles of law and debate in this house it is inexcusable i wanted to jump for joy and spread the word um basically what we've been pushing for for the last two months became reality she's back to where she b
elongs convicted child killer terry lynn mcclintick is back in jail one thing that i can't understand and i feel like most people said it's kind of just common sense is there's this focus on on rehabilitation reintegration into society which you know if you steal something from the store you're getting a fight or something like that fine but do you really think that should be the focus for for child murderers no not at all not not in any way shape or form in my opinion take the life of a child y
ou spend the life your the rest your life behind bars but the tragedy of victoria stafford and the subsequent mishandling of her killer is regrettably the norm and not the exception in canada's justice system alicia was born naturally and very peacefully and did not fuss at all we had moved to my parents in niagara we were all home that morning and my sister went to school she made me eggs for breakfast i remember this day mom went to work i went to work as normal and then i went to work and i d
idn't want to wake the baby so that was something i didn't do and then yeah so it was a shocking phone call and then a rushed taxi ride home brenda arrived home to find her baby daughter dead in her husband's arms her husband wayne mcbride would later be tried and convicted for first degree murder for the killing of his own daughter and then there was some rumors that there was um sex involved and i didn't believe that either until my dad sat me down one day and and said you know i have to tell
you something and it's true what you know you've been hearing and so i guess through autopsy they confirmed that and that was a a big shocker um i had to move away change my identity and live a new life so that i could cope so that's what i had to do of course i was you know my family was at the court cases and friends that were and we knew that he had gotten a life sentence but in canada a life sentence doesn't actually mean the offender will spend the rest of their life in jail a life sentence
here means 25 years in prison after the 25 years are up the prisoner is then eligible to be released back into society on parole this is the maximum sentence permitted in canada he received a life sentence for this crime but life sentences don't really mean life in canada can you kind of explain how how that is and um yes so a number of years he was inside and given escorted temporary absences so i was going to a meetings and whatever and that was all right but then when it became unescorted ab
sences that's kind of when my radar went up in 2011 two years after mcbride was released on day parole he was caught reoffending with the legal drug use the hiring of prostitutes and quote being involved in an unhealthy relationship i believe he immediately hooked up with a woman with a child under 18 so that's a big red flag for a pedophile on life sentence the other thing too is when he was charged it was for murder not for sex crime but yeti was committing that while the murder happened so be
cause he wasn't charged with a sex crime he isn't on any sex registry sex offender registry and a lot of people didn't know until his release in 2019 although mcbride had already breached his parole back in 2011 he was released again in 2019. when he was released when i found out through the grapevine it was to where my mom lives he was then allowed travel in an unsupervised area which meant rural which meant nobody knew which little town or the route of travel or any kind of responsibility and
i think it was pretty irresponsible i mean he is you know serving a life sentence he's a child murderer rapist and yet they're letting him run free and god knows where this dangerous and negligent pattern of releasing child murderers back into society with little to no supervision is all too common in canada this is 14 year old brayton bullock on march 9th 2006 brayton was lured into the forest by an estranged member of his family there brayton was viciously stabbed 13 times and left to die but
you have that feeling as soon as you entered the hospital that something was like bad um then the two doctors come in and basically just looked at us and said your son has gone and it was like gone where your son is no longer with us your son has passed and it's the heartbreak that there's numb mountain in 2010 nicholas bullock was tried and convicted in the first degree murder of his cousin brayton but not long after the unthinkable happened the ontario court of appeal ruled that police had fai
led to properly interrogate the suspect and despite overwhelming dna and other evidence ordered a new trial we didn't expect what was going to happen next nicholas bullock walks out of court a free man but says nothing after pleading guilty to manslaughter and the stabbing death of his cousin braden nearly 13 years ago the judge sentencing him to 12 years but giving the 29 year old credit for time already served behind bars for him to even walk the streets that i'm on it just blows my mind away
let alone the same day the same time right behind us not even five minutes out the door all done all right the way the system's set up now is can you are you ever really to get able to get closure no the justice system injustice system is disgusting the parole board most of it disgusting the only closure i've got in any sense is i know where victoria is and i know where the two of them are that's it you know and no way am i comfortable with thinking that he's enjoying any aspect of his life he s
hould be you know incarcerated i every day is a new struggle because the closure for me like there is none so what's the truth about how this country actually treats child murderers well from healing lodges to plea deals to unescorted parole it's clear that the rights of victims and their families continue to be ignored and that parents who have already been forced to endure the most unimaginable loss continue to be left behind by their own government and the biggest thing of everything is no ma
tter what i can't change what happened to victoria i can't bring her back but i can fight in her name and make sure justice is upheld he was so protective of people that couldn't be protective for themselves she meant everything yeah i'll never stop fighting for my daughter and her rights until next time my name is aaron gunn and this has been politics explained [Music] [Music] you
