desperately need to be told now back to the video stokeley Carmichael's Story begins in Trinidad in 1941 moving to New York as a child he grew up in the Bronx immersed in a diverse Community his parents pursued the American dream a concept he later critiqued for its racial inequities attending the Bronx High School of Science exposed him to a predominantly affluent white student body sparking his interest in civil rights joining the the Congress of racial equality during High School Carmichael's
activism began to take shape excelling academically he chose Howard University graduating with honors and philosophy in 1964 setting the stage for his later activism Carmichael's involvement in the Civil Rights Movement intensified at Howard University he participated in the freedom rides in 1961 challenging racial segregation in the South his arrest in Mississippi for using a whiteson bus stop marked the beginning of his deep commitment to the movement throughout College he engaged in various
civil rights activities culminating in his role as a field organizer in Alabama for the student non-violent coordinating committee's Freedom Summer in 1964 his efforts significantly increased black voter registration leading to the formation of the Loon County Freedom organization as chairman of the SNCC in 1966 Carmichael's ideology shifted from nonviolent resistance to a more radical stance frustrated with the slow progress of civil rights reforms he championed the concept of black power dista
ncing the SNCC from its earlier integrationist position this shift marked a significant change in the Civil Rights Movement aligning with black separatism and drawing both support and criticism Carmichael's Journey took a further radical turn when he joined the Black Panther Party as its prime minister in 1967 his international travels and encounters with global leaders influenced his departure from the SNCC and his deeper commitment to black nationalism and pan-africanism as a prominent advocat
