Hello guys, you're tuning on Yes Whut I'm your YesStylist host, Zoe. I’m Regina Lee and I’m a Japanese translator. Hi, I’m Maureen. I’m a supervising editor. So, I invited you guys here because I wanted to ask if any of you two actually watch Korean dramas or Korean variety TV shows. I love Korean variety shows. *Cackling* I watch Running Man and Sixth Sense, I love them. -Omg. - It’s so funny. You’re a long term hardcore fan arent’ you? What about K-dramas? K-drama? Ah, yes, sometimes. Sometime
s? What about you Maureen? I write for the blog, there’s a column called Drama Queens Oh yeah. - So yeah. I’m actually entitled to…. - Entitled to write about them. Yes, to follow K-dramas. - It’s a job spec. So personally, I’m not a hardcore K-drama fan but I do watch one every now and then. - Some of the famous ones? Popular ones, or when one piques my interest. Or when people are talking about it and I can’t stop hearing about it. - Yeah, same. So today, I prepared some clips from really popu
lar K-dramas and K-variety TV shows. OK. That has been trending in the last couple of years. So I grouped them all, and then we’ll just watch and react. I don’t know how many of these have you guys watched but I haven’t watched some of them. So I'm sure it’ll be an honest reaction OK. OK, if that’s it then we can begin. - Yes. - Sure. Hmmm! I’ve watched this before. I love this. I love her. She’s so funny. Yeah and so pretty. The guys are so cute. *Cackling* Which one do you like? At first I lik
ed the guy on the left and then the right one came and then I’m like OMG. Oppa Oppa! Everyone’s an oppa. Her lines are all so memorable. This guy’s been a bit shady for the whole series. Poor him. They keep emphasizing on him. Oh yeah, he was chatting everyone up. Ah yeah this one. - She was like, I don’t trust you. You mean this guy? - Yeah this guy. ‘Cause he kept talking to other girls and went to Paradise with different girls. I don’t think he’s mysterious. - Yeah me too. I just think he’s i
ndecisive. *Cackling* I thought he was gonna choose one for the new girls. That’s what I thought too. Boys always go for the new girl, but he’s just stubborn. I knew he'd choose Ji-a. For drama? I kinda expected it. Poor girl. *Cackling” - We all know. We all know what happens. Poor thing, look at her. She actually looks happy. She’s like “Aww, oppa you picked me” It’s a bit surprising tbh. Ahh. Ugh, thank you. Whaaa?! She’s like “What?!” OK. -Thank you, bye-bye. Wow, and then now she’s depresse
d. She’s gonna get PTSD. - Everyone is shocked. Yeah. They’re like slow-mo and all. It’s so harsh. Why is everybody shocked? I think the guys kinda expected that. Yeah and the girls were like, maybe. -Yeah. They might’ve had a private chat. There’ already two guys there. Joining the crowd. Joining the crowd haha. *Cackling* What do people call this? An awkward family portrait. *Cackling* And now there’s another one! They keep taking shots of that girl who was rejected. Yeah. - It’s so sad. So a
wkward. The two other guys were like bruh. Yeah and they’re bros as well. Oh god. - Yeah, they’re friends. Okay, so what did we just watch? We watched Single’s Inferno. And in this scene, it’s judgment day on Inferno Island bros Hyun-joong and Hyun-seung…. I can’t read their names have both chosen Ji-a as the person they want to leave the island with. As all the other contestants ruminate on which girl the mysterious Si-hun will pick he explains that he’s torn between two women. Si-hun walks ove
r to Su-min, briefly says thanks then briskly makes his way to Ji-a, shocking everyone. Poor thing. So this is a very harsh judgment day. Um hm. And based on our reactions, I think we’ve all watched it. I watched. -Yeah. We all know… - Actually I just finished watching it last night. You just watched it?! *Laughs* And I just wrote an article about it. Very effective, I'll put the link down here for you. Please. It is a quiz actually. -It’s a quiz? You’re supposed to find out which contestant yo
u are. Ah… I feel like I'd be Yea-won. I wouldn’t be interested… like I’m interested in the guys but they won’t be interested in me, and then I’ll just be like making friends with everyone. -Ohhh. What about you guys? Actually I think it's quite hard to choose who you love in just a week. They only have one week! I’m like “hmmm?!” So I think I'll just make friends. It’s so hard. - Some of them joined in the last two days. Yeah, only two days for them to choose who you wanna be with. They don’t r
eally know anybody. They just have like one lunch together and some chat. Exactly! - It’s very harsh. But the show is really all for the drama. Have you guys watched Love Island or Too Hot to Handle? Yes! -You have? You love your variety TV! I love drama! - How about you Maureen? I think I’ve watched something similar it’s called Love In The Wild or something like that. Oh wow. That one’s on Netflix right? Not sure if it’s on Netflix. It’s Australian I think. The contestants have to pair up and
compete. Compete?! Yeah, so it’s more about competition than relationships. When they put competition in the formula it really places their egos on the line. The men would all be showing off their bodies constantly. It’s pretty funny. I love all the drama. Yeah, so we all know what’s going on in the show but not everybody does. The summary of the show reads: Single’s Inferno is a Korean reality TV dating show about nine incredibly attractive people co-living on an island while pursuing love. Onl
y one week. I don’t think it’s about finding love it’s really just about physical attraction. - Yes! “Oh she’s hot, I'm into that type” They’re all hot! Yeah they’re all hot, it's unbelievable. Oppa oppa So.... Up next it’s “It’s Okay To Not Be Okay” They’re arguing already? They’re always arguing. Oh yeah I love this scene. I remember this. You know it’s not working when you have to stop the car and walk out. Why are you so angry? *Cackling* I love how she talks. - Her fashion is like… I love
her voice. Her outfit is great. -Yes. And her voice is amazing. It’s like mwo. -Mwo. She’s so pretty. - Yeah~ I love her makeup as well. She’s just so perfect. - So perfect, yes. Except personality-wise haha. Oooh! Saranghae. Saranghae haha. Look at her evil smirk. Like mm hmm! - This girl knows. Gang-tae ssi Look at him, he’s just so fed up. *Giggling* He just walks away haha! - Yeah he walked away! *Cackling* She’s crazy! *Cackling* Who does this? How to say I love you in a rude way. How to o
ffend someone by saying I love you. Look at her, she's so pissed off. Still has to look pretty. - Yeah, still pretty. Still pretty, but angry. So in this scene, Gang-tae (played by Kim Soo-hyun) Mm hmm. Kim Soo-hyun , I can’t read any…. I tried my best. Gang-tae gets out of Ko Moon-young’s car and starts walking away. He turns back to say that for a while he forgot that she was different that he almost expected something out of her but that’s no longer the case. As he walks off, Ko Moon-young ca
lls out “I love you” to him thinking it’ll lure him back. He stopped momentarily, before walking away again ignoring her screaming “I love you”s over and over again. As he leaves, Ko Moon-Young is left feeling confused and gutted, as they were just starting to get along in the course of the story. Yep. - This actually was in episode 4. So they only started to get to know each other. Just about, but it wasn’t … And Kim Soo-hyun knows that the girl is crazy. Yeah, clearly. Oh, so I gathered that w
e’ve all watched this show before? Yes, we all watched it. We all watched it. - I actually wrote about it too. You write about everything almost. The fashion and the makeup mostly. Because her fashion is just so on point you have to write about it. But the story was quite different I really liked the first episodes it was very dark, twisted and a bit psychotic. I mean the whole drama is also very psychotic even till the end. They were so crazy. But what were your thoughts when you first watched
this scene? Like you mean this scene? This particular scene, yeah. I mean, I thought the guy would stop. Y’know, Kim Soo-hyun. *Giggles* Why do you struggle as well. ‘Cause if a pretty girl screams “I love you” to you many times. But he still walks away. He’s psychotic as well. Just two crazies. So just in case not everyone’s watched the show It’s Okay to Not Be Okay tells an unusual love story on emotional healing between Moon Gang-tae (played by Kim Soo-Hyun who is a stoic and de-sensitized co
mmunity health worker and Ko Moon-young (played by Seo Yea-ji) an anarchistic but successful children’s book author. So they’re both very different. -Yes! He’s like a health worker for the mentally ill. In a hospital. And then she’s just like a crazy children’s book author. That’s the thing she’s a children’s book author but she’s like an evil witch *Cackling* She’s what scares children. Yeah, that was the attracting point. The contrast was really good. I actually really liked the show at first.
and then it got a bit long They’re both so pretty and handsome. With most K-drama they all have to be pretty otherwise it’s just like… I like her figure Everything's so perfect. Yeah so perfect. Onto the next one. This is Goblin, it's super popular. Woahh what? So dramatic. Let’s start with a bang. There’s fire everywhere! Yeah. What a dramatic entrance. Ohh! So cool! - Is this the first episode? I don’t know lol. I haven’t watch it. -And then they come out. This is quite dramatic it must be a
very important scene. Oppa It’s like a music video. Yas! I love their coats. -Yeah! -With the wind and all. They look so good with the long coats. Yay it’s Gong Yoo Gong Yoo. - Gong Yoo? He’s in a lot of shows. - Squid Game! Yeah, Squid Game. And Train to Busan. Yes! He’s everywhere. Super popular. I kinda like his eyes. Like puppy eyes? Oh it stopped. sorry that’s it. - Oh OK. This is the walking scene. Walking scene stay cool haha. So this is Goblin. In this particular scene, Ji Eun Tak? I ca
n’t read their names… Ji Eun Tak? In this particular scene, Ji Eun Tak finds herself in trouble after being kidnapped by loan sharks so she starts yelling for help. Ah OK. So the car stops and all the street lights turn off. Suddenly, Kim Shin - the Goblin along with the grim reaper who happened to be with him at the time appears to come rescue her. One of the most dramatic scenes but an iconic one of the series, this is episode 2. I see~ I love Gong Yoo. He's so handsome, so perfect. You have a
lot of K-drama crushes. You love everyone so much. “I love Kim Soo-hyun” I love oppas But they’re all quite different. She has a big spectrum of types. True. - She likes all types. They just need to be oppas. Haha, yes. -Everyone is an oppa. So that scene kinda already described roughly what this is about. But can we guess what the show is about? ‘Cause I haven’t watched it yet. I think I know what this is about, so I’ll let you guys guess. Omg this is really hard. I guess as there’s a grim re
aper maybe this girl is going to die soon. Someone’s about to take her life, but she’s not meant to die and this Goblin guy came to help her or something? A little bit like a love and relationship thing. A love triangle? Probably. With two fictional characters. Yeah. What do you think, Maureen? I can’t remember. You remember? Because I sometimes would read synopsis even if I don’t follow the drama. OK. I don’t mind being spoiled. Oh. That’s good. Is it about the girl being able to see the goblin
and only she can see him? There’s…. Can I say it? You can reveal it. -Is there a sword in the goblin? Yeah, there’s like a sword. There’s a sword?! Going through Gong Yoo. What?! There was a sword in him? So you can’t see, but only the girl can see it. Ohhh No one can see the sword. So Gong Yoo thinks she’s special. So there’s something going on - She can see the sword in me There’s something between them. Probably destiny or something like that right? Yeah yeah. Wow. OK, so I do have the syno
psis here. Goblin tells a story about a 939-year-old immortal goblin Gong Yoo, Gong Yoo. Gong Yoo *giggles* and protector of souls who is in search of his bride to break his immortal curse. The bride will be the only one who can remove the sword pierced in his chest. - Ahhh!!!! That’s why it’s destiny. It sounds like Beauty and The Beast to me. Once the sword is removed and the curse is broken he can finally move to the afterlife and rest in peace. Why does he need to rest in peace? *Cackling* I
sn’t he a goblin king or something? He suffered for a long time. - He gets bored? Heartbroken for so many centuries. Yeah so, oops! Time to move on. Pull this broken heart out too. It’s a very dramatic series then. - Very. So we’ll move on to the next show. This one’s My Name, it’s quite recent. She’s so cool. So different from the other dramas. - Oooh. They’re all like pretty girls, but she’s like “don’t touch me” So she's a cop. Ahhh~ Woah woah woah. She’s fierce. She's not hesitating to pun
ch him. Wow so cool. OMG. Wow. -Wow this is quite violent. You didn’t expect this to be violent? ‘Cause I watched her in The World Of the Married. Ohh. - And she was all sweet and girly. Wow. That's... Ooh. Woah Woah! -That hurts! Ouch. She’s brutal. Yeah. I like her. She’s cool. And then there’s more! There’s more! Wow. What is this weapon? It’s what cops use. It’s like… what are they called? When they’re not prescribed pistols they have this instead. It’s kinda like a nunchuck but not really?
Wow, she knocked down all of them. Yah, just one girl. This guy just left her there, man. They’re in the same team? Yeah. Let’s pause here. -OK. What did we just watch? We watched My Name, episode 2. So this is Jo-Woo’s fight scene. Ji-Woo single-handedly picks up a stick and starts fighting the security guard the thugs in the hallway. After defeating them all, she heads to the end of the corridor and enters the nightclub to find evidence against Mango. Whose the guy they’re after. OK. - Mango
? Yeah. -The fruit, mango? Yes, the guy’s called Mango. This is one of the most impressive fight scenes throughout the drama. There’s a lot of fight scenes. She has a lot of fight scenes in this. So have you guys watched it? No, I don't think so. You guys haven’t? I did. - You already watched it? I watched it in two nights. What! I didn’t expect you to watch this. What do you mean? What do I look like I watch? *Laughs* I dunno. What do you usually watch? I watch everything. I thought you’d watch
more comedy or something. I watch everything I have very broad interests. But yeah, you can make your guess on what this drama is about. So, the guy the girl is going after is a gangster or something? Something like that. Well she’s a cop. Or against someone who ruined her life. I think you’ve read the synopsis somewhere. Me too. I think I kinda remember. Based on what you’ve read can you tell me what this drama is about? I actually don’t remember. I only remember it’s about revenge? Yes, reven
ge is a huge keyword. - I’m just guessing. Let me tell you what this drama is about. My Name revolves around Yoon Ji-Woo a woman determined to avenge the death of her father. She trains hard then joins an organized crime ring and infiltrates the police as an undercover agent to find out the truth about her father’s death. Oh she’s an agent. - She’s a double agent. That’s why they were all wearing earphones. Yeah, so they’re cops. but she’s an undercover agent disguised as a cop. Ah OK. - So it’s
a very long-winded story but it was really good. It’s quite action-packed. And there’s a lot of good fight scenes but a bit brutal. There’s blood everywhere, every episode. I love it. You see this pretty girl getting smashed every episode. There’s blood on her face all the time and you wonder how does she look so good when she’s half beaten up. It’s amazing. The only thing I remember hearing about this series is that in the last episode, she kinda has a sex scene? *Cackling* I dunno if it’s ne
cessary? And that’s on the news? -Yeah. It was on the news? I just read about it somewhere. I didn't watch the scene. - Yeah there is a sex scene at the end. I do feel the sex scene was a bit pointless. It feels like they just put it in there for the sake of putting in a sex scene. Maybe they wanted to push her more. so more people would notice her? Because she’s quite new as an actress. - Ohhh. - True. She’s really good in this series. She really does fight well. I feel like she trained hard f
or the part. But I do agree, the last episode was a bit …. I didn’t like the last episode. I was like, whut. I liked the series as a whole though. So this is My Name. -Got it. The next one is so iconic I don't even need to introduce it. You guys will know. - Yes. Already. *Laughs* That song. Squid Game Ooh. I just can’t believe he moved. Such an idiot. I mean, he thought it was a game. When you don’t take games seriously. True. Oooh. Bang. That’s such a terrible mugshot. It’s so creepy, that dol
l. Yah. I can’t believe he thought it was fake. OMG. He heard BANG, come on. He thought it was like BB guns or something? Stop moving you idiot. This is what happens when you don’t take games seriously. Wahh! And it all started. Yup. - Ahhh~ This is where we’ll stop before it gets too bloody. So yeah, Squid Game. So what happened in this scene? The 456 players dressed in green tracksuits placed in a surreal-looking playing field. Very surreal. They’re about to play a game of Red Light Green Lig
ht which is basically like if it's in the western perspective it’s like “What’s the time Mr Wolf”. Ah. -That’s what I used to play when I was in school. So kinda similar, Red Light Green Light against a giant robotic doll. Creepiest doll ever. As soon as the game starts, one of the players was shot when he moved during the red light signal and this is when everyone finally realizes that “elimination” meant being killed on the spot. My 7 year old nephew actually knows about the game as well. He k
nows how to sing that song. *Laughs* So your 7 year old nephew? Yes. My nephew also knows how to sing this song too. He’s always like suru da da da da sumida. And you’re like “ Do you even know where this song is from?” Did he watch the whole drama? I mean, can they? What’s the age rating? *Laughs* It's so bloody. Isn’t it like 18+? It’s 16+! Maybe he accidentally watched it. So many kids dressed up for Halloween as... There were so many! It’s the parents. The kids never watched Squid Game don't
think they’re allowed to watch it. Maybe they somehow got a glimpse when their parents were watching. When the parents are asleep, they’d crawl into their Netflix and watch everything. So many people dressed up like the Squid Game in Halloween. The doll! People dressed up as the doll. Yeah, the doll, the main characters in the green tracksuits. The green tracksuit was easy And also the red one. Oh the uh... -The staffs. The staffs lol. -With the mask. You make them sound so harmless. The staffs
! *Laughs* The killers? They’re bodyguards? The guards! I think it’s the same, don't worry. What were your thoughts when you first watched Squid Game? First watched this scene of Squid Game. I mean, shocked. And also, my facial expression was the same as the people behind them. Am I gonna die now? Should I not move? *Laughs* I love the aesthetics of it. I love the editing and the cinematography. It’s very surreal. I actually finished the whole season in one to two nights. I think, one night? One
night… how did you There were a lot of episodes. They're like an hour long per episode. You just didn’t sleep all night. -Yeah! I just didn’t sleep. But because at the end of each episode there’s always a cliffhanger. Yeah true . - So you have to keep going. Yeah I have to keep going. I think it’s the K-drama of the year, last year. It’s a very unusual K-drama. Usually it’s a romcom. The plot is quite expected but the way it’s presented is different. Actually, on IMDB, the rating is really low.
Oh really? They rated it like 5 or something. Because really it’s nothing new. But it’s quite shocking since people were able to watch it internationally. I’ve seen so many similar stories before similar movies, similar dramas in Japanese. Yeah, in Japan. Like throughout the years I think it’s only new to people who never really watch this type. What would you do if you were playing the actual Squid Game? Wow me, I think I’ll die immediately. *Laughs* I mean, I’ll laugh and I’ll move. What abou
t you Maureen? I think I’ll just drop out, it’s not worth it. You’d drop out straight away? OH yeah there was a part where they were allowed to drop out. They were allowed to vote and ... - And never come back. But these people were really desperate. I feel like we can’t relate in that aspect. Like I don’t owe people a lot of money. Fortunately. So after watching all these clips I’ve prepared for you. Which one of them left a really lasting impression on you? I like the first one. Single's Infe
rno. You love that show. You just watched it. ‘Cause the girls and the boys are so…. Like their body shapes and their faces. The first thing she says, “ their body shapes” haha. Muscles! You must have loved Too Hot To Handle. Yeah Too Hot To Handle too. But less trashy I feel like. But I like oppas. I feel like they’re a bit more subtle when they’re not … I dunno, Too Hot to Handle was really trashy. But it was quite funny. How about you? - What about you? It has to be the Squid Game. You know,
I kinda have a dark side. *Laughs* She has a very dark side. Really? Sometimes she shocks me with what she watches. I’m like “you watched that!?” *Laughs* I actually love Korean movies like those from Park Chan-wook. How do you pronounce that? Which movie? I need to put all these names down ‘cause I don’t know. You know the director for Handmaiden? Handmaiden! He mainly does vengeance movies. I like those. Oh, Old Boy as well. Old Boy is a classic. My god she has very dark tastes. Everything is
violent and bloody and dark. Old Boy, yeah I remember. So, you’ll kind of know why I like the Squid Game. I thought Squid Game would be too mild for you. Have you heard of Kim Ki-duk? Kim Ki-duk? Another director. He did Spring, Summer, Autumn, Winter. What is that? I’m really bad, sorry. Oh and Iron 3. Actually, sorry, he died of covid. He’s quite controversial. And his movies are really violent. Next time we should do a Korean movie reaction video. That will be fun. What’s yours? Mine? From th
e list? Ah you know I have such a weird mix. But recently I’ve been watching Itaewon Class. Ah Itaewon Class. I do really enjoy Itaewon Class. And also Park Seo-joon? I like Park Seo-joon. So that’s on the top of my list. I feel like the story has more balance. I actually don’t like when Korean dramas get too romantic. Ah true. It feels like their romances are kinda mild? Nothing happens, there’s no sex scenes. Not even a kiss and suddenly Suddenly they love each other. It’s a bit too pure for m
e. How about The World of The Married? Have you watched that? No, I haven’t. You don’t have a lot of sex scenes. But there are affairs. Is that a main point for you to choose? Yeah, that’s very important. It's very important. It’s realistic. I see. Thanks for watching and remember to like, comment and subscribe and turn on your notifications. So, that’s all really. Thanks! Bye bye!
