Salam and good day to all With me again, Hafiz from Tderr Tech In this video, I want to share with you guys on how to setup this Raspberry Pi mini computer module and make it as your personel retro game console so that you can connect it to your home TV and enjoy your favorite retro old school games This episode is also an additional to my previous episode which I shared about my awesome project Homemade Retro Game Arcade so if you haven't watch it yet, go check it out If you've notice in that v
ideo, I didn't mention in detail on how to setup the Raspberry Pi 3 mini computer module that I used as the emulation station in the arcade So in this video I will explain step by step on how to setup the Raspberry Pi module If you don't have plan to build your own retro arcade but still want to enjoy your favorite old school games definitely this video is also for you guys I will show you how to set the things up and how to get all those retro game files All you need are this Raspberry Pi mini
computer module and your favorite game controller like this one Now lets see what other things that you need and how to setup our Retro Game Console First of course you will need the Raspberry Pi module I recommend the Raspberry Pi 3+, but you can also get the latest Raspberry Pi 4 module. Its up to you. Also don't forget to get the case and heat sink for the Pi A Micro SD memory card, minimum 32GB, recommended 64GB For your info, the Pi module don't have built-in storage So you will need the mi
croSD to store all your data A USB card reader to flash the microSD card A dedicated power adaptor for Raspberry Pi module Monitor or LCD TV (with HDMI input) HDMI cable 1 OR 2 USB game controller or get this Nintendo-style game controller for nostalgic feeling A USB stick for transfering games from PC to the Pi (optional) A USB keyboard to enter wifi password and you will need a laptop/PC to prepare the SD card and to transfer games Can use either Windows OR Mac Now we have all the parts, lets
see how to setup the console First we need to prepare the microSD card with Retropie OS Use the USB memory card reader to connect the card to laptop Next we will format the SD card use the exFAT file system and select Start Next we need to download the Retropie OS image Go to www.retropie.org.uk Go to Download page Here you can see 3 different version of Retropie image Depends on Raspberry Pi module that you have.. make sure to download the right image for your Pi module Next we need to download
the software to flash the image into the SD card Go to www.balena.io select 'More Products' then select balenaEtcher download the software based on OS you're using we need to unpack/unrar the image (in .gz format) run the balenaEtcher software browse and select the Retropie OS image (.img format) select our SD card select 'Flash!' and wait until process complete now we have successfully preparing the SD card disconnect the SD card now our SD card (with Retropie OS) is ready Next, before we can
connect the Raspberry Pi to the TV or monitor we will install the heat sinks to these chips and we will install the case this official case from Raspberry Pi maker is very easy to install since no screw needed and don't forget to put in the SD card Connect the HDMI cable to TV/monitor connect the USB gamepad, the USB keyboard, and finally the power adaptor cable now we will boot into the Retropie OS the 1st boot normally will take some time after boot up, we will get this 'Welcome' message and a
lso '1 Gamepad Detected' we will mapping our game controller buttons just follow the instructions shown by Retropie for button that the controller doesn't have just press & hold to skip that button press 'Select' button for Hotkey and this is another example for mapping Xbox 360 game controller like the one that I have basically the same step except this controller have more buttons than previous one make sure to set all the buttons and joysticks same goes for Hotkey, press 'Select' Now we have
succesfully boot to Retropie OS as you can see, there are still no game in the Retropie main menu. So I will show how to transfer games in the next step before that lets connect the Pi to wifi in the configuration, go to WIFI page for your info, in the latest version of Retropie (4.6) you'll need to set the wifi country first before you can enable the built-in wifi so select Yes go to 'Localisation Options' select 'Change Wi-fi Country' then select your preferred country (in my case Malaysia) go
back to the WIFI setup page connect to Wifi network and select your home Wifi key in the password (use the USB keyboard) and now your Raspberry Pi is connected to the Wifi also take note this IP address of your Pi we need this to transfer game using network Final step, we will transfer games to the Pi In general, there are 2 ways to transfer game first using a USB thumbdrive second, using wifi or network I will show you both ways but before that, we will download some games files or better know
n as game ROM you can google 'retro game rom' there a tons of site that you can get free rom the one that I like is this site in this Console page, there many kind of retro system in their collections you can download whatever game that you like but this is very slow process since you to download one by one there is faster way to download all this ROMs which is using torrent (if you're familiar with it) search for 'retro rom' you will find this famous collection with more than six thousand ROMs
in it if you download this torrent collection you'll need to mount the .iso image only then you can access all the ROMs for various system/console the ROM files that we want is in this folder this is the files that we will tranfer to our Pi To transfer games using USB thumbdrive first connect the drive to your laptop/PC create a folder in the drive and change the name to 'retropie' disconnect the drive and connect to the Pi (which is still turned ON) wait a few minutes or until the LED stops bl
inking disconnect from the Pi and reconnect to PC now Retropie has create 3 more subfolder named BIOS, configs and roms in the roms folder, you can see that Retropie has create all the folder based on types of console that are supported so we will put the roms in these folder respectively now copy the roms from SNES folder in the collection and paste it in the 'snes' folder in USB drive Also you don't need to unzip the rom file Retropie will do the unzip itself You can choose one by one if you w
ant but I don't have the time so just select everything and paste all at once Lets copy few more games for Gameboy Advance (GBA) copy from the collection and put it in the 'gba' folder So basically thats how you transfer the games copy/paste to the same console from the collection disconnect the drive and reconnect to the Pi let the Pi to copy all the roms to the SD card this will depends on how many roms you've copied more roms will make it longer to copy once the transfer completed, we need to
restart the emulation station now you can see all the consoles that you have transferred will appear in the main menu now you can play all the games now I'll show how to transfer roms using network first make sure the Pi still ON and connected to wifi and your laptop also use the same network click on the address bar and type \\ followed by the Pi IP address type in 'pi' for username and 'raspberry' for password and now you can access the root directory in the Pi next step is the same as transf
ering using USB drive we will transfer roms just like we did before I will copy roms from Sega Megadrive folder simply drag and drop all the roms disadvantage transferring roms using network transfer speed is slower than using USB drive for transfering larger game files like PS one roms it is recommended to use USB drive instead again the same step, restart emulation station and now you can play all your favorite retro games lets try a few games to test the console extra tips #1 in case you cann
ot play any game you can try to change to different emulator during the game loads, press any button you will access to this option menu select #1 option here you can see different type of emulator in the system try to select any other emulator and launch the game if you can load the game then it means that the emulator is compatible for that rom extra tips #2 to play PS one games, you will need the PS One rom files that normally come in these format (.bin .cue .iso) you'll also need the special
BIOS file you can check in the BIOS folder (in the Pi) if this file available - scph1001.bin if you have it, then you can play PS One game without problem if in case you don't have it, then you can download the file from internet download and extract the file copy and paste it in the BIOS folder and now you can start to play PS One game extra tips #3 after finish playing games with the console please properly shutdown the system go to QUIT then select 'SHUTDOWN SYSTEM' then your Pi will do prop
er shutdown So how was it guys? its so easy right? on how to setup the Raspberry Pi as your very own personal retro gaming console so I hope this video will help you with the setup process using Retropie OS If you like this video, don't forget to Like and Share and Subscribe to my channel I will bring more interesting DIY project like this see you in the next video, Salam!
