in this unit we are going to learn about one of
the successful educational actions which is the dialogic literary gatherings also known as tlg as
you already know successful educational actions are implemented in thousands of schools
worldwide in particular in the schools as learning communities what are the dlgs exactly how
are they carried out and what impact do they have can i implement dlgs in my school we will
clarify all these questions in this video to do so i will divide the present
ation into
three main blocks first we will see the origins and the turning points of dlgs then we will
go in depth into the implementation process and third and finally i will highlight
some evidence of the impact achieved of the dlgs when they are applied and also
after the implementation so let's start to learn a little bit more about the origins and
turning points of the dlgs the geologic literary gatherings involve the collective construction
of meaning and knowledge through egalitaria
n dialogue among the participants in the group
that constitute that make up the gathering to do so the dialogic learning and the seven
principles that define it are enacted in the dlg drawing on this learning conception the dlg
is put into practice dialogic reading where people make meaning of the reading when engaging
in dialogue with others that is in more spaces during more time with more people specifically in
dialogic literary gatherings the dialogues focus on the greatest literary wor
ks those masterpieces
which humanity has accumulated over the centuries are choosing to be read and to build a foundation
of subsequently shared dialogues the dlg is born in a particular school for adults located in
a working-class neighborhood in barcelona spain that was in the 80s la verneda san martin that is
the name of this school offered a real opportunity to overcome inequalities by giving illiterate
adults the chance to learn at the highest level possible since then adults at this s
pecific
school with very diverse profiles meet and discuss very important books from the classical
literature such as hamlet by shakespeare uh kafka's metamorphosis omers eliad and many
other masterpieces of the universal literature participating in this dialogic space represented a
transformation in the lives of these participants people who have become literate people who have
read a book for the first time and people who have become passionate readers of the most important
literary mast
erpieces in the world thus reading lorca cervantes joy sappho and many others since
then the dialogic literary gatherings have spread to other centers and entities all over the world
initially within the framework of adult education and much more widely afterwards today it is one
of the most implemented successful educational actions they are being applied successfully
and as we mentioned later not only from early childhood education to higher education but
they also take place in family ed
ucation and in community centers in libraries outdoor spaces
imprisoned and even in psychiatric hospitals now that we know the origins of the dlgs and the
main axis of the successful educational action remember the seven principles of dialogic learning
and the classic readings we are moving to the next section to talk about the implementation
process of the dialogic literary gatherings in order to achieve the success that uh we have
highlighted and that we will also mention in section three
it is relevant to know which
are the steps the functionings of the dlgs that produce this success as well before the tlg
session participants in the group that is the participants that constitute that dlg choose
the book that they want to read from a list of books that are always from the classical
literature those masterpieces each person including both the teachers or the teacher and the
students choose the book that they want to read and they explain the reasons why
they would like to
read the book after the participants in the in the group
reach an agreement regarding how many pages they will read of course this happens after
deciding which book they want to read then they start with the gatherings and then
they organize how they plan to work for the meeting this process is repeated
every time the group starts reading a new book once the book is chosen and the participants
agree on the section they want to read all the participants will read it on
their own at home or
at any other place identifying a paragraph data they enjoy
particularly and they also think in advance why they choose that paragraph their arguments
their views on that particular selection during the gathering participants discuss the
reading focusing always on the chosen paragraphs the participants are just able to speak raising
their hands and the moderator is the one in charge of giving the floor to the participants always
respecting the speaking terms when speaking participants need t
o read the paragraph aloud
and share the reasons why she or he has chosen it once the paragraph and the arguments were
shared by the participants the moderator opens up the discussion to everyone so that
other participants in the group may comment on each paragraph selected by another person
but they give their different views or opinions this process is repeated for each paragraph
until the time of the gathering is over the duration of the dlgs is up to the participants
it can be it can l
ast for an hour or it can last for two hours uh we do have a range of examples
in this regard again at the end of the session the process of agreeing how many pages will
be read for the next gathering is repeated as you could deduce the facilitator's role is
key during the dmgs even though the status of the person facilitating this dynamics is equal to
anyone else he or she is responsible for ensuring everyone everyone's right to contribute to the
dialogue always respecting other people's o
pinions and managing the turn-taking in other words
the facilitator is a responsible person for guaranteeing that the seven principles of
the dialectic learning approach are respected let's see to what extent this particular
activity is contributing to improvement of both academic and social skills in many
diverse contexts all around the world regarding this impact as we have mentioned
previously the first experience of the dialogic literary governments took place in dimension
school in th
e barnetta san martial school this was a pioneer experience
that has been published in the harvard educational review nonetheless that
was only the starting point of the wide expansion of the dialogic literary gatherings phenomenon
now we have a vast range of experiences of dlgs around the world and all those
experiences are achieving important impact for instance focusing on the academic outputs
or instrumental competencies on basic education the tngs have been proved to be very useful
in
order to improve classic text comprehension and interpretation as well as for acquiring
a school relevant language skills which we know are very important in terms of raising
academic achievement different publications in top-ranked scientific journals have
reported these achievements we can also have evidence and you can also check that evidence
and about the impact of the geologic literary gatherings regarding the transformation of the
classroom climate and the students relationship the
results of research that have focused
on this particular dimensions of learning have also been reported in academic journals
ranked in the top positions of the journal citation reports the results of this article
support that biologic literary gatherings allow students and teachers to get to know better each
other and to build relationships based on trust there's also research done in the case
of students with special needs and for the particular case of these students
thanks to dialogic l
iterary gatherings we can expand these students interaction
and learning opportunities to ultimately offer them high quality learning environments
that include better support higher supports and that promote the educational and
social inclusion of a student with special needs therefore we can see that the dialogic literary
gatherings have a considerable remarkable impact with very diverse students moreover but it has
been recently shown the tlg maintain the strong effect on positive consequ
ences both when they
take place in face face-to-face interactions but also in virtual sessions in this regard there
was a research reported in one academic journal and which focused on dlgs that were conducted
during home confinement given the carbon 19 pandemic in those cases the dlgs took place
virtually but they achieve the same important impact in terms of academic skills and also
in relation to social dimensions of learning as other biologic literary gatherings
that take place face to
face have achieved because all of this we can affirm that the
dialogic literary gatherings are an efficient educational action to all participants involved
regardless of age gender culture or ability now i just want to end this video by mentioning
the words of a fifth grader who was reflecting on the learning opportunities that the dlgs provided
to her and to her classmates thanks to the dlg's ensuring egalitarian dialogue and an atmosphere
based based on trust in her class she said a very
important thing that i have learned in the
gatherings is what my classmates think and the way they think i couldn't have imagined they were
thinking the things they say in the gatherings for example when we are debating i think one thing one
issue and someone else thinks differently about the same matter at first i had the impression
that all of us thought in the same manner and i think now that everyone has their own way of
thinking we never get annoyed with each other in the gathering no
t even when we have different
opinions at times my mind has changed an idea that i originally didn't agree with but the
reasoning of my friends has convinced me sometimes i didn't understand when i they said
something and by listening in the gathering i eventually understood it for example that's what
happened with royalty i didn't understand what it meant but after listening to my friend
in the gathering i finally understood it
