h my social media interaction was recently highlighted in
an article covering uh the usfl in their debut joining us here to talk United States football
Colby Dan aka the danta base Colby I noticed you were not in that article I was it was about people
making fun of the usfl attendance I pointed out that they should really NFL never had that problem
though Sean right the NFL go back to 1920 and 1930 and 1940 they were having a hard time getting uh
teams to uh to have fans come out to watch g
ames I gotta be honest you can actually go all the way
back to the 1960s I'm worried I'm worried you're gonna pull a muscle maybe injure something that's
uh irrecoverable when you're starting a league out it takes time to build it and they're building
it the right way you're getting on a plane to Columbia soon let's not pull any muscle all
right should they what is the uh so the issue is just that they're not having the games in the
home cities well they did for a couple teams on Saturday t
hey played at home yeah come on Saturday
the two games were were actually I don't know decent I don't want to say their sellouts but uh
what was the attendance on the decent games it was pretty good it was up from last year I know that
but obviously you know they only had one statement visually it wasn't great right like this is this
is the problem but so Birmingham and Memphis are the only teams that'll ever have an actual home
game no no no no this week it's going to be Canton and Michiga
n Detroit so it switches well Canton
doesn't like the team's playing in Canton aren't no one is actually at home in Japan true but
they're like people Michigan will be playing at home they have a true home field Crazy Birmingham
has a true home field but but crazy in Memphis has a true crazy Theory why not give teams to the
cities where you can have the game well they will I think they just don't want to blow their their
finances you know what I mean I think that's but I'm just saying inste
ad of the Philadelphia
Stars why are they not the Detroit Stars because they have the Michigan Panthers no but
I'm just saying like if they can only play in any certain that's another question to me is
why did you not attempt to do like a tightly knit geolocation of cities let's say all in the
Northeast so travel wasn't that crazy it didn't it is an odd Jersey DC bully both leagues took
the approach of enduring the pandemic I think we were just tricked to thinking oh this will be
easier bu
t why would you try to launch a league without home crowd and culture and all the stuff
that makes Sports great I mean not just [ __ ] on the league but it seems like both strategies were
oddly similar is see I think the XFL even though even though two of their like St Louis and DC
are showing up the point here is that someone like an actuary made these decisions not someone
who understands the business of football I don't I know I agree with the usfl right now because I
think if you're try
ing to you're you're they're proving that it's sustainable they had uh an
increase in TV ratings even going up against you you know the XFL and NBA but they're missing
like this is where I don't they're missing the element of sport which is people from an area
all room for a [ __ ] team I think that's for no good reason I think that's there for next year
but why not partner up with Southwest so wherever Southwest flies that's where you can have the but
forget flights we literally have some
regions in this country you could have easily slapped eight
teams and figured out how to bust people around but I I think you'd probably deal with the same
problem for some of them you know what I mean like we're here's the big look the XFL is playing
on their home stadiums and only two of them are packed well let's uh let's get to it still that's
that's big two stadiums full of people true but you got to wonder how much money is that gonna be
costing them I think I think they're clearly th
e more unstable league right now compared to the US
well two things one you're gonna sell more tickets if you're actually selling to a home crowd so the
other side of this which might be even more Bleak which is there they lose money every time they
have to open the doors to these buildings and so that that's the scary part because it to me it
would make more sense that the Philadelphia Stars could sell more tickets in Philadelphia it would
make sense that the Jersey generals would have a b
etter chance selling tickets uh even the [ __ ]
MLS has a travel budget well so this is where I get a little worried that both of these leagues
where you know you know you know what's between us and success skimping on the travel budget that's
confusing to me I think they need to Target uh uh MLS stadiums because like to me I would imagine
Ford Field or or whatever the uh this the the now we're talking show these others you went to a game
you went to a game at the whatever the the Dignity H
ealth Center now whatever it's called which is
great bill for science experience but you watch the football game there and how was it it's like
I mean I don't want to speak for you Sean but I'm saying like to me it was like a very intimate so
it's a great place to catch a game and yeah if you've ever been to lafc Stadium in downtown L.A
it's it's a there's not a bad seat in the house if you played football there it would [ __ ] work
yeah so again it's like why do you you skimp on the Travel
not the stadium find cheaper Stadium
that's crazy I think I still think that they're trying to make sure it I think this year was
more caution like last year they rushed so the usfl tells me they're not sticking with these
cities that's what it tells me really I I think I think they'll I think they're not making an
investment in the city because they're still undecided no I think and they want flexibility
another good season like last year I think they needed to see it going up against com
petition I
think they want flexibility to move move teams around I just don't think you're going to wake
up I don't think you're gonna build a fan base without home games I think it's agree I I think
long term sure I agree with you but I think right now when you're trying you I think right now
you're just trying to see that it is sustainable from a viewing standpoint yeah but that's why
it's owned by Fox but what's it owned by no no I understand that but what doesn't make sense from
that p
erspective is the viewing like the viewing the the Aesthetics of the product are better if
they're at home with home fans understandably but not if you're gonna go into the red well you
didn't even see first that that millions are going to be watching the [ __ ] product I think that's
what they're figuring out they bought the rights this past offseason to a bunch of other teams
no no look I I I I understand what they think they're trying to do and I'm just saying that
neither one of these o
rganizations are being run by football people or or anyone that's run a
sport before that would be my take because they're not they're running it like talking about Booth
Johnson they're running it like it's a TV product or running it like they wanted us well they're
running it like they already owe a bunch of people money and they want to scale it out to as many
teams as possible and honestly the the salute we all know what the solution is going to be we're
going to have the XFL conference
and the usfl conference there's going to be one spring league
and that's going to be that because eight teams is not in America baby eight teams is not enough
you never saw a Burger King go with McDonald's all right well again I don't really know literally
the AFC uh the AFL joined the NFL and formed the greatest football league at the Super Bowl why
not do something similar have the XFL in the USA why does fox need to do that what do you mean Fox
why is this a fox they own the whole entir
e usfl yeah but I mean but so that they have a viable
problem because if you don't like if you're so think of it this way if you are building something
to compete against something else you will never have a hundred percent of the pie unless you
acquire that other thing all right I I think we fixed the uh USA Sean's checked out I can
tell you it's just Colby doesn't get our point he does get him I do but I just don't think you
go into it in year two I think you go I think I like the process
of saying hey we're going to
prove that we can go up against another spring League uh because they clearly rushed it last
year to get ahead of the XFL because the XFL had announced that they're coming out in 2023
I think it's crazy to compete against the XFL why because no one's gonna follow I mean they just
did better ratings than they did last year without the XFL because in very very I don't know I I
don't think it's sustainable to compete against another spring League at the same time
who's got
the better cities right now xfo usfl better I mean usfl is Philly that's way better I don't know
I mean Philly's not supposed to see in St Louis what do you mean they're not supporting the team
they don't have a stadium well they can't support the time but but I mean Birmingham definitely okay
yeah so let's revisit the conver if you're going to pick four cities Why not pick [ __ ] Philly is
one of like why not have these I actually think that would probably have your worst fan tur
nout
in Philly because because it's a pro market okay here's here's here's what else do they got
going on in Birmingham it makes sense yeah I like Birmingham yeah but I like I don't understand
why are you having a game in Canton between the generals and mallers yeah what what's the
relevance of having Canton be involved I mean it's just a historical why not get Canton a team yeah
I'm on board like dogs need to come you can't have to that isn't their home oh I don't care about
that I don't
you hear about that this year long term sure yeah I we can move on but I I do think
sports are built like the idea of sport was always built around rooting for your guy right like back
to the [ __ ] Gladiators I understand but to me no they're not going to play it in the Coliseum I
hope they play in the ocean it's too much travel for the Gladiators they're gonna play it in Sicily
uh they're gonna be the Rome gladiators they're gonna be playing the game there's actually four
hubs and they're
gonna travel together I mean the Huns they don't the the travel for the Huns you
got you got lodging fee for the barbarians I I do think you guys are logistic nightmare I think
you guys are short selling like why all the other leagues failed is because they rushed into that
and I think that's why the usfl is doing this really smart really smart by far like I think I
don't know if any of the leagues I think this is by far the smartest approach I've ever seen but
but what if I like last thin
g I'll say what if the solution was to start in a smaller region of
the country and not try to blow it out by being all over the nation where you're gonna incur
more costs here's here's just one thing okay Southeast all right all right certainty teams
uh so you have only a certain number of sites where you can host the games okay because it
cuts down on travel right why would that those teams or those cities be the same cities you have
the teams right that's a good probably the cost Philade
lphia is probably much more expensive
to her house up on Southwest like so instead of the Pittsburgh Ballers they're the Canton
mallers oh but you're gonna ruin the history then but no one following the league
followed the original U.S I kind of disagree buddy I I think a lot of people
do really I think a lot of people connect I mean when was the usfl last Ran 86. So you
think the people that weren't watching the usfl for for 17 years are getting back in I do think
there's some uh I defini
tely think there's some I remember when I had the Arkansas uh when I
was doing Arkansas State's college football team preview their guy came on and uh I was
explaining that I also host the usfl podcast and he was like Hey Memphis is getting a team I'm
excited about that I used to have season tickets to Memphis back in 85. that's great because
he was going to the games yeah yeah I just I again using the Southwest that literal analogy
they built their Airline by not going to Major hubs and ha
ving to pay those exorbitant fees
to park their airplanes there they went to the smaller cities these leaks could have done that
but they chose to do this and it's just it it's a weird I understand you're they're going slow yeah
I think they don't want to blow it up I think next year or the year after they'll be in their home
uh their home environments 100 chance that there's one spring League I'm just saying I think having
30 000 people in the St Louis Stadium helps the XFL great see grow
fans and become survival yeah
I agree and that's my one takeaway from this week I thought the usfl product was way better than the
XFL but I thought the home environments obviously I think watching the game live and coming back to
my original tweet of saying they should really let the usfl fans in the games watching it in front
of no fans it felt like coveted times and it killed the energy I think watching it live that
being said I'm a football guy that being said that being said I still we
nt three
and one eight yes hitting that lock hitting at 75 percent ziti Mills in the chat
saying uh not gonna lie I haven't watched a second of either League just here for the funny
banter and hot takes well you came to the right place CD Mills oh I realized I swapped my
hot take sound effect four the NFL draft sound effects draft season why does that sound so
distant I don't know maybe turn your headphones up it's a it's a I think it's you guys find just
that one right no it's just a live
sound from as if we're at the NFL draft we're on the clock
NFL draft week is next week uh but here we're we're talking usfl week two picks again coming
off a a scorching three in one uh week for myself uh any other any other big takeaways from week
one Colby uh you know I thought I thought this is what I will say like from looking at last season
week one I thought it was a lot sloppier than this year week one I think the some of that continuity
they look I I have a nice nugget here for you
on the fact they only threw four interceptions it's
compared to uh you go back to the aaf week one 12 interceptions the XFL this year 12 interceptions
right the XFL uh 2021 I think had nine this league only had four and you could see to me I know Jay
Mark shout out to Jay mark from the old-fashioned football podcast you know when I had gotten them
on to to do the XFL show and we were talking pre-episode the first thing you noticed was how
much cleaner was the game uh the offenses and the d
efenses in in the uh the the usfl essentially so
I was like yeah right away I I noticed that that popped and I thought the totals were made a lot
of sense to go over on a lot of those which hit Birmingham uh 27-10 against the generals
Kramer pointed out Birmingham seems to be on another level and again they were five and a
half Point favorites at home seemed to dominate the uh generals there Ryan you worried
about your generals coming into this oh so I'll say it like this all right generals
are still number three in the power ratings by by a wide margin to me don't panic I don't so
I I again we came into this we what do we always say the good teams are generally a lot better than
the bad teams early we identified three teams as being much better than everyone else two of them
happened to play Colby thinks the game was closer than I did but I mean they got in the end zone or
they got in the red zone five times you only get one score that's how you lose a football game they
bo
th seem like they're obviously gonna be bet on teams this week and again like you think there's
some bad generals leading the league in rushing so I mean well it's the same thing as last year I
mean they they're just permingham and that will be an interesting matchup this week it does seem like
you can run on this Birmingham team uh in spite of like a pretty decent defense and obviously they
I think New Jersey's just very unique in their rushing attack I'm telling you like you're gonna
see
Birmingham and New Jersey butt [ __ ] these teams what about I don't want to ruin the previous
the only uh the only dog to win and cover was the Michigan Panthers one point dog they win 29-13 we
were all in Houston and I think Houston's pretty bad I maybe Kevin someone not a bad coach
maybe well Curtis Johnson doesn't know he's know what he's doing as well but I can tell you
this with Michigan you know bad Jeff Fisher was as a coach because they pretty much have the
same roster didn't reall
y in fact and Josh love looking like Broadway job is that is that uh
is that is that what I was getting at is are we high on the Panthers or do we just think the
uh The Gambler sucks we were we were going down to Jake Locker Rabbit Hole earlier where we kind
of learned that you watched Jessica me and Jake Locker quit football as a company for looking at
efficiency uh for ourselves watching 15 20 minutes of Jake Locker highlights probably not well we
were trying to make sure that it's approp
riate to label Anthony Richardson the Jake Locker of this
draft and not will Levis just because of this the color of his skin Colby was very offended I I feel
like Anthony Richardson and and Jake Locker is a better company anyway the point being Jeff Fisher
made Jake Locker quit football maybe Jeff Fisher was really bad and we should have upgraded why he
ever wanted to coach the Michigan Panthers I have no idea because they dropped a bag did they he's
a football guy I don't think they get p
aid that much and I don't know what else is he doing yeah
I think if anything he probably didn't want to coach them a second year because they were moving
to Detroit what was the joke he was building rooms that were nine foot seven months wait where were
they the first year Birmingham everyone was in Birmingham Alabama so Birmingham is that much of
a better place than Detroit Jeff Fisher I think has a house in Tennessee that's not far away it
seems like a good Detroit hold on Colby we might
need to pull up a map right what do you mean Colby
is a map expert Kramer be careful just I know we like to study the maps here but you're talking
about how far is Birmingham from Tennessee it's not that far buddy come on he could drive home on
weekends stick to your approach he could still he could still get home for his moonshine I know
my recruiting all right um yeah I mean I look I so yeah that would be my takeaway Jeff Fisher
garbage I mean that was impressive let's see if they can I
had that take uh so 12 years ago bottom
three teams we're the worst who are the worst three teams uh Houston Pittsburgh's defense looks
awesome their offense looks terrible uh they look like San Antonio in the uh yeah and I would say
actually New Orleans New Orleans got to win but they didn't look very good so those three standard
I was actually impressed I thought Memphis despite them losing they look way better on the line of
scrimmage way better on the line of scrimmage than a year ago w
hen they were the Tampa Bay band it's
the same roster for the most part without Jordan TAMU and a couple running backs I think they're
improved we'll see if they can be consistent uh but that they jumped out to me Michigan's
Improvement Josh love was player of the week he only had like two completions yeah so real quick
then just glance at the Futures Pittsburgh 15-1 Houston 1101 Memphis 850 Michigan 6-1 Nolan's
550 generals 450 Stars 380 stallions 225. seems like they've already figured ou
t
who's good and who is why would you not take Philly a plus 380 right there they
Philly looked like they had missed a beat um is there a fort do you feel like Michigan
New Orleans should be this close to Jersey I mean that is it that is pretty big movement
again considering there's eight teams I gave out the Stars uh every season yeah at plus 550
now it's all the way down to uh what is it 380. I think right there what you just listed I
think the showboats are the one because in the South
someone's gonna make the playoffs New
Orleans did not look very good I think I know we only it's only a small you know size that we saw
but Memphis looks better than New Orleans to me I think we're gonna after we see Philly I mean
we'll get into it but after we see Philly play this week's game I think we'll maybe understand
a bit more but yeah I mean maybe to Colby's point like the South it does feel like stallions
are a runaway for a train I mean you can pencil them in to make the playoffs
yeah but
again that's that second spot in the South um does have some value we're already penciling
in Philly in New Jersey there's one more playoffs I think you take a shot on Memphis plus 850. well
I generals are again they're they lost that first game we'll see how they bounce back and I think
Michigan's an interesting team because if six to one's bad odds though dude when you play in the
spring league and you only have two incompletions I I've watched a lot of spring football in my
li
fe and I'm like whoa you're impressed what is I mean normally you have like you're at like
50 completion percentage you know what I mean so and Houston even though they're 11-1 like
isn't that they gotta go out I was thinking this right now Houston I mean I'd rather take
Pittsburgh at 15 to one than than Houston at 11. well one of them's got to go out and sign
Kyle Slaughter he's sitting there he's better than the quarterbacks in Houston he's better than
the quarterbacks of Pittsburgh Balle
rs are in the north it's like the same problem the Viper by the
Vipers have they're just gonna they're just not as good as the other teams in there yeah well
that's why Michigan's an interesting play but you feel like the generals and and I'm with you
I think I think I'll uh I'll take some of that Showboat time yeah I think I think the showboats
are the investment for this week and maybe some more generals plus 450. I like it uh I mean uh
the quarterback who's the the second quarterback the
y use which team were you talking to New Jersey
uh they were uh Dakota pro cop from the CFL uh he he's not bad yeah he might be
better than uh our guy Perez yeah he's certainly more athletic I can tell
you that that's going to be an interesting team because they don't the offense doesn't really need

Houston Gamblers some say Ryan breaking news I am in first place in my Zamboni oh hell yeah dude I'm
in I'm in last but I have zero points only 16 so I have 76.5 points oh yeah that seems like a good
let's see first place in
mine isn't that high so ah it's just the underdog format it makes it so
easy to get invested all right Houston Gamblers taking on the nylons Breakers this is at 9
30 on the west coast Saturday's all about Birmingham so we talked about this last week
both games in Birmingham so maybe you can make a full day of usfl action I wonder if we'll have
some crossover fans uh going on again that makes a lot more sense and that's another thing that
hurt hurt that approach on Sunday was to play one gam
e at the Liberty Bowl on Saturday and
then another on Sunday yeah why not the same day you're gonna get those Memphis fans in there
you might as well have them stick for both and you need to run the games back to pack yeah exactly
that's what I'm saying like that that that's to me what Birmingham because they're smart they're
stupid idiots who don't understand how to put on a [ __ ] promotion well I mean how do you like
them the final four you get one ticket you're there for the entire time
then they won't make
as much money I'm just like oh they're making zero money they clearly I mean honestly you
might save money because then you don't have to open the stadium back to back days yeah that's
well that was what it does I'm telling you these they're losing money when they open most of
these buildings with the exception of you know maybe all the buildings I don't think they're
losing with Birmingham because I believe the city get let them use that for free and same probably
sa
me with Ken uh they're desperate to have people go out there uh so much so they built a Hall of
Fame I mean middle of [ __ ] nowhere in Ohio come on I'm just kidding New Orleans minus five and
a half right not really minus five and a half minus 205 on the money line Houston plus 175 39
is the total as I mentioned uh 1100 is the future for the gamblers no thank you Breakers are plus
550. not particularly interested in that price um and as we mentioned this is this is a home
game for New Orle
ans AKA it's in Birmingham I mean this is an interesting spot because I I
you know on on my my contrarian uh zigzag bearing wants to just take the gamblers uh because you see
uh Bethel Thompson the guy really he laid out for that one first down he he put his team the team
on his back I understand the the instinct to take the points because it's like uh hey you know New
Orleans wasn't running away with that game their offense seems to struggle a bit but I I ended and
the line opened at four
so you've probably missed some value but I still think New Orleans minus
five and a half um I'm out on this Houston team and I saw enough out of the breakers their gutsy
finish to get that cover a lot of people probably thought the game was over when the mallers
returned the uh that punt for a touchdown and breaker said no way we're getting this win and
we're getting this covered that's what I like well that I think if you dive into it yes the breakers
off its line was terrible right absolu
tely terrible the whole game terrible their run game
absolutely not existing but Houston's defense look really bad against uh Michigan I think New Orleans
though you look at the yards they were still able to throw the ball around a lot they had to settle
for field goals I think they correct some of those mistakes I'll lay the five and a half he used to
look like the clear coat worst team in the league to me I think because at least like Pittsburgh's
defense to me was impressive Houston I do
n't know that I was impressed by anything now I know Mark
Thompson didn't end up playing that game and he's like one of the best running backs in this league
kind of a beast yeah uh maybe that would be a difference play this week I I think so I would
assume so but I haven't seen an official report but chalk Hayes in these [ __ ] leagues early and
the biggest when I'm looking at the game tape of myself last week my biggest mistake what did I do
Ryan you're an auto chalk guy and then you yeah
I mean I got I got two emotions four minutes left we
took so we should have took the lead it's a simple handicap I'm gonna buy until we see the basement
and I don't think we've seen the basement for the gamblers yet uh so we'll lean into the breakers
as the chat mentioned earlier mate they they have uh bits of Competency I I think certainly plus
550 for the future price is is pretty steep but here's for what for for New Orleans yeah just
saying like I don't think they're I don't think the
price is reflective of how good of a team
they are but Houston could be really bad so I'm I'm with you guys go sign Kyle Slaughter so
we're staying in Birmingham but it's an awkward amount of time between the games here yes that's
the other thing yeah well they got to make sure that you can get that ticket counts for both if
I read that correct why not make them back to back you know how hot it's gonna be make sure
you bring your Easy Ups look I have a lot of I have a lot of soccer tourney
experiences you
get the easy up you bring the cooler maybe you get a couple parents to do a potluck style meal
in between it's really nice well Ryan yeah easy up you're gonna need it because I don't know
if you've looked at the weather uh possible 70 precipitation for Birmingham football weather
baby let's go that would be great if they canceled because of rain they probably would for lightning
if they've done it before if the burning so if this is true that they'll be open but it looks
li
ke it's gonna it looks like it's going to be uh the 9 A.M game actually looks like where most
of the precipitation my AccuWeather is showing by four o'clock it looks like it should be clean
for kickoff but if you end up pushing it back a little bit well well here's what I would say if
the Birmingham fans are real fans they're going to get there early for the Houston New Orleans
game tailgate the entire time yeah they're gonna they're gonna cook some pigs or whatever they do
down there in Al
abama maybe it's just some possum or something like that you kind of gotta love
the stallions fans dressing up as shark dog and stuff I don't know if you guys saw that I thought
that was pretty fun I I love it embracing because that as uh as we were told it's a Vibe yeah shark
dog isn't it's not a character it's a Vibe so I I embrace other people embracing the vibe of shark
dog but yeah the Memphis showboats and Birmingham playing all the way at 4 pm on the west coast
so there's a full what
would you say like three hours between games like the first game is going
to end at noon 30 and then this one's not starting until four all right that's a lot a lot a lot of
time to drink Memphis here again we said we like the future Plus at Plus 850. plus seven and a
half on the game spread 320 on the money line 44 and a half is the total Birmingham minus 390
which out of principle Spring football the money line that big almost feels dangerous Birmingham
plus 225 to win the championship a
lmost doesn't feel like a horrible deal with how good yeah they
[ __ ] looked um with their quarterback being in their seventh year of skip holtz's chalk works uh
well you know it doesn't work this is completely unrelated to the usfl but I I've fallen down the

to be fans of both can you be a gambler how did and look there the Roughnecks haven't been it's
not like they've been packing that Stadium down there in Houston but uh we'll see is that are
they the only city with two teams I
believe so that's that's wrong that's I mean for many
reasons Brian and I save Spring football by merging the uh no we're going to sit down let's
just put out the solution before anyone asks I don't want a merger let's put out a nice nice

a successful league in the usfl and I want that to keep keep going because I think that's how we
bring real football
Ryan when you have two spring leagues you have zeros well Kobe's right he's
defining capitalism but in football terms you need competition low man wins unfortunately what we've
done is we've allowed a monopoly to exist for too long yeah and so the marketplace is impenetrable
and these leagues will have to merge to have any sort of chance and then also probably sign a
deal with the NFL what do you mean they don't need to compete with the NFL like uh the guy from
from Fox tweeted this out th
ere they already did better than uh the the UFC on ESPN uh if they
can stay at the average they just did this past week yeah so they would they would need to I
just think doing a deal like making it easy for players to move between leagues is beneficial
sure like figuring that out as well sure but just stay in your stay in your own Zone and I think
like what if you like gun to my head 100 percent this there will be one springly in five years
there will be one spring League yeah and I and I
believe that franchise is like the New Jersey
generals will play franchises like the Houston Rockets I'm hoping there'll be three leagues well
and then imagine okay world league back imagine a world where the Houston Roughnecks go head to
head against the Houston Gamblers now that is Springfield let me see the Jets and Giants let's
just retire the gamblers franchise it's a great it's a great look stop it they're way cooler
