We're finally getting a sense of the rescue operation that, as you mentioned, is currently underway on the Botafogo River. Those lights that we were showing you over th couple of hours, it does look like they are police boats, first responder bo that are in the water on this rescue operation, trying to find those people. As you mentioned, sonar has picked up that there are cars in the water and they're trying to rescue people who could still be inside. And as we zoom in on the ship, take a look.
Casey, You can see chunks of the the key bridge that tumbled down toward the wat still on the deck of that shipping container. Pieces of the bridge mangled on top of the boat itsel on top of the ship itself, as they mentioned during the press conference. First responders, authorities have been in touch and the Coast Guard have been in it sounds like, with the crew of the ship. We don't know the latest of everyone who was o But look, you may look at a river like this and say, okay, how significa
nt is the rescue operation as we pan to the right? This gives you a sense of how much of the bridge was lo It was a huge chunk of it. From our vantage point, it looks like the majority of the bridge is go down into the water here. And so first responders, these r really have a lot of ground to c And as you can see there, that appears to be a Coast Guard helicopter also flying just over the water, perhaps looking for anyone who might be down in these inten If you can't get a sense, it is not gent
le conditions on t this morning. It is freezing out here. The wind has been whipping all m So certainly rescuers have their hands full and they're particularly concern for the condition of anyone who could be in the water now hours into this operation. But but, Casey, you can see I can count from my view, maybe eight or ten boats that are part of this rescue ope And that's just from what I can you know, at least a half mile from the bridge lot. They have both sides of the brid locked down the ar
ea, shut down to anyone who is not part of this rescue o because you heard you heard the urgency from both the mayor, as well as those agencies, is that this is still very much an active scene and a rescue operation that is the focus, trying to save people's lives. And that's what we're watching from this vantage point. But but again, Casey, as we're finally getting dayligh it is a shocking to see these pi of the key bridge broken apart and either in the water or sitting broken on top of that sh
ipping containe Yeah, the vessel there. Gabe, I mean, just this is, as you point out, this is our first daylight glimpse of the aftermath of this horrific scene in Baltimore with the Francis Scott Key Bridge collapsed on top of the Dolly container ship bound for Sri Lan Our Juliette Kayyem noted that there would have been a harbor pilots and specifically trained to navigate these waters on boar this ship. Underscoring, again, officials tell us there's no ind of terrorism. Chief Wallace of the Ba
ltimore C Police Department, not Baltimore I misspoke earlier. The Baltimore City Police Department telling us the efforts right now are on the search and rescue as really are racing against time to try to get anyone impact by this out of water. That is so cold. Our Derek Van Dam told us that, you know, human survivability is only around 3 hours or so in That is the temperature, the 48 degree temperature that we understand that water to Again, this unfolding at 1:27 a. We've been showing you the
moment of impact. Now we're able to show you the I mean, the Baltimore mayor is absolutely right. This is this is out of an action movie that twisted metal on top of that ship. As we see those those rescue boa You know, I just as someone who with a lot of personal ties to Baltimore as well, I mean, it just my heart goes out to all of the families that are impacted, affected here Let's get to our Kevin LIPTAK is at the White Hou We understand that the president of the United States actively moni
toring this situati Kevin, what can you tell us? Yeah, certainly White House officials like the rest of the c absorbing the totality of the de as the sun comes out today. And we are hearing from White House officials who do say they're closely monitoring this incident. And I think the most important t that we've heard from the White this morning is telling us that there's no indication of any nefarious intent, you know, terrorism or otherwise And we obviously heard that from the local officials
as well But certainly as we start to piece together what exactly happened here, that it seems to be off the table as federal law enforcement begins to engage. We are hearing from a White Hous official that there's no indicat of nefarious intent. What we have also heard from the White House is that the Coast Guard is sort of taking the lead in terms of the federal response at the m in terms of the search and rescu for those who remain unknown unaccounted for as part of this. And obviously, White
House officials are in touch with officials on the ground the And you heard a number of offici in that press conference just now saying that they had sp to the transfer station. Secretary Prudent Ridge, we know that he spoke to the gov Wes Moore. He spoke to the Baltimore mayor, Brandon Scott. And now we should say President Biden himself was scheduled to travel today on a campaign tr to North Carolina. We haven't gotten word that that trip is canceled as of but certainly it gives you a sense of
the balance that any incumbent president running for reelection and will have to strike when we have this sort of incide this sort of tragedy unfolding that he will certainly want to keep an eye on But as of now, a White House official saying they're very closely monitoring what's happening there in Baltim Yeah. All right. Our Kevin LIPTAK for us at the White House. Kevin, thank you very much. Let me bring in briefly Andy McCabe as we approach the top of the hour. Andy, we did hear from officia
ls saying very clearly that at this point they have no indication that this was terrorism. What do you make of officials being able to make that claim at this point? Also knowing, of course, the FBI is on the scene and involved in this investigati Well, I think that makes a lot o I mean, they're basing that no doubt on the fact that there's a dearth of or an a intelligence or information that would point in that directi Now, you know, you have to, of course, always caveat that with we're at the
very beginning of this effort, as the officials there in the press conference indicate You know, 99% of their focus right now, it's not 100% is on rescue and recovery, like identifying victims and pulling as many of those fol out of the water as quickly as they possibly can. So you don't really know where things are going to go after after we get through this phase and they make more substantial c with the individuals on the vess that are actually able to sit do and start asking some questions a
bout how this whole thing happe You know, as we've said, as we've discussed earlier this morning, Casey, it's you know, it's entirely more likely that there are mechanical failur mistakes, incompetence, failure of training, things like that. Human error that were behind thi Those those chances are all far more likely than intentionality, some sort of sabotage or terrori And I think it's good that we're hearing from official that they're considering that. But at this point, they have no indicatio
n that that's the case here. I'm sure if we ask them the follow up question, they would probably also say the they have a long way to go before they have a solid underst of exactly what led to this horrible event.

It's sadly not a rescue mission anymore. People don't survive under water for hours. If you haven't found anyone in the first couple of minutes, then there's sadly nobody left alive.

@commentatorxyz5514

Never imagined that the toll cameras on the bridge could be useful to count drowned cars.

@wil_mil_man

This is a sad day here in Baltimore! My prayers 🙏 go out to the families as well! This was absolutely mind boggling to wake up to this morning! To all the families directly involved I pray your strength to get through this awful tragedy! Peace 🕊️

@TishaHayes

Unfortunately the death toll is probably greater than seven. (former rescue/recovery diver here). If you are in a car on the bottom then it is a recovery at this point. They can call it a 'rescue' but that is for the (cold) comfort to families. The reality is that there is nobody left alive under water.

@rodonis88

This reporter is a prime example of why I hate modern news! Attempting to search big words and framing every sentence to try and make an ‘impact’ of the viewer. Just report the FACTS it’s not that hard

@BePatient888

It's not a rescue operation now. It's a body recovery operation. They're gone. The story is there were 2 survivors, and (thus far) 7 missing/dead.

@Greenpoloboy3

7 are lost. RIP to them!! As sad as this is, this would have been far worse in daylight

@andyroubik5760

The reporter said people could last 3 hours in that water! No way. The death toll will rise unfortunately

@johnbraun1607

There's no one alive in their car if it's underwater... Just nonsense comment

@ohwell94

Holy smokes! The entire bridge goes down like matchsticks but the ship barely looks touched

@user-hu7cx9rq4p

The ship lost power by the looks of it from the smoke and all the lights going out just before it hit. There were 2 pilots onboard. The only question is why 3 or 4 tugboats were not with the ship till it passed the bridge. They are the backup safety measure.

@jamesesdaile4696

Tragic, let’s be real 5 min after the collapse for anyone in the water it’s a body recovery

@ella17734

For those poor people who were on that bridge and went into the water, that would have been a terrifying and painful way to die. So sorry that happened to them. RIP

@AonlineRedneck

Many of the newer bridges have deflectors on the base of the supports, not sure if it would make a difference here but wow!

@gasovensforqcult

That skipper is effed for life

@ly776

How this happened on a clear night with a pilot on board in such a busy harbor is incomprehensible. The only fortunate thing is when this happened , early in the morning , as the death toll would have been some much worse at other times of day. Hoping that there are some miraculous rescues.

@KF5o

I’m so sorry this looks horrific, sending love from the UK to you all, stay strong cousins 🇬🇧❤️🇺🇸

@Jenna08848

185 foot drop into 50 feet of water. This is a recovery operation at this point. Power loss on the ship is a huge part of the investigation. Sucks to be the ship captain with this on their head. Bigger question was why there not pilot tugs to make sure the boat was clear of bridge before allowing it to proceed under its own power. A push off the berth really is not enough to insure safe exit to sea.

@StevenR_Fishing

Why do these headlines keep reading like the bridge just randomly collapsed? It was destroyed by a cargo ship…

@a-dub4323

Man I know the bridge is old and the ship weights a lot, but dang it came down like it was made of Lego
