⁴ᴷ⁶⁰ Walking NYC (Narrated) : The "Real" Little Italy (Arthur Ave) to Fordham Rd & Jerome Ave, Bronx

Google Maps Route: https://goo.gl/maps/EFmHkimZkZwnJJsj7 I walk through the "Real" Little Italy on Arthur Avenue in Belmont, Bronx to Fordham Road. At Fordham Road I walk west to the Jerome Avenue (4) Subway Station. CORRECTION: 13:32 is actually Theodore Roosevelt High School. The main campus of Fordham University is on my right. From Wikipedia: "Arthur Avenue is a street in the Belmont neighborhood of the Bronx, New York City, which serves as the center of the Bronx's "Little Italy". Although the historical and commercial center of Little Italy is Arthur Avenue itself, the area stretches across East 187th Street from Arthur Avenue to Beaumont Avenue, and is similarly lined with delis, bakeries, cafes and various Italian merchants. The Bronx's Little Italy has an Italian immigrant heritage that dates back to the 1850s. Arthur Avenue and Morris Park are viewed as the Bronx's primary Italian American communities. Other Italian American communities in the Bronx are the middle and upper class neighborhoods of Schuylerville and Country Club. The avenue itself is named for former U.S. president Chester A. Arthur. Fordham Road is a major thoroughfare in the Bronx borough of New York City that runs east-west from the Harlem River to Bronx Park. Fordham Road houses the borough's largest and most diverse shopping district. It geographically separates the North Bronx from the South Bronx. This street runs through the neighborhood of University Heights, divides Fordham from Fordham-Bedford and finally runs along the northern border of Belmont. It begins at its eastern point as a continuation of Pelham Parkway and at its western point continues over the University Heights Bridge into Manhattan, where it runs as West 207th Street. It is a two-way, four-lane road. East of Webster Avenue Fordham Road runs concurrent with U.S. Route 1 from Webster Avenue to Boston Road. Fordham Road is divided into East Fordham Road and West Fordham Road by Jerome Avenue following after the Manhattan grid, with address numbers for both the East Fordham Road and West Fordham Road increasing away from Jerome Avenue. Fordham Road is under the management of the Fordham Road Business Improvement District, a non-profit organization under contract with the City of New York. The BID maintains, develops, and markets the merchants along Fordham Road and hosts many community events throughout the year." hello everyone today is june 6 2019. i am in the belmont section of the bronx right now in front of a christopher columbus statue and today i'll be walking arthur avenue to fordham road and taking fordham road to jerome avenue so i was just at the d arya murphy triangle i hope i'm saying that correctly but right here is the start of the little italy of the bronx this area is commonly referred to as the um real little italy when compared to the little italy of manhattan by the locals even though
i'll be walking up one street today on arthur avenue little italy in the bronx actually goes all the way to beymont avenue and the area around 187th street has a lot of italian businesses over the recent years many other ethnicities have moved into the area such as the hispanics and albanians so you'll see a lot of other different restaurants by those ethnicities as well but predominantly the businesses on this street are italian here's a mexican restaurant the estralita pablano number three a l
ittle italy cigar store there's the san gennaro ristorante across the street there's dominic's restaurant it's a very famous restaurant in the area known to have having no menus and ordering off waiter suggestions or whatever you can think up of enzo's of arthur avenue is across the street here's the arthur avenue retail market this market houses many different businesses such as uh italian ices grocery um like meat stores and cheese here's madonia bakery celebrating a hundred years many of thes
e businesses have been here for many generations a pastry shop and cafe across the street i bet you there's delicious cannoli there for those who don't know cannoli is a fried flower i believe with cream inside and it's delicious there's the fusion italian restaurant lounge across the street so i forgot to mention that arthur avenue is named after chester a arthur who was the president of the united states back in the day right now it is seven o'clock p.m with mostly cloudy skies the sunset shou
ld be happening very soon many of the businesses are closed now because they don't get too many customers throughout the evenings here's a restaurant that's been here 40 years full moon pizza so there's a big tradition of families here who have owned restaurants for long amounts of time here's the other main street of little italy which is 187th street you can see all the italian decorations hung over the street this is the luna cafe there's ann and tony's restaurant five generations owned wonde
rful and here is tino's catering you can get many many different things here rolls chicken farm pastas meats and this seems to be a playground in little italy since it's the evening most of the children are off from school it's also the summertime so many of them don't even have school right now this is the chicharron park so as soon as i passed 187th street the amount of italian businesses while the density of them starts to decline but it's still present all the way up to fordham road here the
re are no businesses it's just a bunch of residences in terms of transportation the bronx little italy is a little bit challenging to get to by public transportation because the buses and the subways don't exactly leave you off at the entrance to little italy in order to get here i took the d train to east tremont avenue and then i took the bus over to third avenue yeah third avenue and 180th street and then walked northward so it's a two-fair trip to get here here's muggs's clinton hall very ni
ce artwork on the exterior happy hour till seven well happy hour is done now because it's past seven there's tony and tina's pizzeria across the street welcoming students because as we're about to see soon once i get to fordham road is fordham university which is a large university in the area so here's sammy's 2500 grocery company looks like it's selling a lot of spanish products so i've made it to fordham road fordham road is the northernmost boundary of belmont little italy is located within
belmont but the neighborhood of belmont as a whole and company encompasses a huger area than little italy if that makes any sense so now this street is wow that's a really dangerous left turn by that blue toyota it should wait for the traffic to clear before trying to make an aggressive left turn like that but hey it's new york city but fordham road is a very very large street with a lot of traffic it's also a very commercial and shopping district as we'll see when i walk further west basically
it's the biggest shopping street in the borough and pretty much all the bronx come to fordham road to do shopping all right guy in a fixie doing wheelies that's awesome here's the golf gas station fordham road is the dividing street between the north and the south bronx there's many bus services that use fordham road such as the bx-9 bx12 17 and 22. there's also a metro north passenger rail stop here as well as two subway lines that stop on fordham road well i should say three subway lines becau
se one subway station is on the b and d trains on the grand concourse and then the other one is the 4 train on jerome avenue which is a short distance away from the grand concourse fordham road station so as i walk westward on fordham road the demographics start to change dramatically you'll see more african-americans and more of a younger crowd because of the university here someone's doing a garage sale tomorrow by the time this video is up you'll probably have missed it very nice red car to t
urn in front of me when i have the right of way so across the street from me is one of fordham university's buildings but the main campus is actually on the right of me or to my right i should say i'm pointing the camera there now here there's a bus station called the i mean a bus stop served by the w 60. the w stands for the b line system used by westchester county which is not part of new york city it's actually the next county north of the bronx what many of the county buses do is they'll onl
y do pickups within new york city but they won't do drop-offs so make sure if you're using a county bus to check and see if it will drop you off within new york city before you get on or pay they do you they do use the same payment method as the subway and bus system here which is metro park here's a fordham university building this building on washington avenue and i believe that's third avenue on the other side is really unique in this architecture kind of looks like a step step stairs so the
traffic can get pretty bad here during peak hours but now since it's getting a little bit later in the evening it's not so bad so now that i am about to pass by third avenue i do want to mention that i did a walking video of third avenue in its entirety in the bronx from fordham road all the way to manhattan if you'd like to check that out it'll be in the upper right corner but here's the main entrance for fordham university's campus at third avenue and fordham road it's a really nice campus no
way you do need a student id in order to enter this is the fordham road metro north station the passenger rail service for the region i'm like quick very quick metro north the station's actually called fordham so i'm about to pass by webster avenue and fordham road this is um the start of the big big commercial area of the bronx one of the biggest shopping streets on the bronx if not the biggest you have everything from macy's backstage to best buy burlington kennedy's chicken and burgers it's v
ery very lively here so i'm letting this westchester county bus make its turn but i want to get around it because there won't be enough time to cross the street later on so here's webster avenue and decatur avenue i'm going to cross the street to avoid copyrighted sound and youtube flagging my video so if you're asking me why i'm crossing the street that's the reason i still may have to mute the video if youtube detects it for a content id it's out of my control so you can see a lot of different
businesses here like tattoo parlors pawn shops jewelry amazing deals as well as street vendors selling produce and groceries it is a little bit hilly here but that's the feature of fordham road the bronx is known as a hilly borough here's gamestop mcdonald's and old navy is to my left i am using a little bit of muscle here to walk up these streets it's not that easy of a walk you really want to experience new york city for what it is in reality and how locals see it come to fordham road in the
bronx and you won't be disappointed this is raw new york city looks like the sun is trying to shine through those clouds it's making for a very beautiful atmosphere so there's perfumes here lots of other different shoe stores and authorized dealers even though the street's kind of crowded here you can still manage to manage to make your way around and there's more music playing i may have to mute it i don't think it will be an issue though and you can see the shopping district extends to the oth
er side of the street with planet fitness across the street which is a gym and exercise facility there's a lot of places you can buy jeans and other clothing it just amazes me how many different languages you can hear just walking through the streets of new york you can hear english i just heard spanish back there different dialects there's the gap factory store across the street a very big store here's modell's the sporting goods store there's many more clothing stores across the street ford ac
tion dr jays ladies chase is a bank one of the biggest banks in new york city is chase i even saw one back on arthur avenue but there's also a bank of america here on this corner it's also very common to see the street vendors here doing ices and also sliced mango it's very delicious sometimes they even flavor the mango with different spices here's a common sight you see in the bronx a bunch of cars who can't wait their turn in the correct lane stalling the bus from making straight going straigh
t and that bus is completely packed so how many people does that delay if you think about a car it can hold what maybe six people max if you really cram it in and then how many people does a bus carry so right now i'm about to cross over into the grand concourse this is a major north and south through street through the bronx it cuts through many of the bronx's neighborhoods and it's also home to the bnd train station right here the fordham road station but i won't be going there today i'll be g
oing to the jerome avenue station which is the 4 train not only does the subway travel along the grand concourse there are at least two bus lines that travel through the grand concourse as well these people are selling flavored ice it's very delicious the city has been trying to make the grand concourse safer by installing bicycle lanes and pedestrian islands it's known for speeding and a lot of traffic here's a poem all roads lead to fordham if you like to read it you can pause the video but if
any of you don't know action kid likes to wait uh talking crosswalk actually announces the name of the street it says now crossing grand grand concourse many of the other crossing um talking crosswalk uh features they'll just play audible sound with that sounds like a laser almost for quick drumming there used to be one on 23rd street too that will announce you're crossing 5th avenue but that one's been replaced by the drumming sound okay i'm going to make a walk for it so as you can see the sh
opping district absolutely continues even west of the grand concourse here's a cheese slice pizza place for one dollar they're very common within the city the price you see is the price you paid so it looks like sunset is just about to hit in the bronx wow this is very crazy even though i have right of way i was afraid to cross the street there because that driver was just accelerating very quickly towards the crosswalk better to be safe than sorry in new york just like here i could have made it
walking across the street too but the lights just about to change [Music] that's a very interesting looking car looks like this driver is trying to park the car [Music] so now that i'm almost at the fordham road station for the number four train i could continue walking on fordham road towards manhattan over the university heights bridge after university heights it becomes 207th street a very talented musician here well now that i'm here at the fordham road station i hope you enjoy this video t
hrough the neighborhood of belmont and also fordham road and little italy give this video a like thumbs up subscribe if you haven't already ring that bell icon if you get to get notified and i'll catch you all soon bye [Music] you

What a great way to spend a summer night walking around NYC whilst sat at home in England....Thank you..😁😁👍

@nildaferrer

Loved walking down memory lane. I am from Arthur Avenue. I walked through those streets when I was a child with my mother. Looking at it now is bittersweet as my mom is no longer in a position to walk due to her health and a lot of the businesses have changed. It's been years since I been to Fordham Road.

@annib9307

The Great street. Loved little Italy I worked on Fordham come through here Arthur Ave to home on Harrison. My husband enjoyed Italian icees and we enjoyed pizza slices, pies to bring home on paydays. In our era we were in our early twenties. Thanks for the history tour, enjoyed revisiting been since 1989

@vickihollenbeck7613

I love walking the streets with you and listening to where we are😃💝💝💝💝. Keep them coming!!!

@texman8150

Great video as usual. I learned about the food chain on Arthur Avenue in 1950 at the age of 5. A butcher shop my mother shopped at had a baby lamb tied up by the front door. The butcher would let me feed it from a milk bottle. I thought it was a pet. After a few weeks no lamb. I asked where it was? Butcher pointed to meat showcase!

@me-in-MPLS

Another amazing video Actionkid. Narration is so much fun and it is so technically smooth and easy to watch. I really enjoy seeing all of these places you take us to in NYC. Have a great weekend. Cheers from Minneapolis.

@edengoldenblatt3997

@nonoyobeezewax9527

(1:58) The silver minivan backing up into a parking space reminded me of a scene from "A Bronx Tale" where Sunny is talking in the car to Colegio. The whole time he's driving backwards all the way down the street. The door test! LOL.
