Westerners try Indonesian food from BLOK M, Jakarta (Gultik, Jasuke, Sate Taichan)

Today a group of westerners visit Jakarta to try Indonesian street food from Blok M! Our guests get to try a variety of traditional Indonesian street foods—Jasuke, Gultik, and sate Taichan—handpicked by the footballers from RCD Espanyol. From the comforting blend of Jasuke (sweet corn, milk, & cheese) to the spicy kick of Gultik (Indonesian Curry) and the tantalizing Sate Taichan (spicy grilled chicken skewers), our participants get to experience the rich tapestry of Indonesian street food. Our guests share their thoughts and reactions, providing an honest and unfiltered look at their first-time experience with these lesser-known to the outside world, delicacies. This video captures the genuine excitement, surprise, and enjoyment of our guests as they explore the diverse and flavorful world of Indonesian food, all curated by the Espanyol footballers! Thanks to: George Benson (GBFC) Georgie Day Maya Januarsa (pronounced Mey-Uh) Nara (Tellwe on IG) For helping us review Indonesian food!

today we're in Jakarta where we have rcd espanol footballers going out to the Block M region to find street food for our guests so on the show today we have George and Georgie as well as Maya and Nara and now it's time for our guests to close their eyes oh this is my favorite part. get so excited jasuke. you may open your eyes what the bloody hell is this oh my God oh my God I thought I honestly was expecting some rice and some like some delicates asian style fish, but where did you get this? fr
om Jakarta. yeah jasuke is abbreviation of jagung susu keju which literally means corn with milk and cheese it is a snack popular in Jakarta and you can find it sold in food courts on the street have you guys seen anything like this before? um yes but just like not with the name and I didn't try it. no, I've never seen anything like that I've seen corn. great. I've seen cheese. I think cheese. wait, what's all this liquid? Is it milk? tell me it's not milk Lawrence, I don't think I've ever desir
ed my eyes to stay closed as much as I do right now I know. look my eyes that's actually oddly good. I didn't think I was going to like that but that's actually quite good. I'm going check your temperature I don't mind it I don't mind it it's like creamy sweet corny it's like a sweet corn puree that's just not been pureed I'm sorry, I'm not convinced I'm not sold. I'm not interested in this whatsoever okay I wouldn't order it and I would not seek it out but I don't mind it I think it I think i
t's okay it's just like I love a good corn on the cob and I do love sweet corn and I probably love cheese but you start adding all of these things into some concoction in a plastic cup and I'm just over it I'm so over it it's sweet too I think it's very creative. someone was like, I like sweet corn I like cheese. I want a little bit sweet. this is creative if you're a 2-year-old child like I give you the props if you're two and you come up with this you know what my sister would love this. this
is like all my sister's favorite things in a plastic cup so guys what for rating out of 10 for jasuke Indonesia I love you but I've got to give that like a four I was going to say the same thing I've got to give it a two. sorry it's revolting okay 4.5. 4.5 wow same as Maya and Maya and Nara. for this dish? yeah they give it a four out of 10 yeah. God very Denak start to this episode yeah all right guys enak or Denak? Denak. it's more the Denak so now we have Blok M favorite Sate Tai Chan hello s
ir, can I order satay taican? it's good? yeah Satay taiChan is unique compared to other Indonesian satays because there's no sauce and instead focuses on the flavors of a seasoned meat there is also this spicy sambal which you can eat with the satay can I get the spicy sambal too? satay taican. you may open your eyes satay taican. oh now it's okay this looks a bit more at my street. yeah let's got a bit of it. we have some spice on there Laurence yes we've got some sambal sauce. we also got some
ricecake and we've got a special type of satay. this is the one they cook in banana leaf right? the rice, they like steam it in there. yeah exactly rice cake. should we, can we eat it? yes you may you may eat it no can can I ask, what's different to this sambal compared to other sauces which you've tried? peanut sauce. usually it has peanut sauce. yes that's correct satay taican has no peanut sauce I'm excited cuz I've never tried like these I don't even know what that is. like rice? you've nev
er tried rice cake? usually it's like it's covered in peanut sauce so I don't get it I'm too scared contamination. yeah it's just stick your eyes that's it yeah but usually when they're like selling it on the streets it's like cuz I've got the nut allergy I'm too scared that they're going to like cross-contaminate something so I just avoid it so you can't eat peanuts whatsoever? no. It must suck living in Indonesia. tell me about it and also this not it's not got any flavor on it right? like som
etimes they marinate this in like ketchup and tiny bit of flavor I'm trying to fish up a piece of the ricecake. nothing on that oh it feels like so sticky it feels like someone's got prit stick and just like gone all over it I really like that how spicy is the spicy? I think you can cope I can cope with them yeah I think it's pretty spicy. this is actually really nice and it it feels so odd it's like someone super glued the outside of a vegetable it's good it's like sorry you can taste like the
lemongrassy it's more like lime Leaf or lemongrass than a normal sambal but you know what I think I'm handling very well so far normally I die instantly. all right guys rating outof 10 for a satay taichan 10 10 10 yeah I love it wow 10 oh I like this a lot I think this is probably about a 9.5 for me. I'd eat this. I'm going to give it a nine enak or denak? enak. one more portion boss spicy? yeah. very tasty gultik. you may open your eyes. Gultik is an Indonesian type of Curry commonly found in b
lok M Jakarta oh yeah I said I wanted some soup. yeah you got soup. we got the soup now gultik like gold. like a espanol player scoring a goal tick Gula like sugar. yes something like sugar. yes like like babi guling yeah like babi guling beef. yes. it's soupy. yes and I see some red flakes which means spicy is it pork or is it beef no it's not pork. beef? it's a beef like if I had my eyes closed I would be like Indian and Vietnamese that's funny because I'm going to say it reminds me of home bu
t it looks like a stew? like but not like.. the more of a stew, yes but it's not the correct definition so it's not a stew and it's not a soup it's not a curry. is it a curry? it is a sort of Curry. okay right a curry yeah gulai means curry in Indonesian. okay what's the best way to do it do you can get a bit of rice and a bit of rice cracker? this is where we need a proper etiquette from two British people what is a proper etiquette to eat gulai you reckon? I reckon with your hands. yeah like t
he scoopo that's exactly how you do it. is it? stop it. so what, you do this? yeah all right well we got to do then we? is it actually? I'm going to get this here but personally I want to taste the soup first so I'm going to do that can you hear that? crackers crack crack amazing. oh I like that that bit was good I like that a lot do you yeah that's yummy it's like a curry dish traditional from Block M in Jakarta. yeah that's what you're having right now. I like it. Block M. you don't know Block
M? I just arrived in jakarta this morning. you know block M right? this really famous in oh my God we get it Laurence, just go get for your KTP. we get it it's got the same similar flavors as the rendang, the spices. yes, very similar to rendang my word, yeah this is like a soupy rendang. should we.. pick.. I could eat all of this Delicious. tender. I don't know I like it I like it this is really good. I actually love it. I'm surprised how you guys eat it you don't have it with rice? oh I forgo
t about the rice honestly food the I actually really like it I'm going to finish the meat so gultik actually comes from the name gulai. you guys know gulai is? nope. curry can you speak Indonesian language? for sure Laurence, why do they make them different colors? why do they make them different colors I have no idea. just separate them maybe. for fun. oh can I have another question? why do they multicolor the chickens? you know the chicks, you see little chicks running around and there's like
a pink one and a green one for the elementary school. for fun? yeah. for fun. they color chickens for fun. don't you wish you did that in school? welcome to Indonesia wow Laurence, I'm Blown Away mate. yeah this is very yummy. completely Natalie so guys what's your rating out of 10 for Gultik from Block M in Jakarta? right Laurence, I honestly believe that might be my favorite dish ever on the show no way. personally there's something about the flavors in that that just uh kind of tickled me a l
ittle bit. a lot actually. this is fantastic I'm giving this a 10 out of 10 it's a perfect dish wow 10 out of 10 for gultik wow I really really enjoyed that a lot so did you. yeah. mine's emptier than yours. George you said in the previous episode well many episodes back your favorite dish in the world is actually an Indian curry yeah this is the Indonesian styled Indian curry. wow and counterpart a 10 out of 10 for gultik. yeah there's yeah there's method in that Madness it really is fantastic.
I wouldn't say necessarily I consider it a curry because it's more soup textury. but if this is how they want to make the gultik in Block M then they've nailed that for me. top draw what's your rating out of 10? I love that a lot. it wouldn't be a 10 out of 10 strong eight and a half, nine. eight and a half, okay nine or eight and a half yeah. which one? uh eight and a half. eight and a half eight and a half and a 10 out of 10. 10 from me . 10? like a nine. and now that our guests have tried th
ree dishes of the Espanol players selected for them I decided to bring an additional traditional cake dessert from Medan in North sumatra bika ambon. you may open your eyes what is this? I don't know if that's sweet or savory. yeah it looks like it is sweet this looks like um what's it called? there's martabak? it does actually yeah. I mean like for white people a crumpet it's spongy. it's what do you think it is do you think it's a cake or do you think it's something else? this is like a spongy
honeycomb and honeycomb is one of my favorite food things in the world actually looks like a crumpet yes it does look like a crumpet. you know what that needs a fat thing on top that. okay I'm going to try it it looks like inside like a a strained orange or a pamelo. yeah look at that is so crumpy isn't it? that is crumpy. you like? look at it. honestly put that in a toaster and I'm staying here forever it reminds me of mochi. you know the texture. yeah the texture and I love this type of textu
re if Crumpet and martabak had a baby that is what it is there we go. yeah so me touching it was just the foreplay but this is actually been through the walls excellente. I wonder if you guys can guess what is inside like somebody sprayed some perfume, I don't know. you know when you're like spraying it and some of it gets in and then you just lick your arm and so it's got like a synthetic taste to it. is that what you're saying? guess a floral sort of taste floral that's true. flowers. yeah th
ere's no flowers in there oh well so should I tell you? wait wait just give us a hint okay one is a type of flour. we just said flour. corn? no. okay okay you said flour but it's a type of flower. lavender? do you know any types of flower? no I don't get flowers. I mean no like flour like talk that's why. isn't there corn flour but there's not in this? okay like flour like white tapioca flour. oh okay that's the texture yeah and the last one is coconut milk. that was so easy. it does taste like
it that was the aftertaste. so you described coconut milk as like a this is one of the oldest Indonesian cakes from the city called Medan have you heard of Medan? mhm. where is it? in Indonesia. Northwest of Indonesia where is that? I hate this class. we're going to have to revoke. he's going to make us look stupid on this show what's the next letter Sumatra. yes North Sumatra. guys what's your rating out of 10 for bika ambon? it's a I'll give it like an eight. I was going to yeah I was I'll giv
e it a 7.5 seven seven out of 10? eight? eight out of 10. yeah strong wow amazing so now that you've tried all four dishes let's recap on the best dish of the day. gultik what was it called? satay taichan in last place we have jasuke scoring 3.6 out of 10. in third place we have bika ambon with 7.6 second place gultik with a crazy high 9.4 out of 10. and in first place satay Taichan scoring 9.6 out of 10. I think the Espanol players did really well and I think a move to Barcelona is on the card
soon you can't say that that's a good one though. that's a good one. thanks Laurence. and yeah see you guys back in Bali thank you bye. I'll do that again. that's really fun. yeah? yeah I mean I love food so that was really good. the best Indonesian food exactly full trust in your to choose the best Indonesian food just like with jasuke the sweet one. no you can keep that one where you found it it's plastic cup. you may keep your eyes closed to that

@bangsuha_

respectfully, you’re one of the few foreigners that actually put effort into indonesian content. the others would just try to grab indonesia’s attention just for the quick exposure, effortlessly doing nothing. love the contents. you truly bridge this country to the other side of the globe, culinarily.

@bambangsuprojo9804

Bang Laurence terimakasih loh sudah memperkenalkan kuliner Indonesia ke teman-teman anda,ehhh...tau nggak Georgie mirip artis Indonesia, Agnes Monica 💪💪💪🙏🙏 semangat bang

@audiaeriana8097

Gulai or curry in Indonesia is depends on the maker. Some people love if the broth is thick, and some people love if the broth is soupy/light. It is based on how many coconut milk you use, not the water. So, sometimes foreigner can be confused about Indonesia Curry because it is so different between one and another although it is the same dish. 😅 Basically, gulai/curry in Indonesia has special ingredient which is coconut milk. And, you are right when you say Gultik taste like soupy rendang because rendang is made first as gulai, plus adding shredded coconut, then let the broth gone/dry. And become Rendang.

@nurmanugraha6522

Gultik itu sebenarnya singkatan dari Gulai Itik. Itik nama lain dari bebek. Jd daging yg digunakan di gultik adalah daging bebek. 😁
