What will Andrew Berry's draft strategy be to improve the Cleveland Browns roster?

The Cleveland Browns are not scheduled to take part in the 2024 NFL draft until the No. 54 overall pick, but that doesn't mean Andrew Berry isn't busy on the phone cooking up some potential deals. The Browns do not have a first-round pick because of the Deshaun Watson trade with the Houston Texans. They only have five draft picks in total. Draft-day trades seem unlikely for the Browns given their lack of draft picks to work with, but they could be willing to deal if the second round breaks their way. A handful of players could drop into the second round, which could lead to the Browns brass packaging their second-round pick with another selection to move up. all right so the draft is what three uh three weeks from tomorrow three weeks from tomorrow is it three not four it's the 25th yeah right you're right three weeks from Tomorrow the Browns do not have a first round pick again this year when was the last time the Browns had a first- round pick it's been Greg Newsome which was what year 20 was it three four years ago three years ago no 20 they yeah I mean they haven't had a lot of first run picks because obviously they they've traded this is the la
st of the three for Watson they also traded two first round picks for Odell Beckham I think it was what five out of six years that they won have a first round pick or five out of seven um so finally they they'll in theory at least have a first- round pick in 2025 their first pick this year is at 54 you know Mike you're not used to it and you know but for years as G of course and I know like we would be talking Brown's draft basically from mid November to the draft daily I mean that was the bigge
st conversation and for the last few few years the draft has mostly been off the radar which is a good thing by the way oh yeah means the Browns are competent and not near the top of the draft which is a good thing for years how many times do we hear the draft is the brown Super Bowl it's I mean especially when we needed a quarterback that those years were like even even when we tried to get him like we would we would be in contention for a quarterback literally every single year yeah yeah I mea
n every year you were looking at a quarterback and obviously that hasn't been the case the last bunch of years but the draft has been off the radar a because the Browns have been better and B because they haven't had a lot of first round picks of late and that continues again this year so it's hard to get too excited you know you look at the mock drafts and I I like anybody else will look at a mock draft but the Browns don't pick to the 50s so trying to figure out who the hell they're going to d
raft at 54 or whatever it is field8 put out his two- round mock this morning yeah and had them taking Trey Benson the running back the first running back off the board in the second round feels weird cuz they just signed Foreman as well but also I don't think anything at this point would surprise me and it kind of drives it would not surprise me if they drafted a running back I wouldn't think I I I'd be less surprised if they took other things but let's face the reality you know Nick chub's comi
ng off injury all the other guys can be gone after this year yeah every other running back on their Roost I even chub in theory but like all their other guys I mean Jerome Ford's got what two years left on this deal last was the second year so had two years Ian they didn't pay those other guys any significant deals like those guys if they draft a running back and this guy's the next stud running back okay they may be cutting Forman or whoever I mean I I don't think Foreman's getting any G probab
ly not any guaranteed money I'm just surp I mean I'm not surprised by anything at this point because I think anything's on the table and if I had to tell you right now as of April it's the April 3rd at 12:27 p.m. what I'm most confident the Browns will do it's trade back I don't know why you'd be confident about that I'm not I'm saying that's what I feel most confident in but that's like a level level three out of 10 I don't know why they would do that I mean they don't like it's not a great dra
ft in theory oh it's a great Draft when it comes to certain positions wide receiver why would trade down like yeah I would they should be trading up I you I think you Al I don't know they can't trade up they don't have a lot of picks this year and you don't want to give up your first rounder next year well they got some picks and and I don't look if it takes if they come out of this draft with one person I'd be fine with it package six and seventh they ain't going the team they're not those aren
't going to move you you can't package a two a six and a seven no no I'm I'm thinking about getting up higher in the second round that's that's where I I'm all for I'm not saying I want them I don't think there's any way they can get a first round pick without giving up a first round pick in the future and I just don't think they're going to do that oh no no no no they're not going I I'm with McNuggets for me I think you know I was talking about this on Ultimate Browns um I think now there's mor
e of a chance for them either to trade up or trade down like I'm convinced they will do some sort of trade because the way this draft is going to fall I mean it's going to be interesting and I'm I like this draft because it it always works out this way if you got a really good deep position group like usually it's defensive lineman there's usually a run on them because some guy that somebody has on the board is really excited about him and this year it's receiver what the Browns need and then th
ere's 10 there's there's five or six quarterbacks that are that got either late first early second well that's good for and that's good for me too I love that JJ mcarthy pennick B Nicks all of them like I like that so now that means some receivers are going to fall some POS some right but they're not the good ones are not fall on the 54 but there's there's there's enough good ones yeah oh yeah one or two should be there you could get you three four like just like even you look at Troy Franklin s
omebody just asked me I like is aier get out of uh South Carolina I like a lot I like Troy Franklin um I like lag coni Mak he's gone there's no way he's there at 54 hey he just ran a 44 something I like that's making his stock go up they know way he's there and I like Xavier Le get at that position I like him too there's and we a even talked about the two receivers the two neighbors and and and and um har well Thomas Brian Thomas Thomas these dudes are monsters then you got a Donis Mitchell then
you still got the the other kid that ran a a 42 or whatever his name worthy we didn't name we even talked about Harrison you see how this worked and D he got piol piol and D will any of those guys get to 54 well so just if you look and the further you go if the if the Browns take the ninth wide receiver in the draft well it's less and less likely that guy's going to pan out well just just let's play the number this game real quick you know there's going to be at least four quarterbacks in the f
irst round at least four by 54 you assume penck and bonick go too yeah so six of the first 54 picks your quarterbacks doesn't affect the Browns Bo yeah of the names that g just mentioned Harrison Jr definitely gone yep neighbors neb gone Thomas Gone adun Gone those four could all be top 15 picks yeah prob gone I I agree makoni gone we're at we're at eight now yeah this receiver draft and I've seen guys who I trust like d Brugler in particular tweeted this out he goes the top three the top three
4 through 16 if you want to have them in any order I'm kinding of fine with that right but they're not all going to pan out but I'm just saying dep and what makes me nervous is the Browns have no track of pick no track record the right guys but if you're telling me a guy like d buer who studies this way more than any of us do says between 4 and 16 it's a crap shoot I like all these guys it's personal preference F the Browns are going to get it right I have a hard time beli that won't have at lea
st a shot at a guy who a lot of people like that's not going to be an absurd reach at that point Keon Coleman Coleman another guy he's a former basketball player six for about I actually like him a lot and and think about it he's they have him ranked the 45th best player Javon Baker from UCF 46 best player we were all excited about Cedric Tilman last year we were all into it oh no no no I didn't like Cedric Tillman I wanted his boy I jayen I wouldn't hire who did nothing to he didn't do anything
but I would trade him I would trade that nothing for that nothing Burger any day the other nothing Burgers fast hard yeah right I like Fast nothing Burger it's still just hard you name we're just naming names at this point like to to have any good idea of who's going to be there at 54 is tough could the yeah I mean in terms of trading up and down sure we're to the point now where from picks 20 and on you see a ton of Trades that happens every year so yeah there's going to be teams moving all up
and down the board as seen a lot recently all these all these kids I'll take over David bill or say could a dozen wide receivers be gone by 54 it's not impossible yeah I mean what Brugler said if 12 are gone you still have four guys who they can look at which once again yeah you're going to say the track record sucks I'm not going to argue I'm just saying guys who you like who are worth the value at that pick it's like could be there when the Browns on the it's like your fanuel right you lose s
o much and then you start to hit a little stride you be like man I want these little money lines okay I throw a four game partly oh I didn't want a little 100 little but by the time you look you didn't hit your stride a little bit and you start to believe like look dwan Jones was a lottery ticket you scratched it off and you won if you could get on hit on a guy like Dean Jones actually there' be truthful Nick chub was a lottery ticket Nick chub was never considered the best running back in the l
eague 35th pick in the draft or whatever that was a second round pick comparatively where you took a guy uh uh uh was his name out of Alabama uh richon Trent Richardson yeah it like you look at the two Trent Richardson was more decorated Trent Richardson was all that never hurt but now you look back and be like well that's second round value I'll take it I think the Browns can find something there um I like this guy too man you we we you talk about the the the overhyped white guys or whatever th
e case may be hey that this kid named pton Wilson from uh NC State people like the linebacker oh man this dude is Logan Wilson's uh cousin cousin or brother I don't know who it is but this dude he run like a 435 is nasty he's nasty at back well the in the end the Browns are in in a position where you want to be where you don't have to draft for need I always think when I hear I feel like when people do mock drafts they try to figure out what the biggest need on the team is and it just doesn't wo
rk that simply obviously if you need a quarterback teams often will reach for a quarterback which I think is a mistake but if you need a quarterback that's going to change the way you draft but if you don't if you're not looking for a quarterback you know if you if if we look at the Browns and we say well their biggest need is linebacker or wide receiver whatever we decide personally it is the bottom line is pretty much anybody the Browns are going to draft in the second round is not likely to b
e a starter for the Browns this year you want to take the best football player and even if he's not impactful as a rookie maybe it's next year when you let somebody else walk or whatever it may be I I think taking drafting based on need I think that's what stupid teams do if it let me me let me all right well let me ask you this question then what if pennick is still on the board at 54 no can't can't cannot it would cause a riot penin is on the board at 54 well I don't know he didn't slid if and
I I will tell you they already have 73 quarterbacks but I will tell you this if the Browns have if the Browns as an organization have decided that Michael Pennock is the next great quarterback then they absolutely should draft him at 54 uh and deal with the consequences from that because the reality is let's face it wherever you are on DeShawn Watson right now if he has a bad season this year they have to look for a quarterback The Following Season yes no doubt if you're not going to hope he tu
rns it around in year four so what what I'm thinking about look look I'm I'm just saying again in the end he's not going to be there but I doubt they would draft the quarterback the Packers have done this like three four times and it looked like it worked well and they it looks like it worked and and they did it with quarterbacks that were way better than these all of Famers coming off MVP Seasons like like you know Jordan love looks like but they were also both older quarterbacks too and the Pa
ckers while it did work this season they missed their entire window of a quarterback in a rookie contract like they got lucky that all these second round picks happened to hit and fill at their team because they had all this money to spend elsewhere while Jordan love was on his rookie deal he's going it's his last year's deal now he's going to get paid and by the way they were weren't sure it was going to work because they didn't pick up his Fife option that that's my point so would it worked ou
t it was a risky move it worked but I don't know if I say is there is there anybody in the draft talent-wise at quarterback would you say if this guy fell to me I I just got to take it the top three yeah but none of those guys they won't be at four but I look I the only reason I threw pinnick out there is because I I think he could fall I think pinck but to the end of the second round think that far but slide yeah he won't if anyone will be there at 54 of the guys we talk about please don't say
JJ McCarthy no I think it be B Nicks McCarthy's going top five I'm telling that's C I know he's going top five I think the guy is a total St I don't understand I don't see I'm not saying I would I'm not saying I would I'm just saying I think I think he's M Jones and Kenny picket same caliber or Daniel Jones I think he's more Daniel Jones and those two that doesn't make you any really better that's a step Daniel Jones is better than is sign Daniel Jones is at least an NFL starter those guys are n
ot NFL you can't win anything significant if Daniel Jones is your quarterback no I don't think so either so no I so yeah for me I you know there's a couple of positions where people say well what's most likely happen I don't think they'll draft the linebacker that High um I think that you could possibly see a receiver I think you could possibly see an offensive tackle taken because it's a deep draft and they may they got two tackles that you know you might want to look r to get rid of Conlin aft
er this next year uh Jed Wills is on his fifth year you may not have in him so that's another guy nothing would surprise me G except for quarterback yeah quarterback they can do anything else and I wouldn't be I know there's positions that seem more likely than others but even if they drafted a corner or a running back or a defensive line it wouldn't Shock Me well come on kicker by the way they already got they already got K YB that's so crazy project stockpile is such a such a a rigging endorse
ment like if they drafted Corner that's definitely stop file well if they drafted corner you can say goodbye to Greg doome next that that's and that's what teams do sometimes when you good team you make moves like that thinking ahead hey we're letting this safety we're letting this corner the Browns get you know as deep and as much as we like the D line they got a lot of old guys in that D line so if they took an end that they thought was going to be a great player that wouldn't surprise me at a
ll look at the chiefs with they just traded the Jerry sne they've drafted a cornerback and they've hit on cornerbacks year after year after year after year to allow them to make a move like that for the Jerry need
