Why Does Bad Fundraising Happen to Good Nonprofits?

Why does lousy fundraising happen to good nonprofits? Is your fundraising "bad?" It might be if 1.) you're anxious about money, 2.) you broadcast needy instead of value, and 3.) when you get a donation, you feel like you won. When it comes to fundraising, is your  nonprofit more like a hibiscus or a rattrap? Andy Goodman asked an intriguing question in the  title of his book, Why Do Bad Presentations Happen to Good Nonprofits? That title got me thinking  and wondering why does bad fundraising happens to good nonprofits? And there are several reasons  for this. All of them are correctable. The first is this. If you forget that you have value  or haven't found out what your value is or haven't articulated that into you
r mind so  that you can share it with donors. You could do bad fundraising and make it all about gathering  people and capturing them instead of having them be attracted to you because of what you offer and  the value they can get by hanging out with you. The second reason why bad fundraising  happens to good nonprofits, like yours, is you forget you live in a world of abundance.  That's not easy to remember when you're pushing and your dollars and your budgets not working.  That there are not e
nough resources out there, but in truth, many donors have never  been asked and have not been asked to make a meaningful gift from someone  who has a value as strong as yours. The third reason bad fundraising happens  to good nonprofits. is we focus on getting, not giving. Just like we serve our clients  and people who come and our customers who are part of our mission, our donors are  also needed to be served. They need to see the value that they can get by playing and  working with you and be
invited into your community and therefore be attracted, like  a hibiscus, instead of trapped like a rat. At nonprofits, you may trap some of your  donors, but trapped animals always run away from the trap. They never come near in the  future versus people who are attracted because of your beauty and the value of what you're  doing will want to get closer to you forever. Thanks for the great information. How do I get my board to become more proactive in fundraising? I believe it’s difficult to convince someone to give if you aren’t giving yourself. Maybe I’m way off but I would love to hear your take on this.
