hello my old friends hello world ones here I am back at my Nemesis this Old Stone Hut this is my third attempt here trying to have a successful shelter night using this H with a chart for a roof will I succeed or will I Scurry back to my car in the middle of the night with my tail between my legs let's find out oh Grim right so the first time I attempted this I used a DD superlite which just got ripped to shreds on the Rock and I bailed it keeps trying to take off like a parachute oh dear oh the
Top Gun N the second time I used a really heavy canvas top that didn't R but it let water through and it was pretty miserable to be honest I've been up all night haven't had anything at all I feel pretty rough so uh let me show you what I've got this time I've got my DD multicam 3.5x 3.5 so this is bigger than the first one I tried and it's going to be a bit stronger because the first one was a super light and I'm hoping because it's a bit bigger and we'll have a bit of extra flap Edge I can pu
t that over the door here to try and stop the rain coming in the doorway cuz that's been a problem every time I've tried this whether it will Rip on the Rocks along the top or not I don't know it may do but I've bought some cloths and stuff to put over any sharp bits along the edges to try and stop it ripping then I've got lots of pegs Skyline cordage and Delta ground anchors and then this my ridiculous big extending pole just great for warding off Predators like this one so what I'm thinking is
I'm going to use this to create a pitch so put it up in the middle so that the rain water will run off the top instead of pulling in the middle that's the plan whether it will work is yet to be seen right let's go I've got about 5 hours of daylight this is ston hot with a top round [Music] three going to put the guy lines on first before I start resling with it out there [Applause] look at this what am I supposed to do with that there threee guidelines oh man I'm not even going to entertain it
I'm going to cut them off and replace them with paracord okay here we are inside got fixed off W these sides [Applause] now okay feel like making tiny bit of progress now there's nothing to Peg it into it's rock so just sort of sliding the peg thing when up and then a big Ro up try and anchor him [Applause] [Music] [Applause] down [Applause] [Music] last [Music] one do Jesus Christ right that's the roof one it's about half one so that took about an hour and a half okay here's me call get that [A
pplause] [Applause] [Applause] up [Applause] you done actually looks pretty nice yeah okay it's up got a nice flap over the front which will keep the rain from coming in through the door couple of issues there already got a rip and around the back I've sort of misjudged it so there's not a lot of material at the back but it seems to be anchored in pretty securely by every attachment point I think it's probably the most Detachment points I've had on one of these things so far so yeah now we just
wait and see I suppose [Applause] nice and dry in here there so in the end I didn't use these because the ground's too Rocky I can't get them in the ground and I've decided not to use my little cloths on the rough Rocky bits because they are expecting this to hail in the middle of the night and I don't want them getting scattered everywhere making a mess trying to find them in the dark so I'm not going to bother you know what will be will be we reckon this one's going to work I don't think it is
never know right I have just changed into my lovely warm clothes I'm sitting in my sleeping bag I'm not overly confident to be honest with you I'm expecting a midnight bail yeah I mean if this rips start fluing around I'm just going to get up and go cuz I don't want to be getting in and out of the bag getting soaked and stuff just wouldn't be a good idea so all my toes are wet my Posh waterproofs that I've been wearing didn't keep the water out so when we do go I'll just have to put my wet clot
hes on top of my bed clothes yeah that was really really hard work every time I do this I forget how horrendous it was last time you know I suppose if this one works it'll be nice to say that I did it successfully Third Time Lucky this is definitely the most sheltered one I've done so far really promising is having that door covers absolutely lashing down out there so the rain's not coming in from that [Applause] direction H come on hang in there to open good sofa problem is you just need that o
ne gust to rip something it's game over I really don't want that roof to come off really don't want it to happen so it is mid January at the moment so I've made life quite difficult for myself doing this today because the nights are so long so we got 15 16 hours I don't know exactly what it is and it's not just that I've got long night in here is that this top needs to hold up for a really long time I didn't really consider that when I um decided to do this in January def my day yeah and it's no
t just the top either is it it's that the guidelines because they're all held down with rocks eventually it just saws through them hopefully I've got enough guidelines on that they'll all sort of work together support each other yeah it's 6:00 and so so far everything is holding in place this pole in the middle did slip once during a big gust and I just popped it back and it's been fine got a ways to go yet though but don't know a little bit more hopeful now than I was earlier but this might hol
d up I don't think I'm ever going to have the really dry cozy little night in a hot that I always imagined with this place but so far off this has been a really good shelter and if I can get through to the morning with the roof on get a fairly decent nice fat I'm going to call this a success it's only half eight but I feel a bit dosy so might try and get some sleep and hopefully this roof will still be here in the morning and lay right next to my pole here so if it falls down in the night I just
whack it back up go back to sleep feel quietly confident now cuz this has been going for hours and not budging we'll see bye [Applause] guys [Applause] good morning and welcome to this beautiful dark January morning where my roof is still on and I have successfully camped in the stone hop with a top I'm warm and dry I've had a nice rest I just can't believe it I have finally done it I think the difference on on this one is having the bigger top that's allowed me to have this lovely lip over the
front stop the rain coming in it's kept me lovely and dry and no rains come through here I mean of course you get condensation on the roof and when the wind blows that condensation flicks off all over you but that can't be helped it's not leaked or anything like the canvas top did all the extra guy points around the edge because it is a bigger top so it's really really held down in lots of places guys are in place still I think it's amazing this pole which has given it a nice pitch so the rain
just runs off and it also holds it nice and tall as well and being a stronger tarp than the first one I used the first one was a super light this one's a bit more robust it's still taken one for the team of course is ripped in quite a few places but they're only little rips it's not sort of gone all the way through like the first one did and ripped into pieces oh yeah got some nice rips going on there yeah look D too go along here as well oh wow look at this that's a nice one sorry top so I gues
s I can finally put this one to bed now when I had the idea for this Stone H with a top thing I didn't realize just how difficult it was going to be I mean it's been absolutely horrendous but it's also been really wonderful you know yeah I'll miss this little heart but I'm really pleased to have done it so I guess that's it it's all over just goes to show us supp assistance pays off just keep going even if it feels nightmarish at the time [Music] bye Hut thank you for everything it's like the en
d of an era maybe you'll be back [Music]

Someone a long time ago spent weeks, maybe months building that hut stone by stone, every day of it being treated to that weather with far simpler equipment to protect them. They persevered and built something that stands to this day. I can imagine them applauding your tenacious effort to use it as an abode again.

@bachgenb

Well - you are the perfect example of "No such thing as bad weather, only inappropriate clothing". Your perseverance and enjoyment are a real tonic. And your videos are not silly or little!

@michaelgauthier2741

I love being in a tent in the rain, hearing every drop hit the tent, amplified like a drum.

@KoppoKen

Alternative method, take a ratchet strap that will fit around the full circumference of the hut. Wrap that round about 2 inches above ground level, tie the tarp's cordage to the strap. A 2nd ratchet strap around the top of the hut will eliminate most of the flapping. You'll lose the little arch at the door though, but a short tarp/cloth attached to the two straps would create a door cover anyway.

@TimelordUK

WOW I loved this. So refreshing to see a nice lady doing this, who is polite and friendly and not selling us anything! I really admire you โค

@jdeborahdevine5586

You are the definition of "If at first you don't succeed, try, try again. I love your persistence and I love your videos.

@danmorgan7737

Hi Claire, from the wolf mountains in Montana,off grid and have lived alone for the last ten years,,your videos make these long winter nights much less lonely. Beautifully done, and beautifull country,must have been quite hard for my ancesters to have left wales so long ago. Love your vids so well done ,,take care and so many thanks! Such a beautifull soul.

@DaveyL1954

Claire's attempt nr 4. May I suggest the following steps Claire. Take up 6 timber A frames, approx 20 feet of 4X2, around 200 roofing tiles, scaffolding, a Workmate...... Yep tha should fit into your slightly bigger rucksack, (or a JCB would be more advisable ๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ˜) it should, with tea breaks, take around two days, then the build should be completed. Method 2 would include getting Nick Knowles out and his DIY,SOS people out, and saying that you live in the roofless building with your 8 kids and limbless partner... They'll be finished within 2 hours, and created a roadway to your Range Rover. Fantastic. Love the channel as always.

@OrangeeDude

I feel like I live vicariously through you.

@Belfast70

I used to do a lot of tracking camping out. Can't anymore with my health, it's great to see it hasn't died out. My kids had no interest growing up, roughing it to them was not having a mobile phone with them. The gear now is so expensive. Better buying ex-army surplus. It's good a little heavier but it stands up to the test. Squaddie proof. Great to see your videos. Reminds me of my oldest daughter you're very sweet. You are setting a great example for your son too. ๐Ÿ‘

@CyrusTheSlick

The miserable weather, the pouring rain pounding the tarp, these are the days I live for. Youโ€™re braver than most!

@The_BenboBaggins

I love how you transformed a cold and wet hole in to a cosy home for a few hours, then in an instant, the tarp was off and the cold and the wet was back again.

@jimsarranadventures3005

Well done, you finally cracked it. My hint with tarps is to make lots of short bungee loops for the tie out points and have all you guy lines terminated with small carabiners. I wrap the guy lines up with small hair ties so that they donโ€™t tangle. We are never to old to learn, I know, in my 70s and still out in the wilds of Scotland when ever I can. Cheers, Jim.

@markperron851

Claire you an absolute goddess for refusing to let it whip you. Not many would have attempted a third effort. Superstar of a woman and absolutely fearless. Bravo ๐Ÿ‘

@thelionofluton4940

Just stumbled across your channel and i must say its something im grateful for. I used to do a bit of wild camping but thanks to covid im now disabled so alas no more camping out for me. Your videos are brilliant, the music, narration , views and yourself are bringing back memories and the smile ive been missing lately. Thank you ever so much.

@russelljackman1413

Hooraaaaaaayyy!!! I am so happy for you, Claire! I've noticed that it has been said here before, but I will add to it: When you smiled, after successfully raising up the center post, I just beamed with you! Your hour and a half-long tarp securement was well worth it. When I watched you struggling with having to place rocks on the guy line stakes, I said, out loud, "Oh, dear!" I have seen both of your other valiant attempts to spend the night in that little hut, and my heart sank with yours, every time. I was so happy and proud of you when I saw that this attempt was a success! Congratulations, and well done, "Claire, The Conqueror!" You are amazing! Big hugs from Utah! ๐Ÿค—โค

@johngray3585

I absolutely love your videos ,the sound of heavy rain while tucked up cozy is one of life's greatest pleasures ,i just love being wrapped up outdoors in dreadful weather just why i have no idea but I'm sure there are millions of us ๐Ÿ˜‰ , but can i say i really am impressed with your bravery especially with the world we live in today im really not sure i could feel safe doing what you do so massive credit to you ๐Ÿ’ช๐Ÿ’ช๐Ÿ’ช๐Ÿค—

@ryanridley9571

Keep going pet ,youโ€™re brilliant โญ๏ธ๐Ÿ’ช๐Ÿป

@michaelnaruta544

Soome thoughts and hints... We spent several nights in similar huts. So some thoughts and hints... 1. You need to prevent the wind from coming into the hut door, otherwise your tarp becomes a kinda sail and flaps up and down causing consequencies. So use another tarp or ground sheet to cover the door fframe or use the tarp in rectangular shape and put one side down to close it. 2. When you are putting the tarp over the top of the walls wind comes in all holes and it again becomes a sail. Find the way to mount it at least 50cm below the top edge of the walls but from inside. Use stretchy cords, find the way to atrtach it to inside walls make make it a kind of roof but inside the walls, incline one side for water drinage. Walls will stop most of the wind. Well done anyway!! Congrats and respect. Good experience.

@kenricnarbrough8191

Your face when the extendy pole props up the roof. Priceless x Great video.
