whether you need to write a report for school or even work and you find that you need to in some way quote your resources then you're going to find that you need to know how to use footnotes or endnotes in that report well with word it is such a simple process hi I'm Terry one of the consumer technology Specialists for Mid-Continent Public Library and let's look at word and footnotes and endnotes as we look at this example today we can see that it has several paragraphs here they all tend to be
about the same size but as I scroll down we really do come close to having a full page on the first page and then going on down we even have a second page of information now let's say that this last sentence in the second paragraph is actually a direct quote and we want to give the author credit for writing whatever is in this sentence so I'm going to put in a quote at the beginning of that sentence and at the end of that sentence and then to give proper credit to the author we're going to want
to stay right where my insertion point is and then we're going to go up above the ribbon and in those tabs we're going to go to the right quite a ways to references and click on references now the first group here is table of contents but we want to go to the right of that and instead go to the footnotes group and the footnotes group as we look at it gives us buttons for both footnotes and in notes we're going to start with the first button here the insert footnote button and click on it and the
n from there we'll see what else we can do when I click on that insert footnote button it immediately takes me down to the bottom of my first page now I'd like to point out that when I click in the text of my document and I go to the Home tab my font is calibri 11. when I come down here to this footnote and isn't it just magic how we now have this horizontal line that's been drawn across and it's exactly the correct length for a footnote and then I have this superscript one I can simply type in
the information that I need to put in for my first quote now there are different styles of footnotes and endnotes you will need to find out what you are required to do when it comes to footnotes and endnotes but here is a basic way of writing footnotes generally for a footnote or an endnote you will want to put in the author the title of the resource if there's an editor in this case you'd want to add that in who the publisher is and the date that the resource was published and then what page th
e quote appears on and that's sort of just Bare Bones Basics and kind of a fairly good General outline of how that would look well that was our footnote one but we haven't actually seen that one in the text so let's go back up to the top where I remember it was our second paragraph last sentence and now we also have that little superscript one right here well let's add in another one and let's go down to the last sentence of the next paragraph and we're going to put in a quote and then we're goi
ng to put in an end quote and then we're going to say you know what I think I want that to be footnote 2 so I'm going to go to references and insert a footnote and it already has the two for me now depending on the style you might be required to put in all of the information that we put in footnote number one but you might be able to use a short style for a footnote where you put in the author's last name just a hint of what the title is but unique enough that even if you have 20 resources you w
ould be able to figure out which one this is and then the page number of that resource we looked at the font in the text but let me click here in the footnote because when I go to home and I look at this font totally different font and a smaller font size if you need to go back and edit this a bit to make sure that the font of the text and the font of the footnote match then that is something you need to be aware of well let's go back to the next to the last paragraph on this first page and I'm
going to put in another quote and I'm going to go back to references go to insert footnote and this time we can even see the 3 in the text and then down here at the bottom if my footnote has exactly the same source as the one above it I can instead of putting in the Full Source or even putting in the short footnote I may be able to put in ibid it all depends again on the style that you are required to use but look at this we have everything that we need on this first page and we have added in th
ree footnotes even though footnotes are extremely easy to add in you may decide that you would prefer to add in end notes so instead of putting your information about the resources that you have used at the bottom of each page you're going to put all of that information at the end but how convenient you can add in the superscript number and then go to the end of the document and type your information so let's compare end nodes to footnotes using basically the same idea so here we are again at th
e end of our second paragraph and I'm going to put in quotes and I'm going to go back to references but this time instead of going to insert footnote I'm going to go to insert endnote when I click on insert endnote it takes me to the very end of my text rather than the end of a page and then I kind of had the same rules for an endnote that I have for a footnote so I can type that in now it is still going to be this different font and nine point as opposed to calibri and 11 Point well let's go ba
ck up to say page two so I'm going to use Ctrl G and go to page two let's go with the second paragraph I'm going to add in a quote on either side of the last sentence in this second paragraph and again my insertion point is just to the right of the end of that sentence and the end of the quote and then I'm going to go back up to references and I'm going to insert an endnote and here is a two while the footnotes definitely used Arabic one two three the end notes are using romanette numbers one tw
o Etc well let's go ahead and put in information for our endnote to and then let's go back up let's say the end of Page Three here put in some quotes and go back to insert endnote and now we have that Roman at 3 and again I'm going to use the same style so I'm going to say this is ibid as I look at this document let me go back up to control home and here is my endnote one as I scroll down and I go to page two that was on the second paragraph the last sentence and here is endnote two and then com
ing down to the third page very last sentence here is endnote three having now added three endnotes to this document it was a little difficult to go back and see where they were so in our footnotes group just under insert endnote is a button that's called Next footnote when I click on that drop down I can't actually go to not only the next footnote but I can also go to the next endnote so when I click on next endnote it takes me to where that endnote is and then I get a blinking cursor let's go
to next footnote again click on the drop down and then go to next endnote and it takes me to the next in node which is number two and again my cursor just blinked for a little bit but there it is number two very easy to see but let's try that one more time let's go back to next footnote click the drop down next end note click and you can even see that it's blinking there for just a tad and we have then the placement for that endnote number three I've gone back up to the top of our research paper
here because it could be that you are required to use say Arabic numbers instead of Roman numerals for your end notes or maybe there are some other changes that you would like to make there are two ways that you can do that first of all you could go to the footnotes group and to the right of where it says footnotes you have a dialog box launcher when you click on footnote and endnote dialog box launcher it takes you to a dialog box and so now I have some choices I could also change footnotes so
let's start there for footnotes yes they're generally at the bottom of the page but they could be directly below text for endnotes generally you want them at the end of the document but if you have a really long document and you have it in sections it could be that you would want to put your endnotes at the end of each section for the footnote layout if you have say two columns in your document then you could essentially have two columns for your footnotes so your footnote wouldn't go across th
e whole bottom of the page but would go say half a page to match the columns for the formatting and remember for our endnotes the default was Roman numerals but we could have one two three ABC Capital ABC and several other things even just some symbols that might work depending on what you want to do then let's say that you have such a large document that it's in sections then you could start at any number as well they don't have to start at one although for the most part they're going to and ag
ain numbering is it going to be continuous throughout the entire document even a really large document or do you want to restart at each section so that section 1 you have your endnotes or footnotes and then the numbering starts over at one again in the next section these settings are fine for us so we're just going to cancel let me go down to the end notes Here because I could also right click on my endnotes or footnotes and in our shortcut menu here we could also have some of the choices that
we've had before so we could go to an endnote from here we could go to note options which is exactly the same as that dialog box launcher while we're looking at the end notes let's say that we need to have footnotes not end notes well especially with endnotes I want to select the entirety of those footnotes I can't just click in one and keep my fingers crossed but I need to select all of these end notes then I can do a right click and in this shortcut menu I have the choice to convert to footnot
e now let's look at this starting on page one I have footnote one and I have footnote one at the bottom of that page as I come on down I can see footnote 2. and as I look at the bottom of page two here is that footnote and then as I come down to page three here is number three and as I come down farther there is the footnote number three now if I decide that I want to remove footnote 2 for whatever reason all I need to do is go to the text not the footnote but the text and find that superscript
2 and then simply press delete on my keyboard now it's removed from my text that as I come down it's no longer at the bottom of my page and as I come down even further what used to be footnote 3 is now number two and that reference has also changed down at the bottom where I now have footnote 2 for my last quote as well to learn even more be sure to go to mymcpl.org forward slash online learning for such great resources as universal class LinkedIn learning Learning Express library and udemy busi
