Your 2024 Self-Promises for a better life with ADHD

This year, we've learnt so much about ourselves and of course, next year we want to become the best version possible. But, instead of going overboard with our New Year's resolutions and hating ourselves by March, let's not set goals but promise ourselves something of value. I know, the ADHD brain loves goals - especially those unachievable ones. But for the sake of your and my mental health, let's try these self-promises instead: No.1: I promise to be patient with myself. We demand so much of ourselves and some of it's just unachievable from the get go. And then we get frustrated and annoyed at how our neurospicy brain can't compete and how wrong we are. Yada yada yada. We're not. Be patient with yourself and allow yourself to f- up from time to time. No.2: I promise not to burden myself with unnecessary tasks. Our to-do lists are fueled by all those little impulses we see. In times of high energy, we can get a lot of that done. Most days, on the other hand, we do a few things at best. And then we're back to hating ourselves. Keep those lists short, add some achievable stuff and cancel those "would be nice but I'm not gonna do it"- tasks. It'll free your mind. No. 3: I promise to ditch the negative self-talk. I'm a loser. I am not normal. My mind doesn't work like that. All of that. Ditch that. You're not a loser, you're different. You're normal but different. Negative self-talk leads to negative self-imagery, leads to us wanting to improve so desperately, leads to setting too high a goal, leads to failing, leads to negative self-talk. Put in an effort to stop yourself from being mean to yourself whenever you notice yourself. No. 4: I promise never to forget that I'm always doing my best. Some days are magical. Others are not. Both days you gave it your all. You gave 100%. Even if you didn't do much (quantity-wise). Understanding that you're giving it your all ALL THE TIME is key. Accepting that the results may vary, is cherry on the icing. No. 5: I promise to value every little success throughout the day. It doesn't seem much but it's a lot. And with AdHD, for some it's cleaning the bathroom, brushing their teeth, working out, or sitting in silence for 3 minutes. If you manage to do that thing that's not "dopamine fueled" for just a while, that while needs to be celebrated. Micro successes are still successes. Celebrate. Wishing you all a Happy New Year and Love for 2024. #newyearsresolutions #newyeargoals #adhdlifegoals #adhdselftalk #adhdselfcare #adhdgoalsetting #adhd #adhdmentalhealth #adhdbrain #adhdwomen #livingwithadhd #
