ision sets the late late late late late show had its biggest audience ever gee then what happened thanks our show is cancelled how come with an audience that couldn't move away from their sets they didn't need shows you mean yep now they're showing nothing but commercials i'm not too sure i want to go home look oh it's probably fixed by now bullwinkle besides we gotta take back this mooseberry bush berry bush you found the last one in the world we can make our rocket feel we can get back to the

ve got five dollars so far our goal is a hundred so we're at five percent thanks to ivory but um today we're going to watch some early television sci-fi we're going to start with captain video the um i guess the definition of television science fiction it was the first show of its kind on television it was a broadcast on the dumont network starting in 1949 um and it was uh performed live same one that ed norton would would bring up captain video video rangers because uh the honeymooners were on
the dumont network too so not only was it a funny gag but they were promoting uh one of their most popular shows the uh um it was immensely popular it was broadcast every evening monday through saturday at 7 pm every evening live this awful science fiction show it had a reputation for being terrible but people loved it it was super cheap cardboard sets and terrible writing it had a reputation for god awful bad writing the the cartoonist dave berry you remember dave berry um uh he said he talked
about watching captain video when he was a kid you could send away for their little their little decoder ring the the little toy decoder ring he said the decoder ring had better production value than the show and it was it was cost a penny or whatever wow 9.99 posted right um uh neil says it was in direct competition with cucafran and ollie in some markets hmm i i imagine kukla fran and ollie much more popular but uh in those markets still is he says kukla actually read the new york city ratings
on air one night what did they say but almost nothing survives of uh captain video uh dumont was not keeping the films of the show they really couldn't in those super early days the we're gonna watch something from the first uh captain video is pulling ahead really says wow um well i don't know how good this is going to be i don't know how worth watching this is going to be it looks pretty awful um the uh the the show the one that we're gonna see um uh is from the first guy to play captain vide
o his name is al hodge he left after two years along with a number of other people because they weren't being paid enough and also they weren't being cut in on the merchandise that dumont was selling with their pictures on it which is a problem that these production companies have had from the beginning and still do um right that's why uh uh that's why rick marshall um dropped out of the third season of land of the lost that's why their dad disappeared the third season of land of the lost becaus
e they were selling merchandise with his picture on it and not the crops were selling merchandise with his picture on it without his permission and without paying him and he was like i'm not going to put up with that and then good for him um so so yeah that's been a perpetual problem but this was the first science fiction television show on television again by the dumont network we need to to examine um the the dumont network in more detail at some point because uh the dumont network were the th
e dumont company manufactured radios they were radio manufacturers and when people started to buying televisions they started manufacturing televisions but there weren't any shows there weren't any tv shows so to uh they started producing they started broadcasting their own shows and of course they were doing everything live and they were selling uh selling dumont tvs so people could watch the shows and that's the same reason that uh the other networks abc nbc and cbs were making their own shows
so that people would have something to watch was to sell televisions um and there there was nothing pre-recorded nothing to show there was literally nothing on the air we've talked about this plenty of times unless somebody sat in front of a live camera and that's why betty white was on tv all day every day yeah in 1949 and captain video was one of those was one of those things and dumont we need to talk about dumont because they they did a lot of experimental stuff including stuff like putting
the first science fiction show on the air they were first people to put wrestling and bowling on tv stuff that the other networks assumed nobody would want to watch and uh of course they were the first people again to put the honeymooners on uh okay let's go into the tv room and watch some captain video um i didn't watch this uh but i gotta tell you it looks pretty dismal let's uh so what's on brand [Music] fighting for law and order captain video operates from a mountain retreat with secret ag
ents at all points of the globe possessing scientific secrets and scientific weapons captain video asks no quarter and gives none to the forces of evil dang stand by captain video it's like mass slaughter huh yeah yeah stand by giving no quarter doesn't mean that you let him go by that long-lasting swell shoot the kill power stand by for [Music] so how many times a night did this guy standing in front of a microphone have to yell captain videos [Music] into immediate flames using nearby mountain
