Pulling the most 'interesting' thing from my week for this vlog #4 - explaining (our) compost toilet!
Our Story:
4 years ago we left the city glam with our heads filled with dreams of sustainability, self sufficiency and connection with nature, for van life, with a toddler to finally settle on a 5 acres subtropical Australian forest, on semi off grid wood cabin with a baby on the way.
We are now balancing lifestyle, needs, aspirations, family life and long term goals in his lifetime project.

hello So today we're going to take a littleĀ
break from cutting wood and we're going to have a poop conversation I think the thingĀ
that worries the most my mom about visiting us is the pooping in the woods as she said soĀ
we have a compost toilet uh and a lot of people are curious about it so I I need to changeĀ
it today so I I'll show you what that looks like we were bracing for a very dry season but it'sĀ
raining again this weekend so in between the drops this is good time to do some of the b
asicĀ
maintenance around the house and changing the compost toilet bin is one of them a showstopperĀ
for manyi considering this lifestyle compost toilet when well maintained is hygienic andĀ
orderless ORS is located just a few meters from our cabin it's private but all open in theĀ
front with a great view into the Forest L with the VI so how does it work where does it all go whatĀ
happens to it well there is only one way to find out here is our little cabin hut from the outsideĀ
no Crystal Clear
Blue Ocean in ours but 3x200 liter barrels that we rotate allowing the time forĀ
the solid materials to compost with wood shaving but the setup is not as simple as it looksĀ
I found here a diagram that explains it a lot better than I ever could or barrels areĀ
modified for the separation of liquid from solid and for ventilation they include air ventsĀ
on the sides to Channel The Air to a chimney a slightly elevated filter at the bottom to letĀ
the liquid pass and a valve that conducts the liqui
d to a r bed for a family of fakas eachĀ
200 lit Bean gets filled in between 2 to 3 months thus allowing the composting processĀ
for 4 to 6 months after the lead is closed ours is a bit labor intensive to change as eachĀ
Barrel after composting are a bit lighter than before but still quite heavy and we don't haveĀ
any Wheels on the beans nor an easy surface to navigate I'll eventually have to modify the beINĀ
to make it easier as I don't see myself growing all with this process nor anybody else
willing toĀ
do it but for now it's on the not so urgent to-do list once arrived at destination weĀ
shovel the compost out after 6 months in a barrel it's really orderless at this stageĀ
everything has decomposed including the toilet paper a little look inside side beforeĀ
putting a base of leaves and shavings just to make sure the mechanism is still intactĀ
and we do the old switch R under the hot house and there we go process finished see it's not that bad mom come visit usĀ
anytime and no I ca
n go back to my day see that was easy the simple life
