(WARNING) The video you are about to watch is undoubtedly one of the most impactful that I have recorded in my life, in terms of traditions. You are about to see women demanding to be whipped with rods until they bleed. As part of a ritual of the Hammer tribe, deep in the Omo Valley in Ethiopia. You must watch the video with the understanding that they have been doing this for hundreds of years and that it is very difficult for anyone outside the tribe, to fully understand the situation. Good mo
rning, afternoon, or evening. I hope you are doing great! Friends, there has just been a radical change of plans. Today we are very fortunate because we have just been informed that there is going to be a ceremony, called "bull jumping" or the bull leap, in which a boy or teenager becomes a man. It is a ceremony, one of the most important for some of the tribes, that are here in Ethiopia, specifically in the Omo Valley. This is thanks to Dena, Dena is a Hamer who learned English and informed our
guide that this was happening right now. So, we changed what we were going to do, to come and see something very special. -Is this the place? -Yes We are already arriving, I don't know if you can see the people gathered over there. It's an occasion where the whole tribe gathers, it's a very important moment and we are very fortunate to be able to experience it today. To witness it, sir. -That's how the good stuff is set up. -We sent Charly to jump over the bull. I see people fighting over ther
e... Oh, it's getting heated... Let's see the context, understand it, and see what we encounter. The Hamer This arrival is one of the most shocking things I have seen: this boy who is here, the women around him, begging him to whip them. See how they fight, for him to grab his rod and hit them. Oh my God... It looks very painful. See how they chase him and give him the rod. This is insane, friends. We will understand it well soon... See how they fight for him to grab the rod. I don't know if you
can hear it, so you can hear how that whip sounds. Oof... I can see that the women are bleeding, from the lashes they have been given. Blood is coming out of their backs. Friends, they are fighting among themselves. They fight so that the man hits them. I don't know if you can see how their backs are. It's incredible... The guide told me, that to endure this pain, they take a lot. I'm not exactly sure what they take, but many of them are alcoholized, because this ritual is very painful. The con
text of everything that is happening is as follows: all the women you see around here, are relatives of the one who is going to jump over the bull, of the teenager who is going to become a man today. Also, he is going to jump to get married. This is the initial part of the ceremony, they come so that married men, those who have already jumped over the bull, give them lashes to show that they are strong, to demonstrate that they are good women, or if they are single, to show that they are a good
match, for any single man around here, they see them and want to marry them. We are starting very strong, but this is the norm in this place. Something that strikes me a lot, is how despite seeing signs of pain on the faces of some, not all, because most of them after they are given those lashes remain unmoved, they do not show gestures to demonstrate their strength, but still, the ones I can see that are in pain, run after the one with the whip, twisting, still, they put their bodies to keep be
ing hit, because the scars that each woman has, are a show of how strong they are as women. The tribe we are in is the Hamer tribe. They have their ways of identifying married and unmarried women. This is vital so there are no problems, that a single man takes a married woman or makes advances. For example, here we can see women who have a large ring with a peak; that's the first wife of a man. Now they are running, because a new man who is going to whip them has just come out, so they run to be
whipped. The first wife has that large ring with the peak; the second wife has two rings, and the third one doesn't wear anything, but she is distinguished because all of them have their hair, as you can see, with a kind of red dreadlocks. That same material they use to bathe, practically, women never pour water on themselves. They only bathe from the knee down. The lashes are over, and it's time to return to the village, where they will prepare everything for their relative to perform the ritu
al, the bull jumping, to become a man. So, they go back happily, singing and dancing. We are arriving at the place where everything is going to happen. See what a celebration, see the happiness. All of this is after the lashes they have been given. As in many tribes here they are also armed, for territory conflicts, cattle theft, and because we are near the border with Kenya, so, even here in this celebration, see how there are people with high-caliber rifles. This one you see here is the one wh
o is going to become a man today. He is the cause of this whole ceremony. And all these people you see, there are many of them, there must be more than 300 people gathered here, are all relatives of the mother and father of the person who is going to jump. This is one of the largest tribes in the entire Omo Valley; there may be about 50 thousand members. What they are boiling here is water they take from the river and boil it to turn it into sorghum ferment, from what I understand, to make more
beer. Everyone here is drinking beer, it's a huge party. Whoever wants beer or needs to be active, like those who give lashes, drinks coffee, which is what they are doing in this other vessel. What madness, I thought the lashes were over and no, new men who give lashes arrive, and see, as he runs to dodge the women who want lashes. He runs because, I imagine, he is tired, he wants to come to the party, and all the women follow him. I'm told there is no fixed cost for buying a woman, because alth
ough it sounds harsh, that's how things work here, also, I think in all the tribes we are going to encounter it will be like this, but the woman here does not have a fixed cost unlike the others. I'm told the cost can vary, for example, they are now paying: 50 goats mixed with sheep, 10 bulls, and different things requested by the wife's family, the wife of the one who is going to jump the bulls was chosen by the boy's parents. Something I am understanding is that for them this dance, these jump
s, this round in which some get in, is their way of celebrating, just as for us there is the parade or twerking for the young people. this is their party, Going to the center of the round and jumping among everyone, is the fun. Finally, the celebration is over, and it's time to finish the ceremony, it's time for the young man to make the jump over the bulls, to become a man. That one in the middle of all the cattle, is the one who is going to jump and he has to make the jump naked, that's why he
's completely naked. Remember that all the women over there, are relatives of the one who is going to jump. That's why, they spin around him and the cattle, singing to bring good luck and strength to the one who is going to jump. Next, what is going to happen is that his relatives, who have already made the bull jump, are going to line up between 10 and 15 bulls and he has to run and walk on the backs of all of them. If he falls, he has the chance to try again, but if he fails to pass the bulls
from side to side walking on their backs four times, going back and forth, it means he failed. I'm told, if he fails, the women who came will whip him, who are his relatives, and they will say all kinds of obscenities to him. After all that, he will become a man, but he will be marked. It is so important to perform this ritual, that young men who are 20-25 years old and have not yet done it, are not taken seriously, nobody wants their friend, they also cannot marry. And if they die without doing
this ceremony, their belongings are given away or thrown away, because they do not want to have absolutely anything to do with them. They select the cattle by force, in theory, everything is ready for the boy to jump, we are just waiting for him to gather momentum. There he goes! He jumped it and made it to the other side. This is one of the most important moments in this person's life. He just has to do it one more time, if he succeeds, he is a man and can get married. He did it! But I thought
once he did it, there would be a big celebration. I thought this was going to get out of control, however, everything ended. This is the moment when I thought there would be the most chaos. Nagaya. -You can say Nagaya?. -Nagaya. The boy is undergoing a ritual, the women are emitting that sound with their throats, I don't know if you can hear it but there are some horns sounding but mainly it's with the throat. And the boy we see from afar because it's something very personal they cut a lock of
his hair, they added some steel bracelets to him, they approached the cattle. Apparently, he is already a man. Finally, the ceremony he had to do to become a man is over. Well my friends, finally, here the video of today ends, an incredible experience, I didn't think we could live something like this... Tell me what you thought of this ceremony, give lots of love to all this content if you liked it. Don't forget to subscribe to share the video if you liked it and see you in the next video. Pura
vida, and kisses from someone who today saw a young man become a man by jumping over some bulls.

@UniversoWicca

Felicidades
