Hi I'm Lizz Hoskins and I teach Film
Studies and Media Studies here at Richard Huish College. After completing a Masters in Film
and Television Theory at Bristol University I'm able to transfer my passion for the moving
image into the delivery of the fantastic Film Studies A Level. Film Studies is an exciting and
challenging A Level analyzing film in its many forms from across the globe and different time
periods. You will gain an appreciation of film as an art form and enhance your underst
anding of the world. You will study the key elements of film form including cinematography, mise en scène, editing
sound and performance our modules include mainstream Hollywood Cinema from 1930 to 1990,
American independent film, British European and Global film we also study types of documentaries,
films from the silent era alongside experimental film making and short films too.
Lessons will give you an insight into how film language is constructed what techniques are used to manipulate
a
udiences and will develop both your analytical skills and your essay writing skills. Note taking
and debating in class will become second nature and will improve your confidence and your
writing ability, which in turn will benefit all your subject choices at Huish. The course
is assessed by two essay based exams at the end of the second year, equivalent to 70%, the
final 30% is coursework. During each term short practical film making tasks in groups are used to
illustrate newly learned theo
ry and filming and editing techniques building towards the coursework
component at the end of the first year. Coursework includes the choice of making a short film or scriptwriting and storyboarding. All Huish students are welcome to our weekly Film Club in which we
watch and debate classic films, both old and new. I do Film Club every Friday with some of the Media
teachers we have students who come in and we talk about films that we watch, so there's been times
where I've watched a film and
then had a certain view in it and then have studied different the
theories within cinema and then have gone back to it and have changed my views.
We also have an annual Film Festival to showcase and celebrate the work of our students on the big screen. Film
Studies offers exciting progression routes. Oxford and Cambridge Universities offer Masters and
PhD courses in Film Studies and Screen Arts. Russell group Universities value Film Studies
when prospective students apply to Humanities or
Arts related discipline.
Employment in the screen Industries continues to grow in the UK notably in the expansion of the various
film studios across the country. Career paths for students may include practical jobs such as
Film Making, Directing, Producing, Ad Editing, but a qualification in Film Studies also allows you to
move into more theoretical pathways such as Film Criticism, Journalism, Teaching and Education. I love
teaching Film Studies because I witness students gain important new
transferable skills and see
their analytical abilities expand alongside their passion for film growing exponentially.
Thanks for watching, we look forward to you studying at Huish and meeting like-minded
film fans on the Film Studies A Level.
