Grand Rapids family creates 'take one, leave one' garden box for community

It's a box for them to put extra plants, flowers and vegetables out for the community. The box has seen more than just regular garden items, though.

you may have heard or even seen the free little libraries around town the idea is that people can take a book but are asked to leave one for the next person and one family has taken that concept and put its own spin on it Kaylee Kirby joins us in studio tonight so Kaylee what is this family putting in there Melissa the Fowler family has created a little take one leave one Garden it's a place for them to put extra plants flowers even some vegetables out for the community and the hope is for other
s to pick up or drop off some of their clippings the Fowler family has lived in Grand Rapids for the last five years but this is the first year for their take one leave one garden box people have come out of the woodwork and left lettuce onions whole plants for people books movies we had a can of spam so that was fun they say it's been pretty successful actually started after they moved their Garden from their backyard to the to the front yard this is the piece of area the land that we have in o
ur city and so we are just trying to plant things that provide for our family plants that we use to eat the Fowlers say they like knowing where their food is coming from and it's a way to get the kids involved her and the kids designed everything put the put the plants in place where they wanted them and then I was basically the grunt work I helped build everything and and make it come to fruition they have salad greens tomatoes peppers onions and more I've got these the goal is to teach their k
ids about the ecosystems how to grow their own food and how to harvest it it's definitely a skillet they can use in the future and honestly when they watch something grow they're more apt to try it and eat it this is probably more expensive than the grocery to be honest but the learning and the the family bonding that we get plus we know where our food's coming from with well so this is the first year of their Garden but they know they will have extras of everything soon their free little garden
is their way of giving back to the community and they hope more of these pop up around town reporting in studio Kaylee Kirby WTOL 11.
