[Music] welcome back to living 808 well we all want our kids to get a great education but declining test scores have worried a lot of families Dr nroth launched elephant learning to help and he joins us now with all the details Aloha doctor hi okay excited to talk about this because I think a lot of parents are looking for help for their kids but before we talk about how you can do that let's talk about elephant learning what is it exactly sure it's an online math academy for children and uh we
cover from Counting through algebra on average children in our system learn about a year and a half of math over the course of 10 weeks when they use it just 30 minutes per week and um we deliver the curriculum uh via gamification so what we've done is we've taken the activities that early age education researchers have already determined our effective for teaching the uh Concepts and um we combined that with the adaptive algorithms so that we can keep Pace with the student um we turned them int
o puzzle games so to the student it feels like a puzzle game think anry words but for Math and um yeah basically it's extremely effective uh we have a dashboard for parents where um you're able to see exactly what your students working on and how you can help with that subject if you want to get more involved and um also uh we have uh a dashboard for classrooms and for schools nice okay well I feel like that makes sense to gamify something like this because kids these days they're used to always
being you know on their iPads and tablets and always being stimulated by games might as well make it something that they can actually learn from so I mean it sounds really great but let's explain what you've actually been able to achieve what have you noticed you know with your students using this method and how it differs from school systems sure well so one thing that surprises me is that a lot of parents report that their students Now find math fun but the reason why that is is because we fo
cus on teaching mathematics as a language and what our goal was was can we get a student to catch up to the language of the classroom so what we see is that four out of five students start kindergarten unprepared for the kindergarten curriculum and that the students that start behind tend to stay behind so the idea was is if we could catch them up on the language so that they could understand the teacher then they're actually going to enjoy class right yeah that makes so much sense actually so o
kay when you're giving advice to parents you know um they maybe have a kid that's currently behind because I think a lot of parents sometimes might not even want to see that or admit that what advice would you give to those parents though that notice that their kids a little bit struggling sure so if you have a student that's struggling with math um what we want to do is we want to start at their level of understanding so um what we do in elephant learning is we start with an assessment where we
're able to kind of start behind the student and then catch up to them what this does is it builds confidence as the students coming into the the system so if your student has math anxiety Then we're helping build confidence because the puzzles are always going to be at their level um but if you uh are working with your student you want to work with them then at their level of language so if you can find that out first uh that would be helpful yeah and that's again how you guys start so you know
