How to perform first aid and CPR on a choking infant / baby?

Do you know what to do if an infant (a baby aged 0 – 12 months) is choking? This video will demonstrate how to identify signs of choking in babies and how to help an infant who is choking. Linda Nylander-Housholder, APRN will show you how to perform first aid for choking and how to provide CPR for a baby to keep him/her alive until Emergency Medical Services (911) arrives. Hello! And welcome to Nicklaus Children's Health System Learning and Development Choking Educational video. I'm Linda, and I will demonstrate how to help an infant who is choking. If choking is severe, CPR may be required. What is choking? Choking means something such as food or an object has gotten stuck in the airway, preventing air from getting into the baby's lungs. Choking can be mild or severe. Mild choking means that the baby can cough and make sounds If the baby is coughing, let them c
ough! They are trying to get the object out But if you are worried about the infant's breathing at any time DO NOT HESITATE! CALL 9-1-1 Sever choking means that the airway of the baby is completely blocked The baby will panic and will not be able to breathe or make any sound In severe choking there is no coughing, no crying, no sounds Your quick response to choking can save your baby's life You need to get the obstruction out so the baby can breathe. To get the object out you will need to give a
series of back slaps and chest thrusts. Let's start with the back slaps. Place your baby face down over your forearm supporting the head and neck with your hand. You may wish to sit and support your forearm on your thigh. Back slaps are given down and towards the head. We'll give a series of 5. Let's try. One -- Two -- Three -- Four -- Five If the object has not come out you'll need to place the baby face up support the baby's head and neck with you forearm place him face up. Place two fingers
just below mid-nipple line over the center of the chest and give 5 chest thrusts. Try it with me! Place your baby face down over your forearm supporting their head and neck with your hand You're going to maybe wish to sit so you can support your forearm on your thigh. Then give 5 good back slaps down and towards the head. Right between the baby's shoulder blades. Let's try. One -- Two -- Three -- Four -- Five If the object does not come out and the baby is still wiggly squirmy no sounds, no cou
gh, no cry, turn the baby face up supporting their head and neck with your hand. You'll need to give 5 chest thrusts just below mid-nipple line over the center of the chest One -- Two -- Three -- Four -- Five No cough? No cry? Still wiggly squirmy? Turn the baby face down begin the series back slaps again One -- Two -- Three -- Four -- Five Turn the baby face up begin the series of chest thrusts again One -- Two -- Three -- Four -- Five Face down, 5 back slaps. Face up, 5 chest thrusts. One -- T
wo -- Three -- Four -- Five Continue back slaps and chest thrusts until the object comes out and the baby cries and begins to breathe or until the baby becomes floppy and unconscious in your arms If the baby becomes unresponsive and floppy in your arms Place the baby on his or her back on a hard surface such as the table or the ground Yell for help. "Help! Help! Someone call 911!" "Hey you in the blue shirt call 911!" If you're alone you'll need to tgive 5 cycles of CPR. Don't hang up! Put the p
hone on speaker so emergency staff can help you. We're gonna start with compressions. First you're gonna find your hand positioning two fingers just below mid-nipple line in the center of the baby's chest. Push hard and fast. Count out loud to a count of 30. 1 - 2 - 3 - 4 - 5 - 6 - 7 - 8 - 9 - 10 11 - 12 - 13 - 14 - 15 - 16 - 17 - 18 - 19 - 20 21 - 22 - 23 - 24 - 26 - 27 - 28 - 29 - 30 After 30 compressions you'll need to check the infant's mouth to see if the object has come forward. If you see
an object, take it out. If you don't see it, do not place your fingers in the child's mouth you may push the object further down. Try it with me! You check the baby's mouth. Open the mouth, look to see, no objects are there. Remember DO NOT place your fingers in the mouth if you do not see an object. If nothing is there you're going to attempt to give 2 breaths. Cover the baby's mouth and nose with your mouth and give 2 little puffs hoping to see the chest rise. [She puffs into the baby's mout
h twice] If air does not go in we'll need to complete the 30 compressions and breaths, again. Let's try it as a set. 1 - 2 - 3 - 4 - 5 ...... 26 - 27 - 28 - 29 - 30 Check the mouth. Do I see anything? No. Attempt to breathe 2 breaths into baby's mouth. Air does not go in. Repeat. 1 - 2 - 3 - 4 - 5 ...... 26 - 27 - 28 - 29 - 30 Check the mouth. Attempt to go in. [2 breaths] Air does not go in. Repeat. 1 - 2 - 3 - 4 - 5 ...... 26 - 27 - 28 - 29 - 30 Check the mouth. Nothing? Try to breathe [2 brea
ths]. Air does not go in. Repeat. 1 - 2 - 3 - 4 - 5 ...... 26 - 27 - 28 - 29 - 30 Check the mouth. Attempt to breathe [2 breaths] Continue giving compressions checking the mouth and attempting to breathe until the object comes out the baby wakes up, cries, or coughs or until emergency personnel arrives to assist you. No words can express how grateful I am for this video! I watched this when my son started solids ... well today Nov.30 my one year old started chocking on a piece of mango! I rushed him into position and after 20 of the longest seconds of my life the fruit came out !! I thought I was going to lose my baby boy and I would have if it were not for this video ! What can I say, I saw this video a few days back when I decided to give my 7 month old finger food. So I have her a slice of watermelon, and within less than a second she took a piece and started choking. It was choking not gaging. I could see her right through, I did exactly what the video said. Put her back on my arm and back slapped. While doing this I opened my door and rushed to the neighbors gate. Before they opened my baby chucked out the big piece of watermelon right at there door. The neighbor aunty took her in her arms immediately and pacified me n my baby both, I am thankfully to them for opening their door and helping us out. I am forever grateful for their humanity. May God bless them. But for THIS video. What can u say. Thank heavens, Thank God, Thankyou Almighty for making this watch this video. I just watched it for knowledge sake and never thought I would need it. How wrong was I. I needed it just after few days. Thank you thank you thank you, I am still shaking and my baby is fine. 3 days ago I was watching this video to know what to do if anything happens to my 13 day old baby and this afternoon we got tested, She was turning red, choking with her saliva it was thick and i did the back slaps and the saliva came out to the mouth and mucus out of the nose but it was a lot so i sucked her nose and she began to breath normally. And 911 arrives. I just want to say thankyou for making this video.

Years ago, it happened to my baby. He was about 2 months old and had a severe choking with breast milk and phlegm. I didn't know what to do. Thank God, I was at my parents' place that day so they inmidiately handled the situation. I was as histeric as MJ's mom. Since my boy wasn't responding to CPR, my dad managed to take a taxi to the ER and kept trying on the way. My babe's face and fingers were blue but, in the middle of the way, my son took a deep breath and started to cry. I remember we got to the hospital 5 min. later and they did some tests on him. The Dr. said we were so close to lose him. It's been 5 years 5 months after that episode and I still can remember his widely open eyes stearing at me like asking me for help and his stiff limbs. I couldn't help him by myself. If my parents hadn't been there... Now, I'm convince that every mom should take CPR lessons during her pregnancy time, just in case. That's a recommendation I give every friend that gets pregnant. Thank you for sharing this highly important video!

So this happened to our 2 week old boy a night ago... I'm pretty familiar with these methods and I can tell you it saved his life. My wife and I panicked like hell, screaming for help 2 in the morning as he went limp. Horrible to go through but its good to have this info... I praise people poating videos like this... thank you

Thank you so much for this video. It happens to my newborn baby. I was panicking on that time when look at him turn blue & can’t breathe. I try to call 911 but I can’t maybe because too panic. Then suddenly remember this video & try my best. Lucky he start to breathe again. I’m glad I know this video before it’s happen to me
