Nonprofit Marketing Strategies

(upbeat music) ♪ Everybody get up ♪ - Hey, nonprofits, welcome back. In today's nonprofit marketing tip video, I'm gonna show you how to leverage Instagram stories to get more awareness and more engagement. So this training is gonna be very tactical. I'm gonna share my phone, what I'm looking at while I do it and it's gonna appear up here. So by the end of this video, you will know how to use Instagram stories, and how to use the stickers so that you can get more engagement and more awareness, s
o let's jump in. This is my Instagram homepage and there's a really cute pig on there right now that I think you'll get to see it. And if you look right above the pig, you'll see that there are circles that are highlighted. These are Instagram stories. Now the difference between Instagram story and Instagram posts is that the Instagram story only lives on your profile for 24 hours. As you can see from the top You get the first visibility before the actual feed. So on the top here these are accou
nts here that I've interacted with the most, and so that's why they're appearing there. And so this is one reason you wanna get your nonprofit on Instagram stories, is because the more you can get people to engage, the more you'll show up first on their story. So let's get into how you can create an Instagram story. What you wanna do is click on the photo or the camera icon on upper left-hand side, and it's going to default to normal. Now you can upload your own photo from your camera roll here
or you can actually snap a photo and have it appear real time, but what we're gonna do is toggle over to the type section, so it's two options to the left, and in order to get to the stickers you have to type something, so let's type question, and then click next. You can delete this text if you didn't really want it by dragging it to the trashcan, and then you can click on the square happy face. Now I wanna go over couple of the stickers here, and so if you're looking to get some more awareness
and visibility, you can do a location tag. So let's say that you're based in Dallas, Texas, we can do a Dallas, Texas location tag. And then let's say that you wanna appear for anyone looking for Dallas nonprofit. So just by adding these two tags or sticker to your story, you're having an opportunity to appear in more people's news feeds and story. What we're really interested in for this tutorial is how you can leverage the stickers that ask questions and drive engagement. So we're gonna go ah
ead and click on the poll, the poll is where you can ask a yes or no question. So let's ask, you know, have you ever volunteered with us? When we put this poll up, people then have the option to say yes or no, and then we can follow up with them. So stay tuned, I'm gonna show you how you can access the answers and responses and then go an extra level and send people a direct message. It's really cool, so stay tuned. Now I could put multiple stickers on here and I'm going to do that just for trai
ning purposes, but more than likely you're gonna do just one per story. So let's go back into the stickers and I'm going to click on questions. Now questions are open ended, so here you can ask a different type of question that needs a little more context. So let's say, when was the last time you volunteered with us? Now people could put something in like, hey it was September last year, or they could say it was at the gala last week. It's very open ended, so this is not something you wanna ask
if you're looking for quantifiable data; whereas, the poll you could say 75% said yes and 25% said no. But haven't the open ended question can give you some great insight sometimes, so we do encourage you to use it. Now let's say you put a sticker on there and you don't want it there anymore, just like that text you drag it to the trash and you can delete it. Another trick that I wanna show you is how you can actually put a photo into this story right here without doing it in the beginning. So i
f you go out of Instagram and you go to your camera roll what you wanna do is click the little share arrow and copy it, and when you go back into Instagram the sticker pops up, so you can add the sticker to your story. No here's a cool feature, so you're able to move all this stuff around. Something I like to do is actually hide the location tag and hashtags just so that it looks cleaner. They'll still appear in people's stories and what I mean by that is the people who aren't following you. The
y won't have the tags on them, but you'll get that visibility. So here's where you can use a photo and a question. So this is just a quick trick, you can put in as many as, you know, five photos, you just have to pinch 'em down, you can twist 'em, really quick and easy way to add photos to a story. So I'm gonna go ahead and delete that, delete this question, and let's try a new one. So let's say we want to do a poll or a quiz, the quiz is really great because this is where you can understand peo
ple's knowledge about certain issues. And then if people aren't getting the answers right, you can develop content to make them aware of the correct answer. So let's pretend that we're a nonprofit in Africa and we focus on wildlife. We can ask a question like, what's the number one animal in danger of extinction? And on this one it looks like the text can only do a certain number of characters, so you can say the actual number one and that way we get more room. So in this example, you have to pu
t in options so we can say the elephant, the rhino, and I don't know the real answer so I'm just putting in things here. And we could also say something like buffalo, I know buffalo is probably not in Africa (snickers). And then what you wanna do is press down on the correct answers, so right now rhino is green that's the right answer. If someone selected the right answer a little confetti will pop up, (bright popping and twinkling) and so we can put that on our story too. Quizzes are an amazing
sticker to use so that you can get people's understanding of where they are at in terms of knowledge base. So I'm gonna delete this one and another sticker that you can use is a countdown. So I've already created a countdown in here for Giving Tuesday, so this is gonna pre-populate for me, which is nice, I can also create a new countdown. But let's go back Giving Tuesday. So let's say I wanted to remind people once a week that Giving Tuesday was coming up or that a special event was coming up,
I could put in this sticker, I could also put in another image or some text that gives context to what it is, and I can say something like, you know, click the link in our bio to learn more, and then drag that down, so that's another great cool feature. People can also click on the countdown so that they can get a reminder for when the event's coming near. So if you have any events, I encourage you guys to use the countdown in your stories. And another thing that you can use is this range of the
heart emoji, the heart-eyes emoji. So you can ask a question and if you wanted to understand the scale, maybe from like a zero to 10, people can respond to it. Or let's say you just had a photo in here and you wanted to get people to respond or just to engage by swiping it, you could do that too. Okay so let's get to the donate sticker 'cause this is really great sticker. So donate stickers, or donation stickers, are available to both your followers and you as a nonprofit. So let's pretend that
you're the nonprofit and we'll say that we're Orange County United Way. And it'll automatically populate text for you, but we're gonna delete this so we can create our own fundraising title. And let's say we're going a book drive donation, so we can say donate $5 to give five students a book. So we can put that on our story, we could add an image, we could add text to give more information about the need, and we could also add in maybe a GIF or GIF, however you wanna say it, emoji. So we can, y
ou know, put books in here. We could add a fun emoji so that the books appear and give it more visual context. And so this is really great 'cause you could do story, let's say that maybe you wanna talk about the problems that are going on with education. So maybe that people are dropping out of high school and the problem is all the way back to when they were in third grade, they didn't learn how to read well. So you can create the story that tells the problem, how you're solving it, and then th
e last story would be an opportunity for people to donate. So get creative with how you use the stories. Again they only last for 24 hours, they don't have to be polished. But this is something you definitely wanna test especially if it can give your nonprofit donations. I think we went over all of the major stickers, let me just take another look. Yes, so you can also mention accounts. So if you have a partner and you wanted to share that, you could mention them and then they can share that on
their page too as well, so that's just a quick tip. I wanted to show you how you can access your data from the people that responded to your polls and your questions. So if we go back to our homepage and we click on our bio, there is a little clock looking thing on the upper-left and that is the archive of all of your stories. So when you click this, you can see how many people actually responded, how many people saw it, so I'm gonna scroll up to one of our first stories from September 26th. And
on this story, we're asking people if they would be interested in Instagram training, and 100% said yes. So how do I see who responded? Well what you do is you click on the seen by 56 at the bottom and it'll show you who voted yes and who voted no. So if I wanted, I could click the little airplane looking symbol and send them a direct message. So I could say something like, hi we just published an Instagram training on YouTube thought you might be interested; click the link in our bio to see it
. And then I can send that, so this is a really cool way that I can have a direct line of communication with someone that I know was interested. Similarly, if you think about our example of have you ever volunteered with our nonprofit, if the people said yes, you could respond to them and say thanks so much for volunteering with our nonprofit. We have another amazing opportunity coming up on August 9th, here's the link to register if you're interested. And similarly if the person had answered no
, you could then send them a direct message as well. You could say, hey I saw that you haven't volunteered with us, if you interested, we have this opportunity on August 9th and here's the link to register for more information. So going into the direct message is not something a lot of people are doing, but it is a way to level up your Instagram game, to get more interactive with your donors and supporters. And again building these relationships online is what's going to get people to take actio
n, to support you, to donate to you eventually. So we really encourage you to take advantage of the Instagram stickers.
