[waves crashing] [ominous music] At times we were
pretty scared. When you're going down you
don't think about anything. You don't think
about your family. You don't think about
anything, because if you do, yu
won't do it. If you think about your
family and loved ones, you realize what you're
doing is not normal. If you have a family and
children, you should go out the
door. But it was hard to
go out the door here. So you had to
make another door. Plus, life goes on. Life is
not
inside a jail. I think life is
outside the jail. BUENOS AIRES, DECEMBER, 1991.
5:45 AM [electricity buzzing] [mysterious music] [tape] The promise I made to
tell this story was to the
dead. To tell this story... ...was to the dead. [typing] They won't believe a word I say. [loud rattling] [thunder rumbling] Hold on!
This isn't an interview. You're asking me questions and I
haven't even told you the story. [journalist] So this is a story. So you're a smart ass, huh? What I'm going to
tell you
is exactly how it happened. Except for a few details... some fake information,
so that no one goes to jail. What's the matter? Don't you believe me?
Why should I lie? It's not that I don't trust you. I'm just wondering why
you would call me. Why you would take such a risk. You have to admit it's
pretty strange and risky. Didn't I tell you I'm doing this
because I made a promise? Yeah, you told me that. But who did you
make the promise to? [chuckles] To the
Virgin of the fugitives? [chu
ckles] Let's make a deal. I'll tell you who I
made the promise to. But you won't ask any questions
until I finish telling the
story. Fine. It's a deal. The promise I made to tell
this story was to the dead. What do you mean the...? What's the matter?
You can't even wait one minute? Don't ask. I already told you.
I'll start from the beginning. From the beginning. [suspenseful music] I'll at least do it for myself. [typing] [overlapping chattering] Good morning. What I can tell you is that the
fug
itives are very dangerous. They're two convicted felons and
five that have been prosecuted. They escaped from a 20 meter
tunnel that was dug from the
jail hospital. Officer, could you give us
any more information? All I can tell you is that
we don't know anything. Good day. Thank you. How're you doing? By the look on your face you've
probably been to some dive. Don't tell me, I'll
just die of envy. Before you die, tell me
a little about all this. Seven guys escaped from
a tunnel in the hospital
jail. Oh, so nothing happened...
It was nothing... Ricardo, what do you
know that we don't? You're going to get into trouble
with so many felons as friends. Oh, really? I'm sure you're in enough
trouble with so many cops as
friends. - What are you insinuating?
- That you're a rat! - He didn't insinuate anything.
- He's telling you that you're a
rat! What are you saying? You don't know what you're
saying because you're drunk all
the time. Go write your report! You wouldn't believe it... Five guys
ran past here
looking like black devils. They were all muddy...
you wouldn't believe it! They were naked...
Well, in their underwear. And they just shot past here. Yeah, one of them threw
a knife under a car. Then the police came
and picked it up. No, man, no...
You don't get it at all. [Bull] Well, how
are things going? He's not cooperating. They're all the same. What else could you expect? You wanna start over? No. We didn't get
any help from the guards. And we weren't a band either. I told y
ou we met
at the hospital. [journalist] You have to
understand that I need details. I'm writing an article... I can't just believe
anything you say. So that's the problem,
you don't trust me. So why should I trust you? Because I write about criminals,
I don't write police stories. Some people in my field
don't trust you. You know what they say? That you work for
the secret service. [chuckles] What? Do you work
for the secret service? You know perfectly well that we
called someone to do this
art
icle. And that person said
you had to write the article. That person trusts you. We trust you. Do you trust us? [phone rings] [journalist] Two weeks had
gone by since the news of the
jailbreak. A correspondent of mine in
the Devoto jail said they'd cal
me. And that's when
I got involved. I did research
on the fugitives. It was hard to understand
the nature of this group, since they didn't seem to
share a criminal background. The two that called me
were famous. Between the two of
them, they had held up 50 armored
trucks and several provincial
banks. The whole national police
force must have been looking fr
them. They took me through a maze
of trains, phone booths and coded calls. [train rattling] [phone rings] [train whistle blows] I got on thinking that
none of my enemies would have gone through so
much trouble to make me
disappear. The gun I had between my belt
and my shirt was bothering
me. That was it. Come in. [door closes] Make yourself comfortab
le. Have a seat. - Have you eaten?
- Yeah. [Vulcano] So tell me... Do you believe in God? Well... that depends. Ricardo. [glasses clink] He has to pack. We still have to keep moving. But don't worry. We're also
waiting for a phone call. Alright, let me make... a kind of introduction. The idea of the jailbreak
was thought up by two people. Two guys that really
wanted to escape. Because they had many years to
go, and several other things... Previous jailbreak attempts... and a story that started r
ight
then and that I'll tell you
about later. I said right then because
it was like a lucky break... ...a sign. These two guys found
a way to screw Devoto over. I know you get what I mean. I don't know if you were inside. But I know you're
familiar with this stuff. [Vulcano] Dreams defeat you
more than the cops or the
informers. We're talking about escaping
from the Villa Devoto jail. It's in the middle of the
city, in a residential area. Besides the outside wall,
it's surrounded by a s
ecurity
belt, which is constantly
guarded by dogs. If they find you there,
you're a goner. Jails have hidden areas. It's strange that buildings
filled with more and more
people should still have
abandoned areas. Closed off basements that
no one wants to remember. Corners where
no one looks. We were part of
the old guard. We had our own codes.
We were like a family. How are you, man? OK?
How're you doing, man? It's so easy for a fantasy to
kill your desire to live for
real.
You're locked between
the walls, behind bars, but the worst part is the
muffled howling of those caged
souls... your jail mates... your worst enemies. [thud] Either you were man enough
to take the beating... or you were man
enough to get killed. Then the new
guys came in. They were dangerous,
they were pissed off. When we left the jail we
left behind our jail lingo. We blended in with
the regular folk. We had a certain style,
professionalism. But these guys
remained in cha
racter. They'd have a shoot out over
a football match or a tape
recorder. I sound like an old geezer
when I say things like that. But ask anyone. It's just that the guy
took a swing at me. I got pissed. I'm a captain like you, man. There are no codes anymore.
You can count on me, man. [thud, groans] What's wrong with this guy? Adaptation issues. He's from
the old guard. A dinosaur. - A trained dinosaur?
- You can train dinosaurs? Where are they? He's an assistant at the
hospital, and Bulls
's friend. He's really behaving. He's
gonna be with us for a while. It's on you...
Who else is there? I'll raise you. Who else is at the hospital? The Martian. The guy who acts
crazy. He's got no family. No one remembers what he did.
Not even him. Then there's Triple.
A tough guy with no friends. He used to work alone
at bank exits. If he had to break
an old lady's arm, he would. But he wouldn't get angry. I don't know anything
about the guy from Corrientes. I do. He's just a chump. A relative g
ot him in trouble. Then there's... "I don't know". What don't you know? They call the guy
"I don't know". He's a full time con man. He lost it and sold a politician
that was laundering money a fake lottery number. He even showed him the draw.
He did it in a fake TV studio. Some balls on that guy!
Straight. [Gutiérrez] And there's one
more. They call him the
boyfriend. He keeps begging for
coins to call his girl. They say he actually killed her
and he's not talking to anyone. Dinosaurs can't be t
amed, and
they don't lose their old
habits. Gutiérrez, keep me
informed on those guys. [journalist] You
weren't in a band. You had help from the police,
you bribed someone... You got help from
outside, didn't you? Hold on. I told you
this wasn't an interview. You keep asking me questions and
I haven't even told you the
story. [chuckles] It's a story. [typing] Always reading a book, huh? Well, since there's no TV
or other entertainment. Right. Come here,
I'll entertain you a while. [mysterious mu
sic] [cell opens] [cell opens] What's this place?
Where are we? Here. Open the door. What's the matter, man?
Is there a problem? Open it! [ominous music] [door opens] Go inside. Turn the light
on there on the right. Pass me the blue notebook
that's over there. Why do you look
so freaked out, man? Don't say anything. This place gives me the creeps. What? Are you
afraid of the rats? No! What do you mean rats? This is where they used to
bring the insurgents. This place is never opened. The last tim
e was
about five years ago when the doctor and I came
to fill in some forms. And we could hear the noises. - What noises?
- Noises! I don't know. The old prisoners say the kids
were dragged in here and never seen again. The kids would scream. This? They're for common prisoners. Like me. You? There's nothing
common about you. [ominous music] [whistling sound] [Vulcano] Group jailbreaks in
Devoto are hard to keep a
secret. That's why almost
none are successful. And we were successful because
we ke
pt that jailbreak top
secret. You met these people because
they all went to the hospital,
right? - They're not in your band.
- No. Were they all people
you could trust? No. That was the hardest part.
We didn't know each other. It's our only chance.
Theirs and ours. We're gonna have to
trust each other. How do we do that? We just do it. I don't know. What about the noises? Don't be chicken... If no one heard the screams
during the dictatorship... I think we'll be fine. That place has very bad vib
es.
I don't like it one bit. A lot of people went in
and never came out. The judges aren't
as superstitious as you. That's why they gave you
a 13-year sentence. The place is empty. No one goes there.
And we can work at night. I've never heard of a group
jailbreak that was successful. - So?
- I'm just saying. We can use stuff
from the hospital. The stethoscope. If everyone else agrees,
I have no choice but to accept. Otherwise they'll be suspicious
of me if there's every any
doubt. And knowing ho
w you guys work... We can hear the vibrations
through the walls to see if anyone's coming. We have to see what happens
during the inspection. It's in about 60 days, right? Trust me! No, the tunnel wouldn't
be in the yard. It would be in the cell
that Vulcano found. We can work just fine there. A judge can sentence you
to as many years as he wants. But if you get a
dead guy against you he'll haunt you
for all eternity. Well, what do you recommend? I recommend that you
be more respectful. So we wa
it for the next
inspection and start working. And of course, this
doesn't leave this room. Look, I don't need you
to tell me what to do. You'd better worry about the
guys that have no experience. Are you saying I
don't have experience? No, I don't mean you. Before you did your first
supermarket hold up - I was already in the business.
- Why don't you listen? - I didn't mean you.
- And with all my experience, I talked about it. Who did you tell? And when? You guys. Just now. [laughs] Great! I'm s
erious. Bull! From now on, we're all serious. [thud] [thud] [thud] [thud] Not my face. We don't want to have to
answer any questions. Is that clear? Any questions? Yeah. If we have to do it to
Bull, who's gonna hit him? You. Hey, Bull! Don't mess around. You better not get out of line
or I'll have to give you a
beating. A kiss on my wiener is
what you're gonna give me. Fag! You want some mate? [clapping] Little did we know that later on
the information would get leaked and there would be
an insp
ection. But I'll tell you
about that later. Now, you know, part of the plan
was to wait for the inspection. [lighter clicks] I can open that
lock with a wire. We're not going to be
opening the lock every night. After a week it'll break
and the shit will hit the fan. Well, get me the key and
I'll make you a copy in a day. Oh, right! I'll just go to the
director's office, ask him for the key, and make
a copy for everyone, right? I know. You know... I got here, because one thing
just led to the oth
er, you know? I never pictured
myself as a criminal. My brother was the tough guy.
May he rest in peace. I was just a moron.
I didn't know anyone. And one day four guys got to me and they were about
to give it to me. They were about to screw me. And all I could think was that I'd never be able to
look my mom in the eyes again. I was gonna be a fag. But just then an
evangelist guard came in. He was Godsent, you know? So I became an evangelist. Almost no one messes with you.
People respect you. Ca
sares is an evangelist.
And he has the key. He believes.
And he'll believe me. You're going to betray him? I'm following His word. You have to take care
of the freedom He gives you. I won't be betraying him. So then? Then what? Did they screw you? [laughing] Now it's a big business. The kids leave at 14, 15
and already start selling it. You think? Of course. It's a business. The guy left everything
in good shape before he left. I agree, the team authorities
have nothing to do with it. It's not a
bout the money. But
they do make people talk, huh? The authorities? I've been a member of Boca
since I was three, you know? And you can say whatever
you want about Alberto J. [suspenseful music] [clank] It's a business, that's all.
Is it hot? Is it alright? - It's kind of blocked.
- Really? They told me and I
couldn't believe it. The guy who confronted
four police cars by himself and ran off with the dough
from the Welfare bank. Now you're a whistle blower! They always said you read a lot. That'
s bad for you.
It messes you up. [lighter clicks] [lighter clicks] You know you draw
attention to yourself. Oh, right. Yes, you do. It's like
you're in the spotlight. What did a guy like you
do to end up in here? Of course I didn't expect it. But on the other hand, I can
see your destiny clearly. Why? Because you're as inconspicuous
as a tarantula in a bowl of
milk. That's very generous of you. I wouldn't be so sure.
Nothing's free here. So now you're a
friend of the cops, you used to be a perp
now you're a watchman. The real you died
with your betrayal. And now you're
a friend of the cops. [snoring] [tense music] Come on, hurry up! Wait! This place makes me nervous.
Just wait a minute. Well, this is where we
have to work. Well? Here's where it should...
Done! [rattling] [banging] - Wait, wait, wait!
- What? You have to keep
banging the same place. Don't you see
I'm hurting my hands? - It's not working.
- Stop... Give it to me. [banging] [suspenseful music] [thud] Stop! This? Well, it
looks like we have
a few problems to solve. No, here... there's one here.
That's it! There are two left. What about this one? Screw you! Come on! Here, here, here! There, there, there! There, leave him there! Get off me!
Martian! Go get a tranquilizer! Stay still. Here, here, here! [groaning] Calm down! Easy, easy, easy! Alright, alright, alright... It's not the same to put in two
5 cent coins than a 10 cent
coin. This is the one
that's important. Because if it's a
long distance call, it'll be 4
0 minutes. And you lose proportionally,
because you don't get change. Imagine if the girl answers,
but she has a steak on the stove and she asks you to wait. - You're screwed!
- You're totally screwed! Or suppose she has to shut off
the washing machine. I don't know. You can
hang up and call her back. But you lost a sixth
of the call. Look. You never worked
in construction? Why don't you try it
with your forehead? Are you kidding me,
funny man? Why are you messing with me? What's the matter?
Wha
t do you mean? What's the matter?
That's reinforced concrete. If we don't get good tools,
we won't get through. Maybe if you use your tongue... It's my turn tonight.
I'll see about it then. I never thought you'd
back down so quick. I just hope you're right. Understood. Over and out. If we don't get through
the concrete tomorrow or the day after, we should
just forget about it. There might be two meters
of concrete... Then what? What? Are you
chickening out already? We just started!
Don't back ou
t now! You have to go
forwards, not backwards. If you move backwards,
you're screwed. Take it easy, buddy! Don't call me buddy, you moron! What the hell are we gonna do?
The floor's unbreakable! What's with all the racket
in the chicken coop? That's how things are here. Everyone wants to get
the biggest share. Share of what? Medications. Could you get me some, man? For me... not to sell. You know I always come
through for my friends. I'll get you some.
But you have to keep quiet. The strategy he
re is to
play dumb as much as possible. Who do you think
you're talking to? You don't get it. Yeah, man, we're gonna
sell some medications. What did I say? - You don't get it.
- What's the matter? It's either that, or
you're gonna die sooner. What's the matter, Panther? We all know you were
Ordoñez's snitch! Have you forgotten leaving
behind those kids from cell
block 7? A bunch of kids died
because of you. - That's not true!
- Yes, it is! What do you know?
You weren't there! Remember the kid
th
at played your girlfriend? The one they burned alive?
Whose skin fell of in chunks? He had a brother. I met him during
the Bank of Mendoza gig. He told me you were
Ordoñez's snitch. You have no idea
what's going on here. But if you find out
or someone tells you, just imagine, man... Imagine what could
happen to you. You're just a number, Panther. [groans] Son of a bitch! Vulcano... whose brother? This is old material. But the way things are going,
it's better than nothing. So how do we disinfect
it to prevent AIDS? We put this in the sterilizer. So it goes to the grill. Although diseases are the least
of our worries in here, huh? Wow! That's some piece of metal! Yes, this is a special metal
for cutting bones. But we don't use this
a lot in here, do we? Well, sometimes. Sometimes a little.
Just in case, right? Here. [ominous music] [banging] What are we gonna do
with these crappy little nails? What do you know?
This is surgical steel. It can hold 2 tons
per centimeter square. It's used
to cut bone. [banging] Let's see... it's dirt! It's dirt! It's dirt! Look! It's dirt! Laugh a little, man! It's dirt! Look how beautiful it is! Look how beautiful! [ominous music] It's dirt! [chuckling] Good morning! Good morning, doctor!
How are you? Good morning. - Good morning.
- Good morning, Dr. Medina. What's going on? Everyone's so cheerful
at the hospital today. I don't know what to believe in. Well, it's good to believe.
I think it's good. What do you believe in? In myself. In my friend
s...
I don't know. That's why you're
in a different mood? Well, we can't start
getting moody on top of it all. To make a 40 cm hole,
that we haven't even passed, we took almost a week. So we're gonna take a year. Don't be a moron, man.
It's different with dirt. It's like my dad used to say... The hard part's the top,
the rest is a piece of cake. Gentlemen... gentlemen... As you all know, tunnels are part of a set of
symbols related to initiation. Of course, of course... Jail, cave, uterus and
tu
nnel, exit... birth! Now the question is: How wide
does the tunnel have to be for a group of initiates
like us to go through? At least one meter by 80 cm. Otherwise we're gonna
get stuck after 5 m. What are we gonna do
with the dirt? It's 70 or 100 m3. How much is that? Can we fill a cell with it? We can fill one and
eat dirt for a year. We have to find a way
to get it out. Yeah, but how? How do we move it?
Where do we put it? Weren't you the one
who said we had to step up? The first problem the
re is
you chicken out like a bitch? Triple, you're just
a goddamn fag! Screw you, man! That's the problem
we have to solve. - How to move all that dirt.
- I used to work at a bakery. What does that
have to do with it? I know Gutiérrez,
he can help us. That's great, man! The bread bags...
that's good. We can store the dirt there
and move it from here. The thing is how we're
going to move so many bags without anyone realizing it. [ominous music] Good morning. - How are you doing?
- Leave it there.
Is this for the hospital? It's a deferred purchase. What? Yeah, I got the order
from a guy in cell block 5 who got the order
from another guy. Oh, so something's cooking. I don't know. Mind your own business
and get to work. I'll leave this with you, boy.
The Reds are winning. Weird that they're winning, huh? [ominous music] [man on radio] A bit higher, so I can
hear it from over there. What's the matter, man? I'm passed the wall. It's just
dirt, I can't see the basement. There's dirt because y
ou passed
the basement, you moron. Screw you! Why don't you come down here
and do it, asshole? Screw you, man!
You want a kick in the mouth? Listen to me, you son of a
bitch, I've been telling you
since yesterday that you were going to pass it. You passed it by about 2 meters.
Now you'll have to come up. I wasn't the one who
screwed up, we all did. Oh, really? I've been
telling you since yesterday. Why don't you go down there? Huh? Why don't you
go down there? What are you doing, Bull? You moron
! You moron! What are you doing?
Leave it for when we're out! Put that down, come on.
Put it down. I don't know how it didn't go
down the drain at that point. [chuckles] Go upstairs, I'll stay. It's nothing. We had to flip a coin to see
who'd tell you the story. The thing is, no one
believes prisoners. Once they put you in jail it's
like being in a meat grinder. It's true that we lie... I mean, that we're
sketchy about the truth. But it's all for the case. The case? Yeah, the case, the indictmen
t. Inside you become
your own lawyer. I don't care when people say
it's the family or society's
fault. All I know is I'm on this side. So they can say
whatever they want. Vulcano and I weren't caught
over some petty business. We have our background. How can I explain? It's like a World Cup final. There are police cars there. The cops look nervous
in their vests. All you want is to
get out of there. And you've got the
trunk full of guns. You know it's you or them. So there's not much to think
abo
ut, and you start shooting. As Vulcano says... Violence is too
valuable to waste. It's a tool of the trade. It's not his. He must have read it
in some book. False alarm. [ominous music] [banging] [banging] Basement! What is it? We're in the basement! I know you're doing
the best you can. But please, leave me out of it. Get over it, boyfriend.
We're all in the same boat. I can't talk on the phone
with my girl or they'll suspect. Who? Your girlfriend? The one who doesn't write
or call you on the p
hone? And doesn't visit? You sure are strange! According to statistics, it's highly probable that
there will be an inspection. If they catch us, we're screwed! You and Bull's
sentences won't change. But what about the rest of us? Were any of you born
knowing how to do it? No one here's an engineer or
an excavation technician. I'd prefer to take care of
my own destiny. If we made it to here,
we have to finish it. I don't care much for you guys, but I don't wanna
rot in here, either. So let's just
do it.
There's no other way. A round of amphetamines
for everyone. So then my friend
started getting suspicious. So then he started
following her and he found out
that the chick was a whore, a real whore... Stop, Bull! Damn it!
You're throwing dirt on me! Who's throwing
dirt on you, moron? You! It's caving in! Hold it! Tell him, man! Yeah!
Martian! Martian! The tunnel's caving in,
Martian! It's caving in! It's caving in! Screw you, Martian!
The tunnel's caving in! Hold it! Hold it, man! Yeah! T
hat's what I'm doing,
damn it! [dramatic music] Listen... I don't like
this situation one bit. Not now, I'm doing something
else, take your hand off. It has to do with Panther. Will you stop it?
I'm doing this now. Not now. We'll talk later. Good morning, officer. Hello. Did you see the doctor
around here? No, he's not here. I was just going
to see if he's in his office because I had to
ask him for a few things. Follow me. [clinking] Write down 6 boxes
of these. Anything else? Ibuprofen... Alrig
ht, alright... This is a mess! It keeps getting fuller. They should buy
more furniture then. Buy? [scoffs] You want new clothes, too? Have a smoke. How are things here? Fine. Some behave bad,
some behave good. I'll raise you. Are you sure about that? Yeah, it's the
second time today. They never talked so much. You think he knows something? He doesn't need to know anything
to screw us. No, he doesn't know anything. If he knew anything, he would
have come to negotiate. It's on you. This is it. Wha
t the hell do we do
if he finds out? Straight. What are you doing, moron?
That's not fair. Hey kid, just play.
What's wrong with you? Vulcano, if he finds out
we'll beat him up. No, let's wait
till he negotiates. So that'll give us some time. I don't know,
that's my opinion. Then listen to him,
they're both scum. For now that's what we'll do, But we'll keep
our eyes wide open, OK? I'm in. I'm in, too. OK, I'm in. Oh, that's very good! So what have you got there? [laughing] This is for us, this i
s for you! Give it back to him! Why weren't you
paying attention? He was thinking
about his girlfriend. I'll keep the lighter. He had the cards, man! What do you want?
I didn't have anything. You're an idiot! Come on, cool it, man! You should come by at night. You think? What time? After one. The guys start walking. Alright. [door creaks] Do you need anything, sir? Bring Araujo.
His lawyer is looking for him. I think I just saw him
around there. Where? - Over there.
- No, he's not there. He isn'
t?
OK, I'll go get him. - Officer.
- What is it? Listen... maybe it's not
the right time. But look what I found.
It's a porno magazine. [clicking] [light bulb buzzing] Boyfriend... If they do an inspection
we're all going to jail. I always say,
things are out of control here. I don't know how these things
get here, you know? Boyfriend, just act normal
with the lawyer, OK? If you want you can take it. What about the one
I asked about? I think I saw him
in that bed, sir. What's going on?
Turn on t
he lights. That's not necessary, sir.
Look where he is! He got wasted again. Well, it figures, with
all the crap these guys drink. Fine, leave him there. I'll report that
he's feeling sick. [scoffs] [suspenseful music] [laughs] When you open a portal, you never know exactly
where it leads. Listen, Boyfriend... It's like the wormholes
in space time. Can you imagine if that existed
on a nanotechnological level? Or on a neuronal level? I saw the sign. They let me know. Hermes Trismegistus
agrees wi
th Carl Sagan in his Corpus Hermeticum
on the definition of chance. I never would have gotten that
in a million years! Go to sleep, Boyfriend. When I get the sign,
I'll let you know. [suspenseful music] [echoing voice] [screams] [screaming] What's the matter? What is it? - What's wrong?
- A thing! A thing! - What are you talking about?
- A thing! A thing! [gasping] A thing! Shut up, damn it!
Everyone can hear you! Shut up! Shut up! Easy, easy. [gasping] Calm down. Calm down. [shushing] - What ha
ppened?
- There's no oxygen down there. [suspenseful music] [hissing] [heavy breathing] Put the string away. Come here and help me, Vulcano. Wouldn't you prefer
me to call Boyfriend? No, you come here.
I want to talk to you. Pass me that. Listen carefully, I don't
want to be misinterpreted. I treat you guys as best I can
considering the circumstances. And I always consider that
without your help this so-called hospital
wouldn't work for a minute. That's why I play dumb with
the medications thing
. What do you mean? I play dumb, but I'm not. As long as things
don't get out of hand, I don't mess with you. But lately I've noticed some
instruments have disappeared. Well, what do you expect, sir?
This is a mess. People pass by and there's
no way to control it. Wait, let me finish. You know I just come for a few
hours, but believe it or not, I have pretty strict control
over what's in this room. And the truth is some strange
things have been going on. For example, all the oxygen
was used up i
n one week. That's was when
the Martian had a fit. I don't want any excuses
or explanations. I don't want to know
anything about it. I'm letting you know! Because I'm no tight ass, but
at some point I'll have to be. So what I'm saying
is to be very careful because it's
about to get out of hand. Did I make myself clear? Perfectly. I promise
there will be no more mistakes. But as I said, this is a mess!
People pass by here all the
time. We're working beyond
our capacity here, OK? It's a good thing
that two
are being discharged tomorrow. One is your friend the Panther. What about the other one? The Boyfriend. [light bulb buzzing] - Does it fit?
- Yes. Pass me something to get down.
It's full of rocks here. It must be from an old
excavation. There it is. Here it goes. [eerie noises] [gasping] What I say is that
we should keep working. We have to keep doing our thing. Whose do you think
those bones are? Well, they belong to
more than one person. There's more
than one skeleton there. They mu
st be two
or three bodies. - That's all.
- It's not all. Didn't you hear the Martian
and Bull found more bones? There's more. - An ossuary.
- A what? An ossuary. A mass grave. Dead people piled up
on top of each other. From the dictatorship. They're people who disappeared
during the dictatorship. [Correntino] How do you know? Didn't you hear
old Vilche's stories? He's the oldest guy
in this prison. He used to tell those stories. Half of them are lies. The old man says they brought the people who
disappeared into those cells. He was right about that. That's why no one
wants to go down there. No one goes there. Some people say they hear
horrible screams at night. And the underground
cells are closed. That place is full of pain. Full of the fear of people who
knew what would happen to them. And it happened. We have to go through there. They're dead.
What can they do to us? Bull's right. We have to go
through there any way we can. What if the dead
don't let us through? Yes... The initiated
must go
through the realm of the dead before they can
go into the light. And the dead may be in favor
or against it. We have to do something.
I don't know. A ritual.
Ask for permission. I know a ceremony. I saw an old lady do it to go through a field she said
was full slaughtered Indians'
spirits. I'll do it. But Vulcano has to come with me,
because we both found the bones. Listen, let's cut it out with
this nonsense... No, he's right. I have to go. What? You don't believe me? It's just that th
e problem
there wasn't with the dead. It was with the living. [writing] [sniffles] When were you gonna tell us? No, man,
I'm not hiding anything. I wasn't gonna screw you over.
I didn't know how to tell you. Oh, you were gonna tell me. You're being discharged tomorrow
and you were gonna tell me. - Come here. Come here.
- No, wait. Shut up! I don't wanna do this,
but it's you or us. We can't let you go. Wait, there's gotta be
another way. There isn't any, believe me.
And be quiet. Don't be an ass
hole, Vulcano,
I won't say a word. Don't kill me.
Who's gonna kill you, you moron? We're gonna make you stay here. So what? You're gonna stab me? - Yeah!
- I don't know what's worse! It's the only way. If you break a leg,
you won't be able to go down. No, wait, wait! Do it where
it's not so dangerous! It'll be just like before, if
you didn't die then, you won't
die now. Come on, take it easy.
Come on. You'll use that? At least get
a scalpel, you son of a bitch! The knife's alright.
Just take it
like a man. No, wait! Wait!
Sterilize it! Come on! Come on! Go get
something to sterilize it! Do you want us
to have it blessed, too? Assholes!
You're a bunch of assholes! Come on! [gasping] Will it hurt? Well, yeah! And you can't scream
or they'll see what's going on. Just take it like a man. [muffled scream] What's the matter? Can't you do it? I can't. This guy's never done
anything to me. And he's totally helpless. Let me. Wait! Give it to me, damn it! Give it to me. Give it to me. [suspensef
ul music] Come on, take it like a man. [groans] [muffled] Son of a bitch! [muffled scream] Guard! Guard! He got the Boyfriend! Look what he did
to the Boyfriend! - You son of a bitch!
- Take him away! You watchmen! You snitches!
It was you! The guy's out of control, sir! I ask permission from those who
come here and those who leave. I ask permission
from those who guide us. I ask permission
from those who push us. I light this white candle to guide the souls of the dead
towards the light. I lig
ht this red candle to protect this offering. So the bad spirits
don't devour it. So it may feed the souls
traveling towards the light. Listen, man, I'm an agnostic.
I don't believe in anything. It doesn't matter,
because now you'll believe. Now you have to believe. Because you're the one who
most needs to get out of here. And believe it or not, the wish
is very strong in your heart. And God knows that. So you make the offering,
and I'll say the words. [Quechuan prayer] Guys, we brought you some
corn. We also brought some yerba mate. To ask for permission,
so you'll let us pass. We brought tobacco. And we also brought alcohol. But please, let us out. Don't let us stay here
in this shit hole. Help us get out. Help us. Help me. [echoing voices] I know you went through
something horrible, that no one deserves. If you let us out, I promise
I'll tell the whole world that you're here. I'm no saint.
But I keep my promises. Let us out. [low rumble] [sobs] I also heard a nurse say
there was a de
livery room where they would take the
prisoners that were pregnant. [chuckles] You wouldn't believe
everything I heard. But of course,
since no one asks the convicts, there are no testimonies. But you ask the prisoners
who were around at that time. They'll tell you how
they heard the screaming. I don't know how many of us
will reach old age. But anyway,
this is the life we chose. I never shot at anyone that was
unarmed and without a uniform. We've got codes. This is what we do. Some guys change
their way of life. But most keep at it. And things get hard
when you've got a girl. You hear the kids ask questions. And then you know they'll
grow up with all that hate. [sighs] I don't think
I'll reach old age. That's why I'd like someone
to tell what we went through. No, wait, wait, wait! This isn't about the story.
Don't write it. [footsteps approaching] [phone ringing] The move is all set,
so let's hurry. But... wait... tell me... Did you have any doubts? I couldn't afford
to think for one
minute that we wouldn't escape. But the truth is... we had millions
of chances to fail. Someone came here
to get 50 bread bags. What do they want
50 bread bags for? Who was it?
I won't tell you that. Besides, it was a
deferred purchase. It was one guy who
ordered it from another guy, who ordered it from someone
else, So that's how you lose
track. Get it? Bread bags. Lots of bags.
Let's keep quiet. Mum's the word. I think it was for an escape.
By what I could smell, you know? Well, jailbreak
plan
s never work here. Like now!
Information always gets leaked. It's true! There's always someone who
let's the cat out of the bag. [suspenseful music] [distant mumble] They're in the inner hall. - On our side?
- No. There was an inspection
in cell block 5 yesterday. - It wasn't scheduled?
- No. There's been a leak. Yes. [sighs] [suspenseful music] Come. Come with me. What's the matter?
Why are you bringing me here? [door slams] Vulcano! Long time no see! Don't you come by here anymore? You just se
nd over
your employees. I don't get out much lately. Plus, I was never very sociable. There are rumors about
what's going on at the hospital. So? So, the jail's all stirred up. Lots of inspections,
lots of coming and going. And when you start asking, everything leads you
to the hospital, Vulcano. Then I guess you shouldn't ask. I mean... with all due respect. This coming and going
is not good for business. At this point,
my only business is to survive. And as far away
from here as I can. I suspe
ct no one's
stopping you at this point. It's like you're protected by
very powerful people. I've never been a snitch. I've never talked
to the jail authorities. There are more powerful things
in life than the authorities. I don't know what you mean. You're doing it alone. And we don't care about that. But we do care that
you know we have nothing to do with what happens to
the guys at the hospital... whether it be good or bad. Thank you, guys. But I still don't get
what you're talking about. The
things in the
underground section of this jail don't seem to be at peace. You guys are just a means. Don't forget that. [echoes] [groans] Bull... What's going on? We took an oxygen tube
to the operation room. Didn't I tell you
not to take anything? If we piss the doctor off,
we're screwed! What do you
want us to do, Vulcano? It's impossible
to breathe down there! Last night Triple fainted. OK, let's do this: Get
the tube that's in the cell, erase the poison label
and bring it here. What if someo
ne gets killed? No, it's empty. Where's "I don't know"? What do you want him for? - For stalling.
- He's lying down. Let's see if we can
get him to do a task that will justify his talent
for screwing people over. Go on.
And move the other thing. What is it? Listen. We have to do
something about the leaks. - The guards are going crazy.
- I didn't say anything. No, I know it wasn't you. I don't think
it was any of the boys. But did you get
Gutiérrez off track? What did you tell him? I told him the
order
was for someone else. And that he had gotten
the order from another guy. To throw him off the scent. People suspect
a jailbreak is being planned so we're going to
have to back up that story. Go on, go back to Gutiérrez. Tell him that
a jailbreak's being planned but send him
to cell block 5 or 7. Will you do that? Don't worry. Everything's set. How much more do you think
we need to go to get outside? Beats me. We've dug out 6 meters. From this side it looks like 10.
But the walls are trick
y. I'm not sure. We don't have much time. There's just a little more to
go, but we can get caught any
time now. So? So we have to get
the hell out of here, Bull! We have to prepare
the security. The stick they have there. The people shouldn't leave
there with any dirt on them. And Triple shouldn't
go by himself. No, no. You talk to Triple.
He's a son of a bitch. Vulcano... believe. Have faith. We're almost out. Almost. [dog panting] So he starts to check it out,
because he starts to suspect. Sin
ce the chick brings up
one thing and then another - and doesn't want to tell
him... - [clinking] [clicking] - He catches her--
- [clinking] You're making too much
of a racket, Boyfriend! - I know, you moron! I have to!
- Who are you calling a moron? I'm calling you a moron,
because you're a moron! I won't allow that!
Have some respect! I don't disrespect you!
Shut up, you jackass. Shut up, you pussy!
You're just a pussy! You son of a bitch!
You let them control you! Screw you, you asshole! I'm g
oing to kill you! Wait! Wait! [light bulb buzzes] The first one out is Vulcano. He sticks to the wall. And then we all leave
one by one. - And we stay against the wall.
- Until the last one's out. - And then what?
- I don't know. We all come out
hugging each other. Alright, alright.
That's what we'll do. But now we're near the end
and we can't fall behind. We have to be
more alert than ever. You have to admit
that Vulcano is very consistent. He keeps nagging
till the last minute. Why don't you
s
hut the hell up, man? What I have to say is... honestly, at first I didn't
believe this would work at all. But now that we know each other,
I know we're a bunch of
assholes. And thank you. Because we all know that
I'm the toughest one here. That if I don't get out,
I'm a goner. And all of you
have stuck beside me. So when we're out,
we'll meet again. Me, too. I feel honored to be
a part of this with all of you. I want to say that the fact that
we're working together for
freedom is going to creat
e
this fellowship between us... Will you cut it out, Martian? Even if we all
go our separate ways, man! This is like a rebirth! That's why
we'll be like brothers. OK, let's cut the crap
and go out and do it. Come on. - This is about to cave in, man.
- What? It's caving in... - Is it caving in?
- No. - Tell me it's not.
- There... Those are rocks
falling on me, man. Let's see, lift it a bit. - Can you?
- Yes. - Can you?
- Yes! There it is... There it is! Wait... Can you feel it?
Yes, that's a foo
tstep! It's a footstep! - Can you hear it?
- No. You don't? Then what did I hear? There! There you can hear it. Give me some more light.
Hold it here. I can't breathe!
Damn it! Neither can I. There we go...
There we go! Where do you think
you're going dressed like that? To a party? They're gonna lock
you back up if you wear that. [indistinct chatter] [light bulb buzzing] [inaudible] Come on, man! Come on, hurry up!
It's gonna be dawn soon! - What? Already?
- Well, yeah! Wait, wait, wait, Bull.
T
hen we can't leave. No, no, no! Come on!
Come on! Let's get out! Vulcano, he's right. We've got about
two hours of work left here. We can't do it today. Fine. Fine. You're right.
You're right. Come on! Come on! Up! Up! Let's go! Let's go! [loud rumble] [banging] Hallowed be Thy name,
Thy kingdom come. [thudding] Thy will be done,
on earth as it is in heaven. Lead us not into temptation
and deliver us from evil. - Amen!
- Fuck. Come on, Bull! Get up! We'll fix it tomorrow! No, tomorrow we won't b
e here!
Come on! What do you mean, Vulcano? I mean we're leaving
tonight or never! Forget it. It's over. Come on, man! Move, damn it!
We're leaving tonight, man! [breathing heavily] Come on! Come on! Come on! Let's go! Come on, damn it! Let's go. [suspenseful music] Help me here! He got
his head cracked open! Put him there,
I'll get someone to help me. No! No! Come here!
Take him. There's blood everywhere!
It's disgusting! Here. Take him. Take him. Everything's really
quiet, isn't it? What's goi
ng on at this
time of night, man? I was just about to leave. This moron here... Go get the others to help! Go! Hurry up, he's bleeding
all over the place! Hold that there or
he'll bleed to death. There! There! What the hell is
going on, damn it? [banging] Vulcano, there's a problem
in the nurse's office. No, no, no. I've gotta
get out of here, Bull! I'll get the rest!
Maybe we'll make it! Come on! The others better show up!
What's going on here, man? It's just that there
was an inspection. That'
s why it's like this.
Because there was an inspection. Where is everyone? Where is everyone?
Turn on the lights now! [ominous music] Come on, man,
let's get out of here! - What's the matter? - Let's get
out of here! Come on! [tense music] What are you doing, you moron?
They're escaping! They escaped!
Let me go! Guard! Guard! OK, OK, OK... Come on! Let's go! [banging] There we go! There we go. Hey man!
We've gotta get out of here! [grunting] Wait. Be careful
they don't see you! What do I care? Th
ey can kill me here!
They can shoot me here! Come on, man!
Let's go! [grunts] Let's get the hell out of here! Your shoes! Your shoes! Come on! Let's go! Come on, Boyfriend! Come on, Boyfriend!
Get in there! Let's go! Let's go! Don't look back! Don't look! [dog barking] We made it, man! We made it, Bull!
We're going back! Yes! OK, it's getting late. Wait, wait! What happened to the rest? [Vulcano] The guard who
alerted the others got to the
last railing and called the
armed guards. But ther
e was
no one there. He called out for half an
hour but no one answered
him. So the guys got out on the
street without getting
caught. [dog barking] I have to leave one round free
because sometimes it gets stuck. Alright, but back to what
we were talking about... So you can say you
didn't keep your promise. You broke the codes. Did you bring a gun? - Was I supposed to bring one?
- Did you or didn't you? Yes. I brought it just in case. That's good. You never know. Yeah, I broke the codes. I
could give you excuses
or explanations... but they're no good.
They'd ruin the story. So think whatever you want. Alright, we don't
have much time. Should we leave you at
the station or in the capital? [rattling] Then... It's a story. I called you so it would be one. I can't have a debt forever
to my friends under the jail. Now I hope the dead help you. I already told you
I don't believe in this stuff. I didn't believe it, either,
but here we are. [journalist] Now I'm going
to have to see who t
hey were. And what happened. So you passed it on to me. [chuckles] Or rather, them. [ominous music] [journalist] I contacted some
human rights organizations to tell them about
this finding. According to the data, they weren't the kind of
disappeared people we
thought, people from political
organizations. The bodies could have
belonged to those who died in the riot on March 14,
1978, in the middle of the
dictatorship. [typing] The so-called riot of the
mattresses in cell block 7
was the biggest tragedy in a
jail in this country to this
day. According to
the authorities back then 61 people died
and 85 were hurt. But according to
current investigations, some bodies were never found
among the wreckage of the
riot. The journalist Ricardo
Ragendorfer made a complaint to
Human Rights Organizations. The fugitive who inspired the
character of Vulcano, died
months after to escape from jail, in a
confrontation with the police. During production of this
film, gave his
testimony another leader of the
escape, currently free: Just imagine! It was very
shocking to find human bones... skulls, arms...
And here I am. If we didn't reach our goal,
we would end up like them, so we started to panic. TUNNEL OF BONES TUNNEL OF BONES
A film by Nacho Garassino We got together down there and we promised if they'd let us
pass through where they rested, one day we would tell
where those bones were. And we gave them offerings. We brought them cigarettes,
yerba mate... We weren'
t paying them, we were
asking them to let us through because we were trespassing
on their territory. So at one point in our lives
we'd repay them for that favor for letting us
pass through there. So now after so many years, you're giving me the chance to
say: "Guys, the bones are here". So I repaid my debt
after so many years. [ominous music]
