MXGP Champ ➡️ SX Rookie | Jorge Prado Supercross All-Access

What happens when a world-champion motocross rider travels across the globe to take on a totally new discipline of racing, testing themselves against a stacked lineup of champions? The Supercross world found out when Jorge Prado, the 2023 MXGP World Champ, traded the outdoor tracks of the global MXGP Championship for the bright lights of American stadiums. Jorge Prado's journey to the United States to try his hand in the AMA Supercross Championship was more than just a leap into the unknown; it was a quest to test his skills against a new frontier of competition and live out a lifelong dream. The reigning 2023 MXGP World Champion was after fresh challenges, and the American SX tracks beckoned with the promise of fierce rivalries, raucous crowds and unforgiving terrain. Prado has been riding since he could walk and has always dreamed of racing in America, watching Supercross in his early years in Spain. Despite the challenges involved in transitioning from MXGP to Supercross - and the risk of injury in a crucial period before his 2024 MXGP title defense - Jorge, his team, and family were all in for this new adventure. In January, 23-year-old Prado entered a highly competitive field in the 450SX class and experienced the ups and downs of the sport in a rapidly condensed time. From qualifying for the Main event in all four races, to facing tumultuous race conditions in back-to-back mud races in San Francisco and San Diego unlike much the sport has seen before, to his first Triple crown, winning a heat race and more. Go behind the scenes with an all-access look as Jorge Prado chases his Supercross dream in Jorge Prado: Under the Lights. ______ Experience the world of Red Bull Motorsports like you have never seen it before. We all want to win, right? So as an MXGP champion, you don't want to go out there and be last. This is a lifetime dream of his, growing up in Spain. He always wanted to race A1. He is the current World Champion and so there's a lot of risk involved, especially for him. Supercross is all new. Welcome to your opening round press conference for AMA Supercross. It's a situation, maybe a tiny bit different. Just as in he's coming into the big boys right away. Dead last, completely. You have the MXGP
World Championship, which has 20 rounds in every continent. A two day format, three motos, but three points for each class. And then you have the AMA Supercross where you have 17 rounds, which is inside baseball and football stadiums. And there is nothing like that anywhere else in the world. His goal was to be MXGP world champion. He achieved his goal, it is like a new target. Supercross is fast twitch. Everything happens in 2 seconds. Your brain's firing five times faster than anything you do
on the MXGP. When you race full time in Europe and you ask me to come over and do some racing. They know the risks. I know the risk. The 450 class, which is probably the deepest we've ever seen. They've all prepared for this their entire life, years, decades. And he just showed up. If you were to compare it to stick and ball, what's the comparison? Jordan trying to go play baseball. It didn't work out that well. JUNIOR WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS 2011 I win, and I'm very happy. So, Supercross. I really
wanted to come to the US. I really wanted to come here and I want to know what I want to do in the future. So much hard work to get that title. It's almost like a present, yeah, to be able to race here. ANAHEIM 1 PRESS DAY ONE DAY BEFORE OPENING ROUND I know it's my birthday. When I woke up I... I almost didn't think about it was my birthday. I was so focused about going in and spinning laps around this track that I almost forget about it. But it's nice, I mean, you normally try to do the things
you like on your birthday and I couldn't ask to be in a better place. He was always with me when he was just a baby, but very close to me, always together. And he was always a very happy boy. It's Jorge’s birthday today and we are going to surprise him with a cake. So I hope we can enjoy. He always like to enjoy life, whatever. Just with a bike in between the legs. Cumpleaños feliz. Cumpleaños feliz. I mean, we start riding together just for fun. like two friends, and then we start racing. The
results were good. We keep going. Was not like a plan we did, to be a racer. So the way we start was a little bit like, okay, we go, we try, nothing serious, okay, we going to buy a new bike, okay but just to, you know, to ride close to our home. Wish you birthday dude. Huh, big weekend! -Yeah -Birthday, first Supercross. Many things together. You gotta just hit the whoops, do the jumps. I don't know how they convince me they did it and that's why he has started in Motocross. Twenty-three. I'm g
etting old. I'm very happy in a point of my life right now. Everything, it's good. You know, there is a reason to smile. So, it's cool. Hi Kyle... What... I'm riding Group B tomorrow? It was full, of what? …of seeded riders. Oh, yeah, it's true. I'm a champion. Oh, my goodness. I need to go with a rough track. All right, see you tomorrow, bye, bye. What did you just find out? B practice tomorrow. Not good. I would like to race in A. JORGE'S FIRST SUPERCROSS PRACTICE 81 DAYS BEFORE ANAHEIM 1 He c
ame straight to 450. Everybody in Europe, of course, with pressure on him to take it easy. Are you sure you want to do this? You know, with the risk involved, we need you to defend your world title. At the same time for our factory and for European team. If you block the riders from following his dreams, then you're not going to get the best out of him long term, you know? And if you were his team manager in Europe, would you have allowed this? I reluctantly probably would, yeah. It's difficult
month, right, just to try and come over ride Supercross and then even race it. It takes a lot of courage, I think not only from the rider, but also the people all around. For sure our goal is the MXGP title for next year, so he needs to race but he don't need to crash for sure. It is a big risk to race Supercross, but you need to, you need to enjoy, you know, not do crazy things, just racing and have fun. Sure his dream is still here that he always say one day I would like to go racing in Americ
a. But before I go racing America, I want to try. So maybe we'll see what the future is. Is it your ultimate dream to race here and win a Supercross championship? If I, if after race day, I can say, okay, I like it, I enjoyed a lot riding and racing Supercross, then yes. Otherwise I need to go back to Europe and keep winning titles there. ANAHEIM 1 SUPERCROSS AMA SUPERCROSS ROUND 1 You're feeling good? Almost ready. Not much to say. See how it feels. Yesterday, I had a good day and press day. I'
m confident and can’t wait to go ride. The thing I like the most, so let's enjoy the day. First training is today. I'm just waiting to kiss him before leaving. I stay here. I must say now I'm more used to Motocross or Supercross. I mean, Supercross is something new for me, but it is still dangerous? I don't see the races. I don't watch them neither. If I'm alone at home, I cannot follow an internet, so I'm just put everything off and just have my telephone close to me. If I have a call, if somet
hing happens, or just to know that everything was good. ANAHEIM 1 PRACTICE Obviously, Prado has aspirations of conquering Supercross, but more than anything, he's just a fan of Supercross. I think that he has a point to prove. I think that he wants to put that experience and what he's learned to the test, and I think that he wants to make an impact on the American industry. When Jorge shows an interest about motorcycles was really nice for me because before I was riding almost alone every weeken
d, and then I have a small kid. It's more like a friend, who can share together, like the passion for riding motorcycles. Just waiting for the night show, learning a little bit, looking to track, because now we go straight without sighting lap. So, a little bit different, I'm used to doing to do a sighting lap before racing. Okay, also my wife was not really positive about that. You know, she was really scared. Still now, she's really scared. I think I don't know how many times she watch a race
of Jorge, I think never. He's here for the first three races before he goes back to Europe to defend his crown. This is a lifetime dream of his, growing up in Spain. He always wanted to race A1. He's about to now. Great start Jett Lawrence. The MXGP world champion in his first Supercross race here at Monster Energy AMA Supercross is in a transfer position. He showed great speed in practice qualifying. He has thought about this, dreamt about this since he was a young child and started racing bike
s. ANAHEIM 1 HEAT FINISH 8TH Kind of good feeling, but okay. -Why? -A bit tired. Now, it's dark-- It is the whole feeling, you know... Welcome to America. For sure, it feels different. Once you get to the starting gate and see all the fans see everybody cheering, that for sure will make you feel something in the summer. This is Anaheim, let's do it. 2024 style blasting out the inside, Jorge Prado, the MXGP world champion runs in eighth in his first Supercross race in the US. ANAHEIM 1 FINISH POS
ITION 13TH You're so good right at the very end. But I lost everything in the whoops. -Yes, that's-- -My rhythm, you know, because we never practice this, so I can't. Like, I never did these kind of whoops. They were round, I could hit them, but I just can't. Also, like the jumping, you would like, go into the face of one and then stop you. -Yeah. -Yeah. That's why they're so hard, they are round. But here, they're so weird. It's like a double whoop. -Like, two whoops for one. -Oh, yeah. Especia
lly when you're jumping, it's like... P-13, it's a good result, but I would like to feel better while racing. You take the best riders in Europe and you put them on a track with no whoops and they can piece it together. They all have talent, they can jump, they have technique. The whoops ruins everything for a rider. And so for him to come here, piece together the rest of track, not surprised. But to have to learn those things and the only way you learn them is to go through them like 5000 times
and his calendar didn't even allow that. The biggest thing for a European rider coming into Supercross is the fact that there is no Supercross in Europe. For the most part, these riders aren't practicing on a Supercross track at all, because they can't. There are just no options. He comes here with such an enormous amount of skill that I think you just sharpen it. Like, little things you don't think about that he's up against, you know, both hands be full of excuses that he can make pretty easi
ly here. All right, huh? What do you say? Very good! Tired, right? As it should be. If I'm tired after yesterday... Yeah, yeah, yeah, well, normal. Let's go over there? Do you have something to drink here? No, not here, if you want, over there. You were very consistent during all laps. You went really well through this one now, huh? Really well. But for example, Justin, now struggled completely. It might be raining this weekend. All of us assume you're in MXGP you're a mud rider. How do you thin
k the mud would play into your favor or not play into your favor? Well, I hope it doesn't rain. I'm not a real mud rider, but obviously, if I get a good start, it's a good advantage in the mud too. Pretty ugly scenes right here. It is going to be a tough night ahead. It is cold and wet. The schedule, Ricky today has been massaged a couple of times to deal with these very challenging conditions. P-12. I couldn't get a good lap. Yeah, I know. I understand. I could go down much. You did good. If I
had to pick anyone to win, I think I'd pick you. I don't understand why you guys think Europeans should be, like, so good in the mud. It's not like we have mud every time. And this is Supercross... But you ride a lot more conditions than we did. -Yeah. -Yeah. I can't remember the track. That ain't good. I can't remember it when it's high or low. That's not good. I was worried about the ruts, you know, not about-- I didn't care if it was high or low, I just was like, "Alright, if I can just go ki
nd of straight, it was okay for me." I think this is the first and only time that I could give Jorge Prado pointers. Last weekend, I had the same. When I went to the Heat race and I put my bike behind the gate, I'm like, "What am I doing here?" And when I was riding again, I'm like, "What am I doing here again?" We just did eight minutes of track. Like, when I wanted to put a fast lap, the session was already done. It's interesting, another experience, and... let's have some fun in the mud. This
is an equalizer condition for Jorge Prado. He has spent a ton of time in the MXGP series, racing in these type of elements. Lawrence with the great start, but leaves the gate way open for Jorge Prado. Wow, look at this. This guy is checking out and we talked about it all day long, 5.7 seconds ahead of the defending Supercross champion. He just looks cool, calm, and collected. Look at this. This is for the win. The MXGP world champion is a heat winner. SAN FRANCISCO/HEAT FINISH 1ST Look at it, h
e won a heat race in his second ever Supercross. That's not normal. He hasn't even learned how to lose in this little experiment. I'm not a really mud specialist, but it looks like I come to the U.S., and I handle the mud very well, so. No super, super happy. My second ever heat race and already I win. I know conditions are tough, but I know I missed that when I was in Anaheim. So I'm like, hey, I counted as doing a win in a heat race here, Supercross. I couldn’t expect this. So cool, so cool. Y
ou've been thinking about this, I know, for a long time. Congratulations Jorge. Thank you. Let's go for the main event. I clicked better than last weekend. World champ. Big elbows going to the first turn. I don't quit the throttle. I can't believe it. Actually. Now I start liking this more. He just shows up with, what, a month? Two months? To learn it like that, shouldn't be possible. Prado has done a couple of weeks, a handful of weeks if you want to be generous. And he's going up against the w
orld's best and doing very, very well. Here in San Francisco, it's time to bring the action. The second race in Supercross, only in the premier class, here he wins the heat race. This guy could go on to win the main event tonight. I'm not surprised, especially in these conditions. Listen, he's a three time champ, two time MX2 champ and MXGP champion of the premier class. So he's pretty capable of these results in these particular conditions. SAN FRANCISCO/FINISH POSITION 7TH Seven. -Who won, Cha
se? -Yeah. This is the worst I've ever seen in my life. Last year in New York was not this bad. Jorge looked like a fricking champ in that. The first lap I went like this! The bike was slipping away! Yea, because the seat cover is different... -We should have put on a mud cover. -Your cover? The mud cover! Yeah, but this cover is different from yours. No, but it doesn't matter, mine also slips. -Ah, wow. -Great job, dude! And what about the start? The gate dropped in 3 seconds. The girl did this
and again, with like one, two, three. And it dropped, and I was not even ready. I was like, oh! And when I go, I went sideways, I got wheelspin. I got in the rut and again wheelspin, and then-- And then two guys crash in front of you. Yeah, but when I saw that, I was not getting the start, I'm like, I don't care. Go, everybody go. I saved my goggles, I saved my tear-off. I then saw, I got the water. So I throw my tear-off and I break and everybody crashed and then I go. So I don't have problems
with my goggles. So, did you end up being the last one out there? -Dead last! -I didn't see you at all. Dead last, completely. So two round in, how have your feelings about Supercross changed? I think I like it a little bit more, especially after that heat race win. The dream is still alive, yeah. I can see myself coming here, so this is cool, yeah. The kid's work ethic is insane, and he's so dedicated and wants to win. I mean, even leading up to Anaheim, he was asking me to ride on New Year's
Day and on Christmas Day like nothing else mattered to him but putting in the work to put himself in that best position he can to get the result he wants. I think he just wants to challenge and I think that's what makes champions different. You want that next challenge. You want to be put to the test. I saw him early in one of his first few days. I was like, wow, talent, Let's see how this goes. And the dial just turned up every day. And at Anaheim 1, I was like, that's a Supercross racer. So th
is week I rode just twice because I have press day on Friday and then racing on Saturday. So I just did, I think around 140 laps. How many laps do the guys do here? I don't know, but today I'm the only one on the track right now. And some of the days too. So I finish quite late. And it's not because I'm poking or anything. I put many laps too. Yeah. Is this your last one before you head back? Maybe I need to push a little bit. -Say one more-- -One more race? It's good. I think it's cool you got
the experience and just getting your feet wet and... -It's not-- -You're holding your own. SAN DIEGO SUPERCROSS AMA SUPERCROSS ROUND 3 A lot of rumors you could say for Anaheim 2. Have you considered that? I mean, it would be cool to stay for another week. My team is waiting for me. So one side you're like, yeah, you want to stay. But you understand that our goal is to win again the title in MXGP, so you know, the big bosses decide. I didn't think about it till the last day of riding because the
n we checked the weather. And we were like, ah. It was raining, so I'm like... You see I come here for the races, and two are mud races. It’s a little pity just because I want to see my, like my progression, right? I mean, the mission, why we are here. I feel he gave us already a really good answer. Because you came here to see if you like it. Yes. And what we see, you like it a lot and you adapt. Yeah. And now, what is missing will be time for you to do more laps. Very slippery. I have your sea
t gripper. Yeah, but now with the plastics, you know... In the whoops, I lost the bike because I can't grip it. Any chance we see him at A2? I heard you guys talking about it earlier. The request is on the table. Yeah. So let's see how we go through today. The last thing he wants definitely is like two mud races out of the three. So if this is going to be super rainy today, we might see him. If it's a drive on and a good one and healthy, I think it's better time to go home. But give us a couple
of more hours to decide that one. -We are proud of you. -Thank you. It's really an impressive step coming here and racing. And I'm grateful you guys gave me the chance. -When you go home, Monday, Sunday? -Tomorrow night. -Tomorrow night? -Yeah. But I tried to convince Pit, he's here. -Oh really? -Yeah. So because A2 is around the corner, so. Yeah. And like, you haven't even really gotten a solid, like, only Anaheim 1, the last one doesn't count. I don't know about this one. That’s what I told hi
m I can’t almost see my progression if I am racing like this... I mean, hopefully by the main event tonight, hopefully it'll be decent. But yeah, it hasn't really been pretty, that's for sure. What do you think? Being here? Honestly, I'm very excited, I mean, it's really cool. I'm nervous but I also want to see you get up there, and I don't think I'll be able from here... If you get closer over there, you'll see. Yeah, I'll get closer now! But yeah, really cool! Jorge, being three-time champion.
.. Personally, the experience I've had here is super professional, it's really awesome, inside the stadium... They treat them like what they are, superstars... So the decision will be difficult and he'll have to evaluate it. Most likely... If he comes, he'll do it gladly because he's really loved! Let's get this San Diego evening going. We have another mud race on deck tonight. He reached almost everything in the World Championship, what he could reach in this short period. So there is that big
dream for him to come and ride in America. Getting down here in San Diego. Let's go. It is a very wet and tricky track. You don't win any championship on that level. If you don't have that dream like you're waking up and you have a target, you have a dream and that drives you as a rider. He comes across to me like a guy who's not necessarily chasing records by doing the same thing. This is Jorge Prado on the Triple One. He'd rather chase something new that he's never won. He just got the big one
, check the box, and immediately his eyes come here. This is his final weekend. He heads back to Spain. Go back to his day job, so to speak, and get ready for the MXGP World Championship. -What did I finish? 11th? -11th. Alright Jorge, Supercross experience complete. Is it still the dream? I still want to race more, yeah. Yeah. It's not enough what I... what I got now. So it's another experience and... I really want to win, so, yeah. We maybe come back in the future, for sure. Says a lot about a
person when they don't want to just do the same thing and stack, but they want to take on challenges that they shouldn't be able to do. And do that. ***, I hope they give me one more week. I need one more. One more. One more and I holeshot the main. One more, please. One more. And I don’t ask more. I, no. 100 percent. ROBERT JONAS KTM VICE PRESIDENT OF OFFROAD RACING I need the holeshot in the main, I need. What, do you want to play now? -Let’s try, you know... -Rock, scissor, stone. -Or you do
1, 2, 3? -Rock, scissor, stone. Or we do 1, 2, 3? Okay. So. Yeah. Where do you think he wants his future to be now, that he's done this? Just look at his smile when he's... riding the tracks over here. So I feel... I feel he decided he didn't say it, but I think he decided. The first thing I said when I came out of the main event is, "I need one more." I felt like I rode okay today. But we had a bad start, again it was hard to make out like, proud main event. So it's like a present now again, a
nother Christmas present. So I should be packing now, my bags, for Europe. I don't think he accomplished his dream. I think his dream’s bigger. I think he got a taste of the dream because you can only imagine it from across the pond. But now that he's tasted it, I'm pretty sure he's going to be locked in on coming over here full time and proving that he can do what he did over there in these buildings. During Supercross, the dream is done and now is the next step. If he comes here he tries to be
champion one day, that's for sure. What are the chances we see him here in 2025? I'm not the person who have to answer these questions. I don't know. I just can say that he is very happy. He is really enjoying Supercross riding, also racing. So we will see what he decided. What's up? How are we doing? You're doing really well, dude! I mean, don't ask for more than what you've done! Thank you very much, yeah, I think so too. The experience is being amazing! And this weekend, we have the Triple C
rown... Exactly! So three opportunities to come out on top! Thank you very much, Marc. Thanks for the call! Cheers! Ciao, ciao! -All right. -Did you get some advice? Full gas. Just full gas through the whoops. That's it. After back to back mud races tonight, we add in the Triple Crown format. Watch Prado, he said he's here to get him one holeshot. Let's see if he can do it. Here we go, race one. And no, just to the inside is Sexton. Is Jorge Prado a Supercross rider now? Yeah, at the beginning.
The beginning of Jorge Prado, Supercross rider. Prado's specialty is his starts. And he's like, I got three shots at a holeshot next week. I want to stay and do it. He almost got it here, but he is still learning lessons in Supercross. Are you a supercross racer now? I'm more... Yeah, you know, I did some passes. When people pass me, I could pass back. So I was in the fight, I was in the fight for some positions. There somewhere in the pack. Prado wants the whole shot again. Webb, Plessinger, wh
o's going to take it? Lawrence trying to get Roczen back. Ferrandis and Prado right in front of him. But yeah, I think, yeah, I'm kind of a racer now. Like a Supercross racer, I think so. Him being a three-time world champion, he's showing his cards right now is why he is the champion, that he is. Getting better, getting better. I just made a mistake. When I was just getting the flow and the rhythm and two guys got close to me. But then I throttled again, but... it's coming it’s coming. Not too
bad, already... Eighth when... bring us in... started from home. Open it on the outside... Holeshot again! Tough spot for Jorge Prado. If you want to stay safe, you want to learn, but you also want to be aggressive. And it's so easy to take that bait. And ride over your limit. You're in a nice spot in your life when you can either come here and chase a dream or stay back there and possibly be the winning this MXGP rider of all time. But to inject this into his life instead, pretty wild, pretty u
nexpected. That means it's in my head. I want to come over. I want to come over. When is this gonna come out? Because I can maybe say it. FOLLOWING ANAHEIM 2, JORGE PRADO RETURN TO EUROPE TO BEGIN PREPARATIONS FOR HIS MXGP CHAMPIONSHIP DEFENSE. AFTER FOUR ROUNDS OF SUPERCROSS, JORGE SAT 10TH OVERALL IN POINTS.
