brose and I am so excited because tonight we are celebrating you you got the Vanguard award tell us what the emotion felt like when you heard you'd be receiving that wow you know it's 30 years I've been in business um this year and to be celebrated and recognized by the NAACP was one of the highest honors I could ever receive these are my peers that they see me and feel that I was um deemed you know recognizable was extraordinary yeah and you're such an inspiration to everybody so for all the yo

ung girls that are at home right now with their image boards and looking through magazine and they want to style they want to get into the industry what's a piece of advice you'd like to give them oh wow I say you know I've never seen black and white TV I've always watched it in color even when it was a thing you know it's like use your imagination to dream with your eyes open you know I think that's the way creative see things we don't see things the way the world sees things we have to think a

head and we have to think about the possibilities I've always been a dreamer my young self is still infinitely curious I'm still on the adventure I'm just getting started so I tell those young girls that you know one day they'll be standing here and thinking about where they were 20 years later I love it and before I let you go tell us what you're wearing and how you look fantastic I'm wearing viu mahapatra one of my favorite designers do you do it all yourself still or do you have a team that h

nfinitely you okay that means enjoying the luxury to embrace who you are and take in all of life's moments like this amazing moment we're having right now and most of them actually happen in our vehicles right now the question is what self-care or luxury experience makes you feel infinitely you I love that question and I think there's several because you know I'm trying to get to this thing where I return myself to me at all aspects in all aspects of my life but I think the biggest thing is when

I'm resting and off work off the job when I'm just like no Glam no nothing in my house listening to music journaling talking to my family is where I feel like infinitely me because whether I work or not my family's like you good you all right check on that's all that matters like if I'm good as a person I feel infinitely me like if I'm working on myself praying therapy journaling that's where I feel like the most powerful infinitely me is that one of the things that inspire you for your podcast

more than that cuz what was happening in that moment in your life yeah so more than that was actually one of those responses to the 2020 unrest and the realization that like we as a people have a lot that we can do in this moment what can we actually take from the world finally putting their eyes on us and so more than that was an answer to all the brands and all the people who said they actually wanted to put their dollars with black communities and we had all these conversations about social

are a victim of social media and believe me I've Had My Moments where I pick up to do one thing and then I wind up over in some land I never wanted to go into and so yeah you got to put the phone down MC you have seen art evolve over a period of time this is true what has changed in the past and What needs to still change in the present what has changed from the past to now um we as artists have a a pipeline to people yes which there used to be like this huge mechanism in between um which can s

ometimes be good and and sometimes not so good and so I am so grateful for the time that I grew up where I did not have to worry about being scrutinized as much you were a real artist yeah you were because you were living in such a pure moment everybody wasn't you know talking about your art criticizing your art every single moment yeah and if they did you didn't hear it and they dare not print it now today it's really hard for upcoming artists to really get their foothold when they're being you

t how does that feel to be celebrated loved and respected by your people for a long time in the industry I didn't feel like I really deserve to be here I've always kind of second guested talent and anything John Singleton rest in peace he'd always say as long as the culture love you you've always got a home so having a home feeling welcomed and having places like NAACP for us all to come and be like yo I see you it's great so let's go out there to the Big Show let's do it all right what a combo

hard work is not going unnoticed so I mean we appreciate everything we do and you know we owe it all to God and to our fans for sure I had my uh my 20-year College reunion with the fellas the other day and just seeing my my boys it was great that we're all alive that we're all healthy that we're all blessed how how important is it as black men to be unified all these years working together making money together feeding your families together and having the world be able to appreciate you on the

night like tonight it's I go skill and keep it short it's because we come from humble beginnings we out of the project orer Park in Boston Johnny's out of DC and it's so many people's hard to make it out the projects and we made it out representing all of them so whenever we feel like something's not going right we think about the blessings we get every night go ahead skill Z absolutely it on man you know it hasn't been a walk in the park 40 years we've had some trials and tribulations but throu

gh it all I hope that we're leading by example that so many of the groups that have come before us and after us that we've showed them what the answer and the TR the being having longevity is about yeah all right and now I know the group is stacked but I'm just letting youall know if y'all never ever need somebody to fill in I've been working on my dance moves I'll audition later I'll audition later in the meantime congratulations on tonight I can't wait to see those jersies hung up in the rafte

first got the letter from the NAACP I was like me I I thought I was just getting a ticket to the event to go and watch by the way and so just to be honored by such a prolific and historic organization just means everything no and I know and we're proud of you I want to know how does it feel as a young black girl what what advice do you give to all those little girls who look up to you as you know change makers and young leaders right I mean I'm always asking for advice for them I feel like black

girls in this generation are just filled with magic and so I'm always getting black R magic is literally its own Revolution right now but I would say something that I say to the young black girls that I meet is just know your power know your worth it does not come from outside it comes from within and the more that you can celebrate and name that the more that other people recognize and kind of walk in that absolutely and what woman has inspired you any women in your life oh absolutely there's
