Produced by Paulist Productions in Los Angeles, the series presented half-hour dramas illuminating the contemporary search for meaning, freedom, and love. Insight was an anthology series, using an eclectic set of story telling forms including comedy, melodrama, and fantasy to explore moral dilemmas. The series was created by Fr. Ellwood E. "Bud" Kieser, the founder of Paulist Productions. The anthology format and the religious nature of the program attracted a wide variety of actors, including Ed Asner, Jack Albertson, Beau Bridges, Carol Burnett, Ron Howard, Cindy Williams, Patty Duke, Ann Jillian, Cicely Tyson, James Doohan, Jack Klugman, Walter Matthau, Bob Newhart, Bill Bixby, John Ritter, Mark Hamill, Laura Dern, Barbara Hersey, Flip Wilson, and Martin Sheen.

Okay, you know that kid, Jeff? No. He wrote a couple of stories for you and you rejected them? Yeah. He just handed me this letter, to the editor, and I think it's a suicide note. Where is he? He just took off. "It's three o'clock in the morning. I've not been able to sleep since I made the decision. Five words to say it all: "I'm going to kill myself". I don't know how I'm gonna do it, just that I will before the day is over. I can't go on feeling this way any longer. Like I'm on the outside of
the world looking in. I know death will be better than life for me. I know it will stop the pain that's eating me alive. It's the only answer I can't live up to the expectations everyone has for me. They all need too much and I can't compete."
