Welcome to Japanesquest. Today, we are visiting Kaiyukan! Kaiyukan is an eight-story aquarium and has
one of the largest fish tanks in the world. It is located in the west part of Osaka
City, a 5-minute walk from Osakako Station. There are about 30 thousands sea creatures,
representing 620 separate species. Entering Kaiyukan, you are greeted by
the “Aqua Gate,” which leads you to the starting point of
the building on the 8th floor. The first highlight is the animal area on the 7th floor. Ther
e are 7 tanks, and each of them has a
different theme. You see sea otters from the Aleutian
Islands swimming leisurely, while sea lions from Monterey Bay are
lying down next to them. You find penguins from Antarctica with
their swaying walk, while dolphins from the Tasman Sea swim
across right in front of your eyes. You can take a peek inside animals’ lives
from around the world. In Kaiyukan, the animals have a regular
mealtime every day. Attendants give a lecture on each species
in Japa
nese while feeding them. It’s a great chance to see a rare moment, so you might like to schedule your visit
around the mealtimes. The most distinctive feature of Kaiyukan
is the Pacific tank, which is a recreation of the Pacific Ocean. The size of the tank, at its maximum, is
34 meters in length by 9 meters in depth. It holds 5,400 tons of water. As you circle down around The Pacific from
the 6th floor to the 4th floor, you will see a wide range of fish, such as whale sharks, rays, and horse m
ackerels, groupers, and so on. When you reach the bottom, it is very bewildering to look up at the
Pacific from below. It is a view that you will never get
tired of. After 5pm, they turn off the lights, and
Kaiyukan becomes a “Night Ocean.” The creatures of the sea display a
different face than in the daytime. You will be able to see their activities at night and how they sleep. At night, it's also ideal for romance, and this is the best time for a date. The main theme of Kaiyukan is
