KELOLAND Living

the weather in kelland is a roller coaster ride with temperatures fluctuating from up to down and back up again it's not out of the realm of possibility to see snow at 9:00 a.m. and be basking in the poolside Heat by 3:00 p.m. this unpredictable weather pattern can only mean one thing it's spring in kelland while you can't ever be 100% sure about where the weather is headed from one minute to the next one thing you can count on in Kell land in Spring is that your pup and maybe even a pocket pet
or a two has probably pretended to enjoy being inside for hours a day long enough and is itching and scratching to get into The Great Outdoors Morgan Weber owner of Lucky pups Adventures is here in the studio with us as the leader of her own home pack of pups she knows the ins and outs of puppy perfect Adventures that's why she's with us today to share some of her favorite ideas for getting your pooches Paws out of the palace and into the dirt thanks for being here thanks for having me yes this
is a fun time of year for pets I mean I'm so pet obsessed I love dogs so tell us some of the areas and cool places you can bring your dog this time of year oh my gosh so many places especially now that the snow little bit of snow that we had is all melted except maybe more is coming but once that's um the ground starts thawing out a little bit all of these good smells that have been stuck in the ground all winter start coming up so a lot of dogs get very excited just to go out and about even out
side your general neighborhood or take a new route go to new park there are so many many exciting smells for them and you mentioned you know other pets too cats especially get really excited this time of year they might try to Dart outdoors more frequently even just opening a window and letting your cat you know soak in the sun smell some fresh air can make them really happy do these smells have allergies I didn't do dogs get they can yeah yeah especially you know if your dog maybe has um kind o
f like a dust or a mold allergy anything that's been kind of stuck under the snow for the winter starts coming out you know as the leaves start coming out the grass starts coming up definitely some allergies so some pups have a harder time and there's a lot of great treatments you know you can chat with your vet about ways to help them feel a little bit more comfortable in the summer if they start getting itchy or their eyes start getting kind of watery sure so what kind of like role does invest
igating these new sense have in maybe dogs de development or behavior or kind of like why is it important for them to be able to explore yeah so um we forget sometimes that brain work for our pets is more important than physical work so people say oh my dog is so wild you know it's getting spring fever it's running all around um you know if you just go for say a f mile run every day you're just training a super athlete essentially but if you let them slow down have some sniffs it actually works
their brain it's much like them reading the newspaper scrolling social media taking all that in really works their brain dogs have something like you know 30 times the scent receptors that we do and so they don't use their eyes as much as they use their nose so if we kind of slow down letting them sniff go to the park you know have a picnic just let them kind of sniff around maybe take them on a Long Leash so they get a little bit more room to roam around those are great ways to really keep thei
r brains active if you've got an old dog maybe who doesn't want to walk as far maybe they've got some arthritis just going to the park and or rolling the windows down and going for a car ride can be a great way to take in all those new smells really exercise their brain the more we keep their brain active the you know can we the the slower we can make that aging process is there anything specific specific we should pack for our pup on this long adventure yeah I love bringing snacks like I like s
nacks for myself I like snacks for my dog um so bringing you know like some little sandwich meat some cheese if you take a picnic to the park bring something that's a little bit more you know dog friendly that they can have some snacks too I know my dogs tend to lose some of their best behaviors over the winter because like we said they've been kind of cooped up inside they're not as used to seeing all the other dogs and all the other people out in our neighborhood so bring those extra treats al
ong give them a little reward every time they see somebody and just kind of really reinforce their their good behavior essentially can I reinforce cat behavior because absolutely one of my cats is really just out for trouble Tom bro claw he's like he likes to it he he's he's a door Dasher right door Dash oh they most cats I feel like they are right they're always looking to escape there's something better out SM about it she's like no thank you she knows where the food comes from and yeah she do
esn't want to get locked out there right right yeah so you can get extra exra fancy if you want if you got a little you know maybe a little spot in your backyard people will build what they call a ctio which is like a little scened in area for your cat so they can go outside but still be safe because we don't want our cats roaming the neighborhood you know they we have lots of Critters and in you know in our towns um we have you know cars obviously other dogs you know cats can get in trouble if
they're out and about too much so it's a nice safe way for them to get some of that like enrichment that's really natural for them um but in a really safe way so yeah even like I said opening a window and letting them kind of sniff that Spring Air can be really nice is it okay sometimes I'll let the that cat go out on a leash that's tied to something yeah he wants to explore he'll wrap himself up around the fence though yeah so you have to kind of keep an eye on that and making sure you have a g
ood harness for a cat is important too because they're so Slinky that they can just kind of slip out of some harnesses so it's good take your pet to you know like a pet store maybe and get or get a couple different harness options home to test them out but yeah absolutely cats love going in a little stroller in a little backpack on a leash for a walk I have a tortoise at home and when it's nice out I you know let him go outside a little bit you know in a nice little enclosure so he can't Scurry
away but just lots of ways to you know let those pets that are normally stuck inside get them outside cuz we think we go to work you know we go on adventures we maybe go on you know dinner dates our pets are usually stuck at home you know they're kind of limited to what we can get them out for and so anytime to even just get out with you and spend more time with you is going to be a good time for them um what are your thoughts on outdoor uh the offleash uh Parks yeah so I think it's careful know
your dog my dogs are not trustworthy off leash and so just kind of know your dog and if your dog is going to um doesn't enjoy maybe being around other dogs I probably wouldn't take them to like an off leash Park where there's going to be a lot of other dogs just cuz then those you have a lot less control and you can't necessarily um control what other people are doing so other people might say oh don't worry he's friendly and then you say well but my dog is not and you know then their dog is al
ready coming at your dog so I say do it with caution you know kind of know your dog and um and you be respectful of other people again you don't want your dog to be the one that's running around and um you know instigating you know scuffles with other dogs even if your dog is friendly so I think it's they're good but yeah kind of do them with um discernment maybe if your dog is normally pretty good with other dogs but like hasn't seen other dogs for a few months should you just be a little wey t
hat first time too I probably would yeah you know it's never a bad thing use a Long Leash the nice thing about a Long Leash like maybe a 30 or 40ft leash is they have some freedom but you can reel them back in if you need to you know you have that kind of that backup so yeah it's never a bad thing to use a Long Leash and again take those good treats with you you know cheese stick is easy to break off and still stick in your pocket so anything like that is going to be a good little reminder that
you're also fun and not just everything else in the world and in the spring probably get ready to give that pup a bath so well thank you so much for being here thank you so much mhm
