Remember The Girls: what is X-linked inheritance?

Women with X-linked genetic disorders, also known as "carriers," aren't typically just carriers and often manifest symptoms, in addition to having a 50% chance of passing the condition down to their offspring. Remember The Girls' mission is to raise awareness of the issues facing carriers of these conditions and to provide a forum for women to share their stories, receive emotional support, and learn how to advocate for themselves and their families. ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ Additional Information ──────────────────────────── http://www.rememberthegirls.org/ ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ Social Media ──────────────────────────── https://www.facebook.com/remembergirls https://www.instagram.com/rememberthegirls/ https://twitter.com/remember_girls ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ Science Animated ──────────────────────────── http://www.sciani.com/ https://twitter.com/Sci_Ani https://www.facebook.com/scianimation/ ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ #RareDiseaseDay #Genetics #RememberTheGirls ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

[Music] [Applause] [Music] eighty percent of the world's seven thousand rare diseases are genetic over 100 of them are x-linked meaning they're caused by a mutation on the x-chromosome most of them are inherited someone with an x-linked mutation has a 50 chance of passing the condition down to their children biological males or people who have one x and one y chromosome almost always experience symptoms from an x-linked condition it's different for biological females or people who have two x chr
omosomes when they have one mutated x chromosome and one typical previously females who inherited x-linked conditions were assumed to be unaffected carriers today research and real-world evidence negates this many females who inherit excellent conditions experience symptoms to different degrees one explanation for this is x inactivation which occurs when the body randomly inactivates certain chromosomes this can leave females with more cells containing active mutated x chromosomes than healthy c
ells in some diseases the cells containing the active mutated x chromosome die off leaving more healthy cells to survive unfortunately support for females with x-linked conditions is lacking accessible reproductive options research on potential symptoms and treatment options are needed remember the girls is an international organization aiming to bridge these gaps through education support and advocacy [Music] [Applause] [Music] you
