I have just had my hair cut, but it's not that important because today, I will share you ... how I make this kind of video from the original one like this. I have seen so many music videos of indie band using this retro style, also in the ads, and some YouTube videos. I think it is a cool video style. I have just watched a short film named "They Saw The Sun First" recently. The short film's title means "people who were born and experienced their life before." This film was directed by Stefan Hun
t from the idea that ... many life advice are mostly from the young people. So, he got an idea to ask for a life advice from old people who live in New York. If anyone wants to watch the film, I will give you a link to watch it via the comment box below. It's going to make you feel good for sure, but it may a bit difficult to listen what they say. The thing that I noticed from the film are its mood & its tone. The film was edited using a retro film style. In fact, there are so many people made a
video of how to edit this retro style before. There's a lot! But, if you want to know how I edit it, keep watching. Besides the retro film editing tutorial, I'm going to talk about how I made those old sound effect as well. Also, I will talk about the music that should be used in this kind of video. Which one is suitable for a mood & a tone of the retro film video? Let's have a look. This is an original footage that I recorded when I travel with my mom two years ago. It is just only a normal fo
otage. Personally, it can be recorded using any kind of camera. A video from mobile phone works too! First step, make a new layer here. Click 'Adjustment Layer', click 'OK', then drag an adjustment layer to the timeline and expand it until it covers all the original footage. We will adjust the tone in this layer and keep the original one. The first thing I'm going to adjust is decreasing contrast because the color of old film camera is flat and it doesn't have much contrast. To adjust contrast,
go to Lumetri Color menu --> Basic Correction, then directly decrease the contrast. For those who has great gears, you can record the video using s-log or HLG instead. Now, the color is flatter. Next, I will adjust the sharpness of the footage to make it looks older. To adjust it, go to 'Creative', find 'Sharpen', then decrease it as you want. The footage will look blurrier like the old film. The third step, it is about color grading. For those who get used to a film tone, you can grade the colo
r in this program. Go to 'Lumetri Color' --> 'Color Wheels & Match' Color Wheels & Match tools are used for separately dying the footage tone, like shadows dying, midtones dying, highlights dying. The tone will be different depends on the film stock you use. Personally, I prefer green shadows and yellow highlight. This is what you will get after adjusting the color wheels of shadows and highlight. Anyway, if you don't want to grade it yourself, you can download LUT and apply it on you footage as
well. Next step is add grain to our footage. You can download film grain on the internet. And yes, it's free. I already have one, so I'm going to show you how to add it to the footage. Drag the film grain you downloaded to the footage. Firstly, it will be in grey color like this. Go to 'Effect Controls', change blend mode to 'Overlay'. Copy it to all footages. Now, our footage has a light film grain. You can also add the light leak effect in this step as well. But you need to download them firs
t. It will comes like this at first. Like this. Change its blending mode to 'Screen'. You don't need to add it to every footages, just only not too much so that it will look natural. Next, I will add a video frame. I also have one already. You can make it in Photoshop and import it here. If you feel it looks too smooth, Go to Effects --> search 'Posterize', Choose 'Posterize Time' and drag it to the footage. A current framerate is at 24. To make it look like the old film camera, decrease the fra
merate to 18. The footage will be less smooth than the original one now. For those who think it should be added. That's all for a video part. The video we get will be like this. Next, let's move to the sound part. The easiest way to make cracking sound like the old radio or making a vinyl sound is ... using 'Parametric Equalizer' tool. To use it, go to 'Effects', search 'Parametric Equalizer', then drag it to your sound. After that, go to 'Effect Controls' --> 'Parametric Equalizer', then click
'Edit'. This is our sound graph. To make a cracking sound or vinyl sound, lower the first and the last 3 points to the bottom. The lower the points are, the clearer sound effect you get. After finish lower them, this is a result. The last one, where will get sound effects and background music from? I personally get them from Epidemic Sound. This is a monthly paid website that contains a lot of copyright music and sound. Most of the music I used as a background song for my videos were from this w
ebsite. The reason I use this website because it is very easy to use. We can search what music we want by filtering the mood, speed, or even style. These are the examples of the music that suitable for this retro style video. If you want some fresh and young mood, I suggest you use indie song or alternative song. If you want some old and vintage mood, I suggest you use classic song, jazz song, piano song, instrumental song, or even song in 60s, 70s, 80s, and 90s. All of them can be found in this
website. There are not only songs in this website, but also a lot of sound effects as well. A lot of them. For those who interest the website, I will post the website via the comment box below. Like what I said, you don't need to copy everything. Just take something that you like mix with the modern technology to make your own style. We can appreciate old things as well as open our heart for something new. That's all for today. See you in the next video.
