what camera are you feel they're very very comfortable with this now maybe a bit too comfortable I'd say the mangrove habitat in Raja aat Indonesia is an important ecosystem for many diverse species it's full of all sorts of weird and wonderful creatures on a boat packed with equipment every day for 5 weeks the planet Earth 3 team head out to film a predator hunting with an amazing and unusual technique the Archer fish so I'm just about to jump in the water and check whether there's any Archer f
ish around they can be quite timid uh so we're hoping that there's some big numbers of them in there but despite the big numbers it doesn't mean it'll be easy Arch fish are are very challenging fish to film they're they're small they move erratically pretty shy so they don't really really like the camera being being turned on them they often move away so it's really a game of patience and uh yeah perseverance these fish have developed an incredible specialism which means unlike most fish they ca
n hunt above the surface of their own watery World they can spit water very very accurately and knock down insects crabs snails um anything they can see on the mango filming this incredible behavior is proving challenging but it's not the only problem that the crew are facing the threat of crocodiles is very real while Patrol boats keep watch camera operator Roger muns is employing an unorthodox technique the theory is that crocodiles don't like being watched so while we're filming our fake eyes
are sticking out the back of our head and the Croc will just turn away because it thinks it's being watched next on the list of difficulties for the crew the weather one of the occupational hazards workings is tropical rain so you can have a nice bright sunny day one day and the next you have this as you can imagine Mak filming very 10 days in five different locations into the shoot and the fish are proving elusive oh uh that was tough very uh super dark if mro and fish just weren't doing their
thing hours later still no luck but then a sign of hope they're definitely there there's about eight of them the crew rally into position could this be the moment they've been waiting for we'll see how we [Music] go using the latest technology the crew camera systems allow them to film under and above the water in super slow motion all of this is to film one key [Music] [Music] Behavior the Archer fish are incredibly accurate shooting from fish to Target in about a tenth of a second while Mitch
is having an interview about how the shoot is going he's made the crucial mistake while in the presence of Archer fish he's forgotten to look down you and he's not the only one just got me right in the ey they're spitting at me that's exactly what happens with archer fish they're very very comfortable with us now maybe a bit too comfortable I'd say after five groing weeks the skill and commitment of this team has paid off with Unforgettable footage that was awesome we had some really cool split
shots so cool naked eye can't see and just how incredibly accurate they are the power it's an amazing thing to see my favorite part of the shoot has been able to just use at these amazing new uh camera Technologies it's been incredible the shots I've been seeing are some of the best I've seen it's really cool

@chrislochner4038

Super interesting how they knew to go for the human eyes.

@shanecormier1

Honestly, the dedication to film a small fish is really amazing. Thanks for bringing it to us, and the shot in the eye was the highlight.

@jametalboy

So much patience and hardwork by the team and the fish... The camera shot of half above & half underwater is awesome... This fish is really a silent predator...thanks to BBC EARTH

@uniworkhorse

The footage is insanely clean. Well done, the patience is amazing for these type of crews.

@lorddevil863

I can confirm that these fishs are amazing. I live in the Eastern Asian part of the world, you can buy archerfish at the local fish street here. They live in brackish water (not salt, not fresh, in between) and I had a 80 gallon tank setup. I had 3 archerfishs living with some Sliver Moonys and Spotted Scat. I couldn't really get crickets to feed them because the top of my tank wasn't fully sealed, but I could replicate their natural environment the best I could and put branches above the water and gave them hiding spots with some fake roots under water. The fun part was, I would put dried shrimps on drifferent locations on the branches and just watch the archerfish takes aim at the target and shoot them down. Some archerfish are actually capable of jumping out of the water to catch a meal too if its close enough to the surface.

@praveenX

This footage is worth all the patience, hard work, and pain!

@i-chunhuang8413

Amazing footage!! Kudos to the crews for working hard on getting these!!

@RogerMunns

This really captures what it was like for us to film the Archer fish for Planet Earth 3. Very proud to have filmed the underwater for this sequence.

@danicagraves1074

Absolutely gorgeous

@buzzyboo6673

We always appreciate how beautiful and awe inspiring the filming is from BBC, but these videos show us how difficult it can be to obtain. Thank you for your fantastic work! 😊❤

@StacheCam

Spitting fish is my kind of fish

@BladedCreed

It is nice to see the people behind these amazing shots. Give them a chance to some notoriety among the viewers

@egonvirmann9467

@LeprosuGnome

I really appreciate the filming crew's work, it's an amazing educational and conservation service to humanity.

@Ariezz_82

The shape & color of a fish that looks ordinary but becomes extraordinary when it can search for prey in an unusual way.

@nomenestomen3452

love this "behind the scene" kind of documentary. props to the team!

@FarideLadak

It’s fascinating that these small fish have this vision to see through water then out of water and so accurately spit water to catch their prey. Great work by the team to share with us such knowledge.

@sharkskingaming6783

Never knew these fish exist. Amazing.

I love BBC❤
