R. Martin. Martin began writing the series in 1991 and the first volume was published in 1996. The story of A Song of Ice and Fire takes place in a fictional world, primarily on a continent called Westeros but also on a large landmass to the east, known as Essos. Most of the characters are human but as the series progresses others are introduced, such as the cold and menacing supernatural Others from the far North and fire-breathing dragons from the East, both thought to be extinct by the humans of the story. There are three principal story lines in the series: the chronicling of a dynastic civil war for control of Westeros among several competing families; the rising threat of the Others, who dwell beyond an immense wall of ice that forms Westeros' northern border; and the ambition of Daenerys Targaryen, the exiled daughter of a king who was murdered in another civil war fifteen years before, to return to Westeros and claim her rightful throne. As the series progresses, the three story lines become increasingly interwoven and dependent upon each other." "Game of Thrones is an American fantasy drama television series created by David Benioff and D. B. Weiss for HBO. It is an adaptation of A Song of Ice and Fire, a series of fantasy novels by George R. R. Martin, the first of which is A Game of Thrones. Set on the fictional continents of Westeros and Essos, Game of Thrones has a large ensemble cast and follows several story arcs throughout the course of the show. The first major arc concerns the Iron Throne of the Seven Kingdoms of Westeros through a web of political conflicts among the noble families either vying to claim the throne or fighting for independence from whoever sits on it. A second focuses on the last descendant of the realm's deposed ruling dynasty, who has been exiled to Essos and is plotting to return and reclaim the throne. The third follows the Night's Watch, a military order defending the realm against threats from beyond Westeros's northern border." #gameofthrones #asoiaf

Who are the chained giants of the North? What is the story of the Greatjon? And where does their allegiance truly lie? This is the History of House Umber. Like and subscribe to Fantasy Haven for more animated content like this, and lemme know in the comments: What fate awaits House Umber in the Winds of Winter? The Umbers hold the Last Hearth, the largest northern castle sworn to House Stark. It lies south of the Gift, east of the Kingsroad, west of the Bay of Seals, and north of the Last River.
Their sigil is a brown-haired giant with broken silver chains, roaring furiously on a flame-red field. Thousands of years ago, the Umbers were one of many ancient House First Man ruling their wintery fiefdoms as petty kings… until they were subjugated by the Kings of Winter who bore the name Stark, and reduced to vassals. They have been loyal ever since. Most of ancient Umber history is lost to time. Some speculate that the legendary Night's King, the tyrannical Lord Commander who enslaved the
Night's Watch, may have been an Umber. But then again, he may have been a Bolton, or a Flint, or even a Stark for all anyone knows. What we do know is that the northerly Umber lands have been at risk of wildling attacks, and its Lords have developed a fierce hatred towards the tribes beyond the Wall. Three thousand years ago, two wildling Kings-Beyond-The-Wall launched an invasion of the North through caves beneath the Wall. They were the brothers Gendel and Gorne. They were the brothers Gendel
and Gorne - and his Umber vassals, who joined the fray. Aegon's Conquest saw Lord Torrhen Stark accept the title Lord Paramount, and the Umbers became powerful Lords Bannermen. The Umbers once more marched with the Starks against a wildling invasion. In 226 AC, a new King-Beyond-the-Wall united the wildling clans: Raymun Redbeard, who saw the degraded state of the Night's Watch and seized the moment. Lord Commander Jack Musgood was caught off-guard by the invasion, and was forever known as Sleep
y Jack. On the shores of Long Lake, King Raymun's wildlings were caught between Lord Willam Stark and Lord Harmond Umber - known to history as the Drunken Giant. Willam was slain and his brother Artos took revenge, and the wildlings fled. Some time later, Last Hearth was inherited by Lord Hoarfrost Umber. He had three sons we know of: an unnamed heir, Mors, and Hother. Mors was a fearsome fighter… and a drunkard. One night he passed out by the side of a road, probably drunk, and a crow mistook h
im for a corpse. It pecked out his eye, and the enraged Mors grabbed it, and tore off its head with his bare teeth. Since then, he has been known as Crowfood. He replaced his lost eye with a chunk of dragonglass, which he also covers up with a white leather eyepatch. Mors has led a sad existence. His wife died in childbirth. In 270, his only daughter was kidnapped by wildlings, leaving him with a burning hatred for the savages beyond the Wall. And in 283, his sons marched down south at the call
of Lord Eddard Stark, and died during the Battle of the Trident. Let's go back again, to the year 250. Hoarfrost Umber believed his third son Hother had the makings of a maester. While studying in Oldtown, a whore tried to steal from Hother, and so he disembowelled them. This is a tale told only in whispers, for the prostitute was a man. Regardless, this earned Hother the nickname Whoresbane. Eventually, he abandoned his studies and returned to the Last Hearth. These two brothers would eventuall
y grow into, as Catelyn Stark put it, hoary old brigands. The unnamed heir of Hoarfrost Umber had multiple sons of his own, the eldest of whom succeeded him as Lord: Jon Umber, known as the Greatjon for his immense height. The Greatjon is a fierce warrior, a mighty drinker, and a surprisingly decent singer. Apparently. As with all the Lords Bannermen, he answers Robb Stark's call to Winterfell following the imprisonment of Lord Eddard. Hungry for the fight, the Greatjon demands to lead the vangu
ard of the Northern host, mocking Robb for his youth and threatening to march home if refused. After daring to touch his greatsword, the cocky lord loses his fingers to Grey Wind… and sees this as a sign of Robb's strength, so respects his wishes. When the Northern host marches southwards and makes camp at Moat Cailin, the Umbers station themselves at the Children's Tower. Robb Stark gives command of his infantry to Lord Bolton instead of the Greatjon, preferring Roose's cautious approach. When
the northern host splits at the Twins, so too do the Greatjon and his heir, the Smalljon. The Greatjon fights at the Battle of the Camps, setting fire to Lannister siege towers outside of Riverrun, while the Smalljon joins Robb's personal battle guard, and fights with him at the Battle of the Whispering Wood. After the death of Eddard Stark, a war council is held in the great hall of Riverrun. The Greatjon insults Stevron Frey for his cautious advice and rejects Catelyn Stark's calls for peace,
instead proclaiming Robb Stark as King in the North, setting the future of the War of the Five Kings in motion. Meanwhile, the elderly Crowfood and Whoresbane remain at Last Hearth as its joint-castellans, although they do attend the Harvest Feast at Winterfell hosted by Bran Stark. Along with others such as Lord Wyman Manderly, Mors wishes to marry Donella Hornwood, the recently widowed Lady of the Hornwood lands. Hother, meanwhile, complains that his nephew took so many men down south that the
y don't have enough for the harvest, and also asks for ships to defend Last Hearth from wildling raiders slipping past Eastwatch-by-the-Sea. The brothers bristle when ordered to work with Wyman Manderly in building ships, with Mors calling him "a waddling sack of suet", but they behave nonetheless. Down south the Greatjon fights in the Battle of Oxcross, and goes on to raid the Westerlands, seizing goldmines at Castamere, Nunn's Deep, and Pendric Hills. The loyal Smalljon stays with Robb Stark.
He and Black Walder Frey scale the walls of the Crag, the seat of House Westerling, and help to capture it. The taking of the Crag, of course, eventually leads to Robb's downfall, and he break his pact with the Freys to marry Jeyne Westerling. Ser Ryman Frey furiously marches his army back to the Twins, and the equally furious Greatjon suggests attacking them, but Robb refuses. Lord Umber then takes a more diplomatic approach, proposing marriage alliances between his widowed uncles and the Freys
. King Robb secures a different pact - a marriage between Edmure Tully and Roslin Frey. With the Frey's support, he plans to retake Moat Cailin from the Ironborn to reclaim the North. The Greatjon would finally be given command of the vanguard in order to create a diversionary attack from the south. This plan never comes to pass. The Umbers attend the wedding at the Twins. While the Smalljon stays sober, his father gets drunk, sings loudly, and carries poor Roslin to the bedchamber during the be
dding ceremony. Lame Lothar Frey, the architect of the Red Wedding, assigned three men with getting the Greatjon drunk: Petyr Pimple, Merrett, and Ser Whalen Frey. All fail in this task. When the Red Wedding begins, it takes eight men to subdue the Greatjon... but not before he kills one and wounds two with a stolen sword. The Smalljon throws a table over Robb to protect him. He himself is sent to his knees by a bolt, and beheaded by a man in shaggy furs - a Bolton or a Karstark. The Greatjon is
subdued and held captive at the Twins. After Roose Bolton becomes Warden of the North, Whoresbane begrudgingly swears allegiance to the flayed men, fearing for the life of his nephew in Frey captivity. He feasts at the Dreadfort with Ramsay Bolton and Arnolf Karstark, and later marches his men south to join the siege of Moat Cailin. After this, Hother travels to Winterfell to attend the wedding between Ramsay and Jeyne Poole disguised as Arya Stark. Though he despises the Freys for killing his
kin, there is little he can do. His brother Crowfood, however, is one of the few northerners swearing fealty to King Stannis Baratheon, on three conditions: One, that Stannis sends him the skull of Mance Rayder for use as a cup; two, that Stannis pardons Hother after crushing the Boltons; and three, that Umber will not be made to fight Umber in battle. Stannis agrees to these demands. The House of Umber is split. Most of their army perished down south. Crowfood commands green boys, while Whoresb
ane oversees grizzled greybeards. Mors camps outside Winterfell during the blizzard, having his men dig pit traps and blow horns to cause confusion. He draws out Bolton and Frey troops, some of whom fall into the traps, including Ser Aenys Frey, who breaks his neck. Mors also uses the opportunity to capture the fleeing Theon Greyjoy and Jeyne Poole, sending them both to the Crofter's Village where Stannis is encamped. What does the future hold? If Whoresbane does not betray the Boltons, he may
be executed by Stannis when he takes Winterfell. Crowfood may be a dead man walking. This fragment of an Asha chapter for The Winds of Winter appears to detail the Crowfood's head atop a weirwood spike carried by Frey soldiers. The Greatjon himself may be imprisoned in the Twins, but Ser Jaime Lannister demands that Walder Frey's hostages be transferred to the Crown. The riverlands is a dangerous place, and what would happen if the Brotherhood Without Banners evoked the Umber sigil and freed the
giant from his chains. As for the rest of this family living at Last Hearth, when the Long Night comes and the Others begin their march, we may see the Fall of the House of Umber. @joelsigleycross9636

the more I learn about book Stannis the more I like him.

@caseygray2328

I personally love the Umbers they are huge and grumpy but they also loyal as f*ck and hype men beyond compare

@TheCbot88

Crowfood was taken for dead after a battle and lost his eye to a crow, not on the side of a road. It's after a battle.

@Epeprm

Only GRRM could create "Whoresbane" and "Crowfood" into a single family. Man, that guy can write.

@Daemon3rdBlackfyre

Let’s see a “house Florent” video

@gerardjagroo

If George RR Martin touches anymore of our beloved Umbers, we the fans are going to make him into a pie.

@O-M-0

We all know GRRM based a lot of Westeros on things that exist in the United Kingdom irl, like The Wall being inspired by Hadrian's Wall, for example. And the eastern half of Hadrian's Wall is in Northumberland - North Umber Land. George's creativity knows no bounds.

@andalilbitqueer

Wow, I did not realize how one Last Week Tonight joke featured that many plot details for a decade-old book lmao

@JLchevz

“The Fall in the House of Umber” lol I didn’t expect an EAP reference here. EAP is amazing.

@Sniffchicken5

Mr haven I think a video on the twins of Westeros could be cool like the cargylls,redwynes and wildling kings

@sebastos7693

I just realised that if Hother had actually become a maester, he would have been a chained giant.

@0bskureference

I like to think that the bit about the Night’s King being an Umber, Bolton, Flynt or Stark or however many families is literally true. Like a fun wink from GRRM that he is born to parents that had blood of all those families but had the surname Snow or maybe Stark. Is that crazy? We see case with the Stark children having blood from House Stark, Tully, Whent and at least half a dozen other houses if you go far back enough.

@mysteryjunkie9808

Your subscribers want a video on who will get Rosby in the WoW and want you to tell us why it should be Perwyn Frey. Thank you Merry Christmas

@BlackfyreHeir

This was great! Continue to do this small houses because they are very interesting! Do Glover or Blackwood next. The Boltons are my favourite!

@irishoak7269

The great john is also the name of the toilet Gregor Clegane uses.

@adrianbergstrand9386

You should make a video about theories how the different houses in Westeros got their Valyrian Steel weapons.

@RohanSlazar

Always hated how GOT made the Smalljon a Bolton lackey

@brandy5836

Appreciate the Poe reference

@domi6026

Lmao Ser Merrett Frey faceplanting on the table was such a good touch, great video as always Lord Haven
