a right good morning to you Cory James chenica she is tracking the roads for you this morning we're going to check with her in just a second Britney's in for me R shul though this morning with that forecast and uh things starting off not too bad on a Monday yeah you know have the jacket when stepping out the door it is a little bit chilly out there but overall a mixture of sun and clouds with highs around seasonable for this time of year but yes the big buzz around DC right now is Peak Bloom now
the earliest Peak Bloom ever was actually March 15th of 1990 so Peak Bloom hit yesterday the latest Peak Bloom was April 18th of 1958 but the good news is if you want to check out the cherry blossoms this uh today not looking like a bad forecast we'll be holding on to Sunshine temperatures will begin to warm up into the lower 50s as we head through the afternoon but right now I'm going to send things outside right now to can Candice tell us what are you seeing at this hour good morning well we
are here at the Tidal Basin and I will just step out of the way so that you can catch a glimpse of these gorgeous blooms out here and really you know if you've been outside at all you mentioned yesterday where people were surprised by the the blooms that were uh fully out in all of their glory and they are also scattered uh throughout the city as well so you can catch them and multiple uh places throughout DC um but if you didn't know this is the earliest that uh the tray blossoms here have reac
hed Peak Bloom since 2004 it's about 20 years ago as many know the iconic yosino cherry trees were gifted to DC from Japan over a hundred years ago back in 1912 to symbolize friendship between the two Nations and ever since first lady Helen taed and the Japanese ambassador wife planted those first saplings here on the Title Basin those famous white and pink blooms have been the first sign of spring here in the nation's capital and keeping the trees healthy is serious business just last week we s
aw the National Park Service pruning the trees there are approximately 3,800 trees in total and that happens twice a year it's one of the most important things to do to maintain their overall health and appearance according to the National Park Service every year the cherry blossoms draw thousands of visitors from across the country and internationally to take in the beauty of the flowers and partake in the annual Cherry Blossom Festival we thought uh we'd beat the the crowd and that is not the
case they're beautiful this is actually our first time we just moved to the city we've been looking forward to it since we moved in in July and this year's Cherry Blossom Festival kicks off on Wednesday March 20th so definitely come out and take part in all of that fun and Fanfare and you can head on over to the trust for the National Mall website check out their Bloom cam they have a really cool time lapse video of the whole blooming process that just uh led up to this wonderful moment here you

dress it also allows Metro Police to issue fines or arrest those refusing to provide that information Before the bill officers could only ask Fair violators to leave the station or go back and pay well now Fair Vaders could face up to a $100 fine for refusing to listen the law also increases penalties for assaulting bus and reil operators and Metro employees these new penalties only apply to DC Maryland and Virginia already issue fines of up to $100 for skipping a toll students filing a lawsuit
against the University of Maryland will meet in court today it alleges the school's investigation into Greek life was unlawful earlier this month UMD placed restrictions on 32 Greek life organizations after starting an investigation on misconduct last week the school lifted restrictions placed on fraternities and sororities however there are five fraternities that remain under investigation the school said in a statement that it found evidence suggesting involvement in hazing and other incidents
the school says it's planning new ways to report hazing and improve communication with Greek life and today Fairfax county is hosting the first of two virtual meetings on potential updates to an affordable home ownership program now the workforce dwelling unit home buyer program is meant to provide below market prices for homes near employment centers the County's considering lowering the maximum eligible income for the program adding more eligible areas and offering more diverse home options t
