tonight's trip back down the Pennsylvania Road we're looking toward the future or at least what the future looked like in science fiction movies from the ' 50s one man collected a lot of toys from that time and he showed them off to Mike Stevens in 1995 Larry Brook has the basement of his Mountaintop home about half full of space toys several hundred at least he buys and sells toys these are on the way out but Larry thought we'd like a look first a lot of these toys are made the tin ones primari
ly in the 50s made out of uh uh tin and they're basically battery operated and wind up and then as the production cost sore they went into cheaper toys of uh plastic uhuh for Larry for me interest in space toys dates back to the 50s and those Grade B black and white matina movies there's always a flying saucer an alien some type of alien monster we were being invaded from some point in space mankind made some moves into space in the ' 50s and we all secretly dreamed of going out there the makers
of the toys were more than willing to offer their versions of the future one would think I suppose in uh this concept of the future robots would be doing all work right right and we'd be relaxing yeah I wonder what happened to that plant sounded like an idea to me Larry offered to let us play with a few interesting pieces these may bring back some memories for you if you can remember names like Sputnik and Telstar Robbie the robot was big he got his start in the movie Forbidden Planet and went
on for years sort of the universal robot symbol a Runabout Flying Saucer for those trips to and from the space station perhaps for a quart of milk or a loaf of bread my favorite is a saucer that carried a crew perhaps on patrol watch the little astronaut and the lookout post Ah that's a great little toy so an era Revisited space was the final frontier and we were ready to conquer it in a way we were able to do that all it took was imagination I'm Mike Stevens new watt 16 on the Pennsylvania Road
in Mountaintop
