Why Study Classics?

Why do we study Classics? Studying classics, or the literature, history, and culture of ancient Greece and Rome, is important for a number of reasons. By studying classics, we can gain a deeper understanding of the history and development of Western civilization and the ways in which it has influenced the world we live in today. First and foremost, classics provide us with a rich and diverse cultural heritage. The ancient Greeks and Romans have left a lasting legacy on Western civilization, and their influence can be seen in many aspects of modern society, from literature and art, to politics and philosophy. By studying classics, we can learn about the roots of our own culture and how it has evolved over time. Furthermore, classics offer a unique perspective on the human experience. The ancient Greeks and Romans faced many of the same challenges and struggles that we do today, and their literature and history offer valuable insights and lessons that can help us better understand ourselves and the world around us. The works of classical authors often deal with timeless themes such as love, honor, justice, and the nature of human relationships. By studying these works, we can gain a greater understanding of the human condition and the ways in which people have grappled with these universal issues throughout history. Classics also teach us about the development of language and literature. The works of ancient Greek and Roman writers, such as Homer, Sophocles, and Virgil, are considered to be some of the greatest works of literature in the Western tradition. By studying these works, we can learn about the techniques and themes that have shaped the way we write and think about literature today. In addition, studying classics can help us to better understand other cultures and civilizations. The ancient Greeks and Romans had a complex and diverse society, and their interactions with other cultures helped to shape the world we live in today. By studying the classics, we can gain a greater appreciation for the cultural differences and similarities that have shaped the world throughout history. Finally, studying classics can also help to broaden our perspective and deepen our understanding of the world. By immersing ourselves in the literature and culture of other times and places, we can gain a greater appreciation for diversity and the ways in which people from different cultures and backgrounds have approached the same fundamental questions and challenges. At Classic Masterworks, we take a broader view of what defines a Classic, covering art, literature and philosophy from the ancient as well as the not-to-distant past. Yet, the themes of examining our shared cultural heritage, our shared human experiences, the development of language and literature, and understanding a broad range of perspectives helps us appreciate ourselves, and our place within the world. šŸ›ļø Please subscribe - https://bit.ly/32qv7fU #classics
