Zoning fight unfolding along Miami-Dade street between residents, developers

A South Florida community is pleading with Miami-Dade County commissioners to deny a developer the upzoning he needs to now build a 216-bed senior assisted living facility on the end-of-the-block property he bought almost a decade ago.

veloping now a zoning flight in a Southwest Miami J neighborhood continues after a county hearing was postponed yet again today neighbors aren't giving up their fight and local T's Glenna milberg is live to tell us what's at stake Glenna Nicole I want everybody to kind of look at this neighborhood and you'll recognize just a nice older South Florida neighborhood people living in their homes people will also find very familiar the fear of development the fear of more density and that is what is h
appening right now let's take you over to that property right at the end of the street that is what the fight is all about this dead end Street one way in and the same way out decades old and all homes is a wanting a front to Common Sense a community pleading with Miami day Commissioners to deny a developer the up zoning he needs to now build a 216 bed senior assisted living facility on the end of the block property he bought almost a decade ago now the Speculator wants to change the zoning agai
n so I'm pausing this the twice deferred vote was knapped again today by too many Commissioners absent from the zoning hearing the neighbors who had packed the chamber have been protesting the AL since learning about it bringing up this 1986 Covenant for a single family home unless upzoned we met with these neighbors we address their concerns the issues before you are simply not in my backyard the developers team makes a case that changes in County Housing and transportation plans makes this spo
t adjacent to the busway ripe for denser living see we can defer the item as the morning ticked on Commissioners departed no Quorum leaving no choice but for no action the district rep backs her residents this applicant is going to come back and continue to upzone this property but a warning too that upzoning and more may eventually be inevitable it may not be an Alf next time but it probably still won't be tow houses and so for the third deferral this is the sign for the meeting this morning it
will stay there another month the date will change to sometime in April TBA and this is something that not only this block but everybody in every neighborhood and in South Florida can understand that with progress and more people and more development this fight goes on I'm glena milberg live in Southwest Miami day tonight local 10 News
