GMC Motorhome Rehab Ranch

7 days ago

hey guys Jim Bounds at motor home rehab Ranch  I'm sitting here on the back porch listen to some music I I had a comment on a recent the  recent video I did about uh window tent uh types one thing that I forgot to talk about was  the window film The the new window film that can be put on the our windshield which is a big deal  uh that our windshield is a wonderful thing you're sitting out there and everything's out in front  of you but that means that after about 2:00 even with a visor it gets p
retty hot up there uh  thank you Steve uh to remind me to uh to talk about this here recently the biggest problem in  window tinning of a windshield like that is it's kind of like trying to stretch uh a basketball  with tin FL without creasing it doesn't like to do that and in the old days I say the old days  up until five years ago or so window film could stretch a little bit but it really wasn't made  to stretch now somebody Smart in the window 10 industry said wait a minute wait a minute we c
an  reformulate the the the plastic material to be a little bit more flexible Maybe what do you think  so they've been working on that and uh was that's always been the big deal I used to I used to be  real proud that I could do the back window of a a Camaro in one piece problem is the harder you  stretch it the harder the tension is on the uh on the adhesion and it breaks loose okay so what we  did in the past is we did the froster seams butt seams bringing pieces together and we could shape  t
he pieces that uh it would not have a lot of stress on it uh and it would cover a curved window  well that doesn't really work on the windshield because the windshield uh you can't have a seam  in the windshield dot wouldn't like that anyway but it would drive you crazy so to stretch a a  large piece of film around a curve like we have uh I could do a uh I could do a uh a window strip  like about a two or three inch thing at the top some people have tried the uh ttin the windshields  but they re
ally didn't work well again recently it seems like the wind window film technology has  come up with a new formulation of of plastic uh Lumar one I talked about theirs is called air 80  I also did a lot of work with another one that was called nanoflex nanofilm uh really good stuff  really stretched well um when this stuff first came out because I used to be a tener said well  wait a minute man let's see about this let's see how that works and I I gave it a shot uh and just  like I said before w
indow 10 is like bowling okay this doing a A nanoflex or a a curved window with  air 80 or nanoflex film uh is a new experience okay I creased it a couple times I did get it done  the one thing I did realize that if someone can do it it's worth paying them to do it yeah and how  much seems like it's about about $500 a piece and and it it'll take them I mean $1,000 that's  50% more for a new set of windshields but to be honest with you think about it all that heat is  knocked out okay now remembe
r this that window Now does not have glass on it so there's a be  there's a plastic film on there so you're got to to be careful with your windshield you have to  not clean it with with any kind of braces for sure but you need to take care of that W window because  one you paid a lot of money for it two it is new technology and you know U never know never know  uh it might uh it might release I'm sure they've they've uh considered all that kind of stuff  because nobody would you know no large co
mpany would invest into something that uh isn't going to  work I mean so uh I think we're at the point that we can ttin the windshields and it it is a good  thing Now understand tenning is an art form like I said before if you look close enough you will  see something because there's air there's stuff in the air all the time and taking a large piece  of film like that and getting it on the back of your windshield without one little piece of dust  getting in it not going to happen you follow what
I mean so so if you get the windshields done and  you see a little spot somewhere when you look real hard you step back and you don't see anything  that's really uh uh the way an art form is I I can't that's it's part of the reason that a lot of  teners get out of it because some guy is just so so picky that he'll get down or while he's working  he's on the other side looking at it and make sure everything's okay those things drive those things  Drive teners crazy and honestly you're looking fo
r things that uh it's just impossible to be perfect  I bring this up because it's a windshield and it's going to be you're G to see it because you're  looking at it all the time think about it okay so give the give the guy uh his du if he gets that  on there in one piece without creases in it and you don't have SE Boulders or something in it buy  them a pizza okay this is new technology now you can use this all this stuff on the side windows  and uh there's no need to because the side windows ha
ve a two dimensional curve the problem comes  with window 10 is turning it three dimensions that means it has to stretch and it doesn't like  to stretch all right look thank you Steve for bringing that up I I I was remiss in in talking  about that because we're talking about types of film it's correct all right well look this will  be uh what episode we'll call it episode three because it really is important and uh it is the  new thing new technology and it can help us if you uh in the South it
really makes a difference uh  do I have it no because I don't have $1 thousand dollars to spend on it but if you do and if you're  doing a restoration and uh you recognize the heat issue you windshield tint pretty cool thing great  look thanks again Steve and uh we'll talk to you later

@bryanmay99

Perfect timing. I am at this point in our rebuild.

@David-jo4gt

Thank you for explaining why it cost so much.

@liquidmodulation

New films have bend shrinkable for the last 20 years . The newest films are bought uv and Ir. This films are the newest and most afective on our windsheilds . llumar, 3M, ASWF and may other manufacturers share this tech. After over 40 years of tinting window much has changed. Now retired I still tint my on windows . I would agree with everthing shared on this topic.

@donjaksa4071

Can you tint new glass before the windshield is installed?
