Short video apps like TikTok, reels, you open
these app, start swiping, and before you know it, hours of your life is gone in thin air
and achieved nothing. In this video, I will be going deep on why
these apps are attractive and why are companies want them to be attractive. If you are a hardcore lover of TikTok or apps
like these you should not skip this video. So stay tuned till the end. Now, I am not someone who is always on these
apps but when I started using it, even without my knowledge I
started to scroll for more
videos, and more and then, even more. The engagement level on these apps is higher
than any other apps. it loops us in the same video until we interact with it. we all know how addictive TikTok is. I’ve personally deleted the app multiple
times to kill my craving, but I find myself shamelessly downloading the app over and over
again. Now before we dive deep into the psychology
used behind these apps we will first look at the history of short video apps. It all first st
arted in the year 2012. Vine, a short video app was made. Initially, it was a huge success, people have
never watched this thing before. It was a new thing to the world, but later
due to lack of money and a bad advertisement model for the advertising company, the app
found itself in the bottom pit. Instagram at that time was gaining momentum
with its ever-increasing active users. Instagram introduced a video share feature
in the app which hit hard vine company. with heavy competition from Instag
ram and
Snapchat things become even worse for VINE. Later TikTok became the best companion for
teenagers and the rest is history PRESENT While video broadly stands above other content
in driving engagement, short-form video stacks up even better. Videos that hover between 30 seconds and one
minute are the most shared – and with Facebook’s changing Newsfeed algorithm, shares are more
important than ever. This may seem counter-intuitive, but short-form
offers a lot of flexibility in content and st
yle. You can quickly cover a news item, run down
a list, give a look behind the scenes at an event or business, offer a quick gag, or just
about anything else you can think of. Here are some facts about videos that are
worth a look at. 54% of People Want to See Brands Create Video
vs Any Other Type of Content 66% of Video Ads are Less than 30 Seconds. 68% of People will Happily Watch a Business
Video if it’s Under a Minute 49% of Business Videos Are Less Than a Minute
Long Short videos for short
attention spans
Social media is all about immediate gratification. Users are looking to consume content quickly,
to keep up to date on breaking news and the latest trending topics. They simply don’t have the time or patience
to sit through a lengthy video. The average length of a view on Facebook is
only 18 seconds. Just imagine how low our attention span is
becoming. you may be wondering what type of content
in short videos is getting famous. Can u guess it? Ok, let me do it for you. There are
multiple genres in short videos
that will hit your brain and make it viral or at least likable content. like videos that show luxury, cringy content,
couple goals, quick motivation, videos about idols, and most important genre quick emotion,
emotions like sadness, fun, regret, etc Features like autoplay in the app will let
you scroll endlessly losing your control over the app. The interface plays a great role in it. Notice, how immersive the full-screen interface
of TikTok is, the creator recor
ds their video close to the camera. a simple psychological fact is used that most
of us pay more attention to faces than we do to anything else. That is so catchy. One after another app shows sticky and unexpected
content that will be discussed in the latter part of the video. We can’t get off this app because of what
psychologists call “random reinforcement”. Random reinforcement is the delivery of a
reward at irregular intervals. TikTok works like an addictive slot machine. Every time we see a
post we get a dopamine
hit. We want to feel that satisfaction again, so
we keep scrolling just like gamblers keep adding nickels into slot machines. Digging deeper
For better understating, I will explain one by one all the pillars upon which this short
video app stands. Short, surprising, endless, snappy
For explaining purposes, we will take TikTok as an example and will analyze it. before explaining the short nature of the
videos I want you to understand the concept of “information seeker” as
humans we tend
to get attracted by the lots of information regarding what is happening around the world
like what is happening in someone's life, news about celebrities, what is the next big
tech and on and on. But having said that our brain wants every
information shortly, that is why apps like google news, Flipboard, inshorts have seen
success in a short period. This information -seeking nature in less time
leads to short videos that is why TikTok becomes so attractive. timers are set in the a
pp for videos like
15 sec. and 30sec. app prefers users to make short videos. Surprising:-
we all love surprises who don't. Surprises hit the brain differently. hippocampus (part of your brain) which will
generate chemical that is responsible to raise curiosity in you. These little surprises by the apps will always
make you curious during the entire scrolling time. As explained earlier if this surprising thing
is mixed with random reinforcement then something next level will happen in your brain
. You are more into the app than ever before. These surprises after an irregular interval
of time will always make you curious till you are exhausted after watching hours of
short videos. We know how many hours TikTok takes from us. One by one videos are waiting in a queue to
be watched and those videos themselves are changing in a queue with what reactions it
is getting on the present video. Reactions can be whether you like or share
that video, how many times you have seen that video on a loop
, the algorithms that run behind
the app are quite intelligent, either you learn, laugh or get entertain but u always
get something personalized. app notices everything, literally everything
like what type of creators you follow, what types of things that creator does in his videos
like if that creator dance then more dancing videos will be shown to you. How much time you spend on different genres
of videos. Also, the song in videos plays a big role
once you like a video that has a particular so
ng in it then more and more new videos will
be shown to you with that same song making the app soo much sticky. This is how you just remember flicking your
thumb for the first time only and the rest is done by the app. And the urge of one more never ends. I don’t need to explain this. I mean how easy is it to use these apps. like
for TikTok you just need to open that app and rest you know, one by one you keep on
scrolling searching for that dopamine hit once you hit that you want more and if you
didn’t find it, you still keep on scrolling. which is a loop. problem that is going to have with humans
The Attention Economy since these apps plays big role in our short
attention span. People may have trouble focusing on tasks
for any length of time without being easily distracted. A short attention span can have several negative
effects, including: poor performance at work or school,
inability to complete task daily, missing important details or information, communication difficulties in rel
ationships And the thing becomes even more addictive
when all these get fed into AI that continuously monitors your all decision, which types of videos u are playing, for how
long, which video you played in a loop, which song video you like and things goes on and
on. WHY COMPANIES WANT IT TO BE ADDICTIVE ?
“Its all about attention” These problems speak to a larger issue that
is present with many large platforms using information and data as a commodity. The pressure for media companies to gain a
s
much engagement for as long as possible is what is known as the Attention Economy. With its user base and a possible valuation
of more than 100 billion dollars in 2021, TikTok is quite up there with a large platform. Everything revolves around one big thing ADVERTISEMENT. It may be through tv, youtube, Instagram,
and every other free app, an ad is the main revenue for the company
Your attention is scarce and is also desirable. Large platforms compete for attention as that
allows them to genera
te revenue through advertisements, the selling of data, goods, and services. This can be simply selling you a funny video
or a tangible commodity such as merchandise. In TikTok and other apps when you are fully
into the app, scrolling one by one then the company throws an ad in the middle of it making
it more relevant than ever. Advertisement is fuel to the TikTok like companies
and if they can show good engaging videos to the viewers, the rate of advertisement
in the app will increase resulting
in more money to be poured into the company making
more evaluation of the company. This is how everything works. Thanks, guys if you made it to the end. If you like the video please hit the like
button and if don’t dislike it. Comment down what are your thoughts regarding
apps like these, and what are your past or present experiences with these apps. I will be happy to know that
Catch you guys in the next one.
