seeing to find a cure for ALS today dozens of people went up to Mount Hood Meadows to fundraise more than $100,000 for ALS research and services here in the Northwest Fox 12's Drew Marine spoke with a Portland Public Schools teacher who was recently diagnosed with the disease it's been a journey Megan Kong's Journey with ALS began last August when she first got her diagnosis it's a disease that's really debilitating and it's a disease that takes away a lot of your function for a lot of your what
you do and I've been an active person my whole life so it's more of a mental and emotional game right now for me I haven't lost too much physicality but I'm going to and so it's just kind of planning for that and learning about what we can do and what we will need to do has been it's been hard not only is KH a mom of two young kids but she's a Portland Public Schools teacher too so she says it's hard to think about what the adjustment process is going to look like at home and at school once the
disease progresses eventually when I get to a point where I'm going to not be able to walk and have to need a wheelchair where I can get around still and trying to feasibly figure that out in a school classroom too but nonprofits like ALS Northwest are helping families like cons living with ALS by providing services and fundraising for research this year they held their annual ski ALS event at Mount Hood Meadows and raised more than $100,000 they say that money will go towards support programs
research projects and medical equipment programs sadly for most people from diagnosis to end of life is 2 to 5 years so this disease steals our loved ones before their time so it's crucial that we find new treatments to slow the disease and ultimately a cure right now KH says she's on three different treatments and in a clinical trial and she's not giving up I'm still young and again I still have I have kids I have a lot of my life that I'm looking forward to I'm willing to do pretty much anythi
